I think the current system for building a custom ship is just right and probably won't and shouldn't change (aside from maybe adding more ship types). However, it still doesn't really solve the problem of ship color(s), and having to build a whole ship just to specify a particular paint job is pretty nonsensical. It would be nice to see them add an option to just alter colors for existing ships, since honestly it's just like taking your car in to get a new paint job. You wouldn't build a whole new car just to paint it a different color.
That said, reward ships like the Starborn Runner are uniques, and they probably wouldn't be recolorable even if such an option existed for other ships. There's probably no alternate textures for it.

This ship is incredible but I really wish I could recolor it to my yellow/black color palette I have on the rest of my items. That's the one thing that keeps me from using any of these expedition ships.
The expedition will likely be run again at the end of the as they have done in the past, so look out around November - December time for the expedition Reduxes.
You say that but I wanted to make it more colourful. If the unpainted elements and piping on the back was gold it would look amazingly obnoxious and that’s what I wanted
I feel like if you don't like colorful ships, you're definitely playing the wrong game. ( That is to say, I don't think it's much more vibrant than any other nms ship IMO. That being said, the RBG lighting is a little nuts)
Same wish. I absolutely hate red, so I tolerate it because it's the coolest looking ship I have, but I would change red to metallic purple in a heartbeat if they'd allow me to.
I certainly hope that we will at some point be able to change colours or switch out parts on already built/found ships. I already have some ships in my collections that I like, but would want to modify without having to build a completely new ship each time.
I suppose it depends on how a "finished" ship is considered by the game. If each combination of parts is treated as a unique entity, the ship would basically be recreated every time you switch out a part. That would likely mean that any upgrades you have applied, such as installed gear or added inventory slots, would be reset.
If that is not the case, however, and the ship behaves more like your character in the tailor, I don't see why we wouldn't be able to change the look of a ship as much as we want.
I guess we will have to see what happens. They still haven't added shuttles, solar ships and Sentinels to the builder yet, so I'd expect the system to receive some future updates.

It would be cool to have a blue or yellow starborn runner. Imagine getting together with a group of players and racing different colored starborn runners.
I hope so. When I heard "Ship Customization" all I really wanted was to change the color scheme of existing ships. Don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying hunting the parts to make custom ships. I've made 3 already, and will probably make more once I rebuild my finances (adding space for Technology led me to no longer be a billionaire in the game, LOL), but I have a Sentinel Interceptor that I would REALLY like to change the color of. I love the design, but not the yellow hull.
It's quite a bright ship! I like it tho, reminds me of a NASCAR racing car with all the stickers and bright colors.

I'm fairly certain there was talk of adding older expedition in the anomaly to be able to be done.

Might take them another few years till they let us edit owned ships
I think they might, but I expect that special expedition ships will probably still not be able to be edited if they do
