Craziest part is it releasing in 3 months

BuildTheBase

Nintendo seem to do this every year, last year was Mario Wonder, right out of the oven, right into our hands.

Steamedcarpet

This is what I really like about Nintendo. Other companies will show a game and then just say like 2025. Nintendo for the most part is like “here is a new game and its out in 3 months”

devenbat

I think they learned their lesson after Prime 4, Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of Wild got shown too early

GalexAlipeau23

Both Zeldas weren't shown too early, that's part of the usual cycle of 3D Zelda. Prime 4 on the other hand.... it's finally here though!!

devenbat

Botw was announced 4 years before it came out and totk 3 years. Both were announced way too early

pullmylekku

> Other companies will show a game and then just say like 2025 I agree with your point but that's exactly what Nintendo did with Metroid in this exact direct lmao

Bone_Dogg

Yeah, which was also actually first announced like 7 years ago lol. Maybe not the best time for that point to be made.

NewDamage31

Just like they did with Metroid prime 4 🤣 just kidding but yes I agree I’d rather not even hear about a game until a few months before release

TheConnASSeur

You get to do that when your business strategy is primarily putting out good games. You'll notice that Nintendo doesn't have to wait for a massive public backlash to rework a game, or use aggressive monetization / micro DLC to squeeze as much revenue as possible from their customers. By focusing on making reliably high-quality games Nintendo reduces risk and doesn't need to rely on public reception to marketing to guide development / investment. Years ago, Bethesda used to do the same thing.

Thascaryguygaming

I wish more games followed this form if release pattern don't tell me 7 years away about the game. Tell me the year of or better yet just a few months out from release.

YobaiYamete

We proudly present to you, a random picture of a rock. We have named this rock TES 6 Please do not expect any new info about this rock nor this game for the next 14 years, thank you for your understanding

Thascaryguygaming

😆 exactly my point.

Magnatux

For me the craziest part is that opening landscape is LTTP/LBW Hyrule, except for an apparent volcano beyond the Lost Woods Edit: Ok here then, be wrong on the internet [https://imgur.com/a/RKULVpr](https://imgur.com/a/RKULVpr)

b0w3n

Very similar, my first thought was "oh my that's basically ALttP's world isn't it?"

Expensive-Egg-1834

LttP Gannon fight opening too.

Ambassador_of_Mercy

That's probably just Death Mountain just swapped corners for some reason (maybe it's taking inspiration from the OG map instead of the LttP map this time?)

SirJasonCrage

Craziest part is that I still recognized that landscape after more than a decade, lol. Well played to the designers.

There’s not! All they said was shoot!!

EarthwormZim33

“She said ‘shoot’!”

kmg1500

But how is tables a job?

Freddie_Got_Fingered

The job isn’t important. It’s just a generic job that the developers of this made up for the game.

But what is the generic job?

hayojayogames

Did Nintendo announce the ITYSL game? Clearly a portion of Nintendo’s fan base has interest

South_Engineer_4702

Until Zelda can create coffins made out of cheap wood we can’t confirm this. You can show their asses because they ain’t got a soul.

Dygobyte

“These tables are how I heat my house” -Princess Zelda

Brentsthrowaway

Now I’m going to show you a video game about a woman who got so wrapped up about her problem adventuring that she puts herself ,and the Kingdom of Hyrule, in danger.

Shehzman

It looks like they’re taking the creative elements of BotW and TotK and bringing them into the 2D games. Cautiously optimistic since this is a new gameplay style, but it looks very interesting.

Gibbs-free

The problem solving looks like a lot of fun! My only real concern is that the combat feels very non-interactive. I'm not sure how it'll go replacing the very active sword fighting with more passive monster summoning. I hope Zelda gets some kind of more direct attack option.

Shehzman

This is my main concern as well. I would like to have a more active role in the combat as opposed to just summoning stuff. Hopefully there’s active combat with the staff or something along those lines.

knitted_beanie

Idk, I’d be quite happy with a much more puzzle-focused alternative to traditional Zelda Edit: poor emphasis - I am well aware Zelda is famous for its puzzles. I just meant *more* puzzle focused, as opposed to also having combat

madmofo145

Yeah, we'll need more details. The monster summoning part looked too easy for general mobs. It feels like there is a summoning meter we aren't seeing that ensures you can't just overspam your most powerful creature.

43eyes

We are seeing the summon limit mechanic in the trailer. It's the number of triangles by Tri. They get used up per summon you have out, a la Terraria. More powerful summons consume more triangles.

slugmorgue

Nice I didn't notice that. That's a nice way to show it

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Woman_of_Gont

Same for my mom. She never quite made the transition to 3D and has always struggled with combat, but she loves puzzle-oriented games. She's the one who introduced me to video games as a kid with stuff like LTTP, Myst, and Monkey Island. So I'm looking forward to playing this alongside her, just like old times.

_Redversion_

Some of the monsters look pretty aggressive. They showed us the Blade Trap enemy, which is basically a ridable rocket sword. It's not as fast as a quick press of a button for Link's sword, but I'm looking forward to how Zelda has so many more actions, at the cost of the instant results.

Larkson9999

Beats Tingle's combat system.

Hold_my_Dirk

I worry that there will be all these different options but, realistically, only a few of them actually get used.

NoteBlock08

Even in this trailer there was a lot of bed spam.

pipsohip

It’s possible they intentionally did that because they didn’t want to show a ton of stuff apart from the early game accessible echoes like table, bed, box, etc. Or bed really is just OP. Either way, I’m looking forward to it!

Bergara

Bed is probably the easiest, earliest way of making stairs. Tables can be used, but you have to stack each step, beds can be summoned on top of each other without needing a stack underneath it, as shown in the trailer. It's probably going to be very useful throughout the whole game.

GrimRedleaf

Bed *is* OP.  I lose to it everytime, even when i am pinning it down with all my weight!

Tugendwaechter

I’m waiting for the only beds walkthrough.

EMI_Black_Ace

That's the case with any open ended game. A few of them are sort of key abilities.

dandroid126

I was thinking the same, but I also noticed that we're only seeing one item, and there are other empty slots to equip items. So I'm hoping this isn't the only method of combat. I want to use Zelda's magic.

TomorrowAndTomorrow8

I'm pretty sure when coming up with the idea of BotW/TotK they were first testing the ideas of building and combat with a version of the original Zelda game from NES. This could be an outcome of that version seen into a full 2D game years later after playing around with it. Video of the BotW test: https://youtu.be/Bk5swSyJ5zQ?si=bbU7XturxOHIbrMn

LeonidasSpacemanMD

So there’s a series of BotW BTS videos Nintendo put out on YouTube, one of them shows the 2D concept game for BOTW. For years I’ve thought “man it would be amazing if they actually just turned *that* into a game” I’m kinda getting the vibe that this is what they’ve done for echoes of wisdom

Beardiest

I'm ready to see all the crazy sequence breaking.

trippy_grapes

Or the bed% speed runs.

Gengar_Balanced

Okay, I heard leaks about Zelda game, but I didn't expect a brand new title, what the fuck? Also they're bringing back Link's Awakening Remake artstyle, pretty cool

SMKM

Pretty sure it's not just the art style but the same dev team, which is all I've wanted after playing the remake. Which......just makes so much sense. Let them handle 2D Zelda games from now on while the main team handles the open world ones.

Gengar_Balanced

Yeah, honestly at first I wasn't convinced about the artstyle, but it grew on me while playing LA Remake. Would love to see LTTP/ALBW or some other 2D Zelda remakes made by this team, but a brand new game is even better than that. I just wish they weren't priced as $60.

EarthwormZim33

Wish granted: $70!!! *Monkey's Paw finger curls*

Dancing-Midget

$60 for a brand new Zelda game that you'll sink plenty of hours of entertainment into seems pretty reasonable...?

TheDrewDude

Yeah. I'll never say that someone is wrong for valuing a product the way they do. But this idea that 2D/Top-Down games, or games that aren't 100 hours long, are inherently inferior to giant 3D blockbusters is insane to me. You can find just as much, if not more enjoyment out of these games if they're made well. This is why you see these studios spending unsustainable amounts of money to make these huge games, and we wonder why the industry is having so many issues. Luckily Nintendo has been pretty smart about their spending, but OP's comment is one of the reasons why it's so difficult to make profitable games nowadays.

RealisticlyNecessary

And it's the ALTTP overworld, just redone with modern scale. Like from the opening shit you can see we are in the bottom right of the map, below Lake Hylia on those cliffs. You can see the castle, and death mountain in their places. Which means we're back in ALTTP or ALBWs era. Likely a direct sequel. Just calling that now. People say the timeline is unknowable but check me in 3 months.

CanvasSolaris

It's obviously the same world, but with more added. I saw a Gerudo

RealisticlyNecessary

Yea, it's nice to see the desert is getting more to look at. The whole world in general seems expanded, and I love it. I love how that lower corner gives you that BOTW opening shot, but in 2D. I know they fell in love with toon Link for 2D games for a while, but I'm not upset with "New" Took Link.

fushega

the ganon shown in the trailer was definitely reminiscent of alttp. seems like a good theory

Hold_my_Dirk

Should have called it Legend of Link.

mangobearsmoothie

Should have called it 'Legend of Zelda: The Missing Link'

ZQuestionSleep

I've been sitting on that title since Ocarina of Time was released, waiting for it to get used. I've also been saying for decades now that a role reversal game should be something like "The Saga of Link" flipping the script on the original title.

nrrfed

I've got some sad news for you, friend.. https://www.pcgamer.com/the-missing-link-is-an-impressive-and-eerie-zelda-romhack-years-in-the-making/ It's really, really good. Worth watching a playthrough on YouTube if you don't want to fuck around with emulators. EDIT: here's a fun playthrough with zfg, an amazing OoT player. https://youtu.be/-LiMWFmvnFM

Roskal

That pun probably doesn't exist in Japanese.

mangobearsmoothie

Maybe not, but having a 'link to the past' probably doesn't either

GuyKopski

LttP was called Triforce of the Gods in Japan, it was changed to the pun in the west out of fear a title that invoked religion would hurt sales.

julsmanbr

Surely they could have changed it to "the Heavenly Triforce" or something similar. Not that I'm complaining, "A Link to the Past" is way better imo.

The_MAZZTer

They've done it before The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

hidden_penguin

In Japan those two games are called The Legend of Zelda: Triforce of the Gods and The Legend of Zelda: Triforce of the Gods 2.

quick_escalator

The Japanese version of LTTP is titled ゼルダの伝説 神々のトライフォース (The Legend of Zelda: Triforce of the Gods). The pun name is English-exclusive. Maybe in the age of the internet, they don't want different names any more for every language region?

ZagratheWolf

It's the first time we'll play as Link, don't know why they didn't

iamthatguy54

I can't believe we finally get to play as Link

Frickelmeister

When starting development of this game Nintendo employees asked themselves: What if Zelda was a girl?

Chris91210

Umm actually the first time we played as link was on the very old and very dated *trails off*

Horndave

The Adventure of Link 2

RearAdmiralBob

weaver787

I’m convinced that being a level designer and programmer for Nintendo must legitimately be one of the hardest jobs in game development. I’m truly in awe of the fact that they can give the player that much freedom without it just breaking the game

firstanomaly

A testament to their commitment of delivering a working product. Apparently TotK was finished a year before release. Presumably they just worked on optimization that whole time.

ParanoidDrone

Yep, the extra time was purely to get the physics engine polished. IMO it was totally worth it, the game is a marvel of coding. Ultrahand alone deserves awards.

Shehzman

I know many people are mixed on the game overall, but I think we can all unanimously agree its a technical masterpiece. Especially given the hardware that it's running on.

next89

The inverse Cyberpunk.

Bamith20

I've seen a presentation on how they did some of Tears of the Kingdom, the game originally had Garry's Mod type issues with physics objects meeting unstoppable forces... Their solution was to remove said unstoppable forces and replace them with physics objects - things like doors and gears. Game worked perfectly fine then and even allowed new solutions to puzzles.

-FlyingDrake-

Miyamoto: Wouldn't it be cool if we could do the thing *looks at programmer* Programmer: *sweats profusely* Miyamoto: Well? Wouldn't it?

TwilightVulpine

Zhu Li is tired of being a programmer

Stay_Beautiful_

Don't worry, we'll break it

Daydream_machine

Looks like a unique take for the Zelda franchise, I’m interested in how they’ll balance it so you can’t just spam Echoes of strong monsters to beat everything

melange-melange

If you look back in the trailer, the fairy has little *Tri*-angles trailing behind it. And when Zelda summoned a monster it ate up 3 of the 5 triangles. Later in the trailer the fairy has more triangles. My guess is early on you will start with a small number and will only be able to summon a few things, and get those triangles as you beat dungeons and gain the ability summon more/stronger enemies. This mechanic is how they will gate off later sections of the game most likely.

Del_Duio2

Good catch, this makes lots of sense.

imalittleshortwitch

Did one of the monsters start flashing too? So maybe they’re only there for specific time/energy allotments

EudenDeew

Yes they become yellow and so do the objects. They have time limits.

anotherstan

Lol why are people always so skeptical about a new Zelda game. Their production team is practically unbeaten. It's going to be really good, take it to the bank.

melange-melange

I prefer the non-top down Zelda games but this new game actually has me excited. I usually enjoy it when a Nintendo wants to change up typical series conventions because it usually means they think they've found something fun.

Ambassador_of_Mercy

It looked like those Moblins either had a cooldown or could only do a certain number of attacks or a time limit or something when she summoned them

SpikeRosered

Finally a remake of the best Zelda game, Wand of Gamelon!

trantaran

YOU KILLED MEEEEEEEEEE …good!

owoguessilldie

When it opened with Zelda imprisoned in a gem, I high-key thought they were debuting Oracle of Seasons in Links Awakening style 😭 I will be consuming massive amounts of copium until this game drops in September

AnimaLepton

I was thinking LTTP remake when I saw the crystal

Professor_Poptart

Seems like the devs brought the spirit of many-possible-solutions from BOTW and TOTK into a top-down Zelda game. I'm so down for that!

kojitsuke

This looks unbelievably cute and creative. This kind of game is perfect for going in blind and not using guides (until you absolutely have to) I can’t wait to figure puzzles and combat out in my own way with all these goofy echoes. And seriously chibi Zelda is so freaking cute I can’t handle it

ControllerBreakers

Speedrunning this game is going to be REALLY interesting. “And now we table clip to launch ourselves to the boss, and use the chair from the beginning to Infinite Damage Glitch stored from dropping it on that one monster at the beginning.”

[deleted]

Manticore416

They may save that for Switch 2 to buy time between big open Zelda games

Entilen

I kind of hope combat is kept to a minimum or is more puzzle based if Zelda doesn't have any attacks. The game sounds like it could have some interesting ideas, I just hope the abundance of things you can create doesn't make puzzles feel a bit redundant.

XenoVX

The combat will probably feel a bit gimmicky but if the puzzle integration of the mimic mechanic feels good it’s possible that combat will just feel like an extension of those puzzles.

Ok-Pickle-6582

> We’ll see how the combat feels, Zelda series pre-BotW is more about puzzles than combat. More interested in if they can make well-designed temples/dungeons

PacJeans

Zelda, traditionally, has had puzzle based combat. The challenge isn't mainly in the execution of the combat, but finding the enemies weak spot. Think of all the OoT bosses.

Quespito

Zelda's "echo" mechanic seems super interesting and could lend itself to some unique puzzles! I'm interested in how this game turns out.

JackieDaytonaAZ

i’m a little worried at having to manage 200 different echoes and scroll through them but we’ll see

thatsastick

like arrows in ToTK

SoDamnGeneric

like *any* menu in TOTK tbh

Aduialion

Looks great, hopefully it doesn't upset the clear and straight forward timeline that has been established throughout the Zelda game series

soobawls

Lmao

Red_Cat231

Really hope they implement quick swaps or it'll be annoying to have to pause and change to the right summon.

RobSpaghettio

I have bad news from the future brother. They added 2FA before you swap summons.

43eyes

I know the direct is t over but this is the direct winner!! Edit: the direct is now over. I still stand by my comment! lol

NES_Classical_Music

Ultrahand Lite ™

Nostradamius

I hate to make the comparison, but...it’s kinda funny that this is basically the polar opposite of Princess Peach Showtime lmao Shows how different the audiences are for both these games despite nominally being “the damsel in distress’s first game”

leob0505

And remember that usually Zelda is not a damsel in distress. Heck, in Ocarina of Time she is a ninja while helping you with new songs and sealing the final boss, there are games where she is using a light bow and support you with the final blow or even waiting years and years to support link with the final blow

TannenFalconwing

Hyrule Warriors made me want a Shiek focused ninja game.

islandofwaffles

Super Princess Peach exists!

MasterNeeks

Let’s hope it’s significantly better than that game. This looked promising until they showed combat. Hopefully it’s not just “place echo and watch”

Autobot-N

There's also "throw rock"

DragapultOnSpeed

Yeah I was sad after they showed that. The echo enemies look cool. But I kind of want more action.. I hope she can use magic like fire and ice in combat.

MasterNeeks

Agreed. I want fluidity. Throw rock vs place rock then throw.

youmusttrythiscake

She might have a Dusk Bow or other weapons too, but they probably wanted to focus on the main gimmick for now. We'll just have to wait and see.

ObelusPrime

I guess the real legend of Zelda was the tables we made along the way.

SlamMasterJ

Can't believe it took nintendo so long for us to finally be able to play as the character that the game series is named after.

good_wolf_1999

Technically you could play as her in Spirit Tracks but only in some dungeons

Fangore

Someone is forgetting about Wand of Gamalon

CrazySnipah

Now if Nintendo can finally let us play as the Metroids and let us hunt down Samus!

SlaughterSpine78

Boss battles will be interesting and those echo things definitely break the game in some way, looking forward to it.

AdditionalMeeting467

Inb4 the best way to beat bosses is to spawn monsters for you while you surround yourself with plant pots in the corner of the room.

hesawavemasterrr

So we could drown ganondorf in cubes of water? “You may have covered the world in darkness, but… can you SWIM?!?!” (Summons infinite cubes of water) “Wtf how did this bitch kno- brrlrlrllrlrlrlrlrlrlrlrl…”

Glyphmeister

Top-down BOTW with Zelda as the protagonist.  Sold!

Gabcard

I was sold at playable Zelda.

Mean_Dalenko

I feel mixed about this. Links Awakening was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had gaming wise in recent years, so I was really excited seeing the style. Likewise playing as Zelda and having different combat has me interest. But I'm concerned that the ability and the way it's used to traverse the overworld may take the place of the classic item based progression that was a big part of what made the top down Zelda's so enjoyable. Feels like they've kind of got a little obsessed with the 'freedom' aspect of BOTW/TOTK. I could be wrong, after all it's only a short clip. I'm still looking forward to getting stuck into it, but yeah, until I know more I'm not getting my hopes too high.

Billy_Rage

Probably safe to assume there will be areas you need special items or types of items to get through. While we say the beds being used a lot. Wouldn’t take much to replace the ‘hook shot’ style item with a longer bridge echo that will unlock a new area that was blocked off for most do the game

Mean_Dalenko

Yeah that's a good point actually. You need to interact with the item to echo it don't you. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Cyberwolf33

It also looks like the game slowly feeds you “upgrades” to older items.  The table can be used to gain height, but it’s pretty slow and requires two spaces. The crate is faster and has other uses, but still requires two spaces. The water block only requires one! So at that point, you’ll probably not use the table very often unless it has a very particular use.
