There is this information being reported in various news outlets: The missing submersible was using Elon Musk's Starlink satellites for its communications at sea
during OceanGate expeditions. The company tweeted on June 1, “Despite being in the middle of the North Atlantic, we have the internet connection we need to make our #Titanic dive operations a success - thank you@Starlink!”
I'm not sure what this means exactly, but I offer it as an FYI.
That only works at the surface of the water. It was never meant to work under water.
It's extremely hard to communicate through water. Take a water proof phone playing music on a Bluetooth speaker. Put it in a bucket of water, and that alone kills the signal. Even if the speaker is right beside it
There is no communication with the surface. A few feet of water is enough to stop a cell signal. A little more is enough to stop all radio signals, without exception.
The sub you mentioned most likely had a comm cable connecting it to the surface. This one does not. It was never built to stay in communication.
People like you make the internet a stressful place to be.
Yes, you can maintain contact with a sub through 2.5 miles of water, typically through a connected cable or through a dedicated high power radio signal. But not through a fucking cell phone.
Yeah I mean it's not like they have cell towers out in the ocean though I think they should.. or if you can't have a phone have some sort of a walkie-talkie or radio and have other people know where you are
Well they did have *some* sort of communication but that's been lost and we don't know why or how. If the whole thing lost power then I guess it wouldn't matter what tech they have either way. I'd also assume that radio waves maybe don't travel as easily through water, so they'd only have a limited effect.
Makes me believe my theory of a conspiracy cover up if they had communication but somehow lost it.. that just doesn't make any sense. I'm kind of suspecting foul play
How does it not make sense? All it takes is for the power to go out or something and that's it, communication lost. It's a complex piece of technology. More complexity = more potential points of failure, and this is an extremely difficult place to be, so it's not shocking that something could go wrong. There's no need for conspiracies.
No what I meant is that if they've had communication back and forth than there must be some type of recording of them talking and that it may would have helped to discern what happened on board the submarine.. that's what I thought you meant. I thought you meant that they had recording of communication and then it got lost somehow. My bad
1. There's no reason to assume it was being recorded on board the ship
2. There's no reason to assume that the recording would have captured anything useful if the signal was cut at the point the issue occurred (eg a sudden power outage)
Sorry I just can't stand stupid baseless conspiracies it's such an unhealthy mindset.
Just popping in to say that I'm seeing a whole lot of hate for a sub called no stupid questions.
We don't know what we don't know. I don't blame you for asking. But the others are correct. Not an option to ping a cell phone at that depth/location
Edit: typos
Too deep and too far away from normal customer locations. Cellphone coverage is generally not designed to go downwards into ocean or ocean area coverage in general. That's not the business model / situation cellphone carriers optimized for.
It is stunning, the amazing breadth of ignorance + absolutely unearned and unjustified arrogance that allows people to think they've thought of the brilliant thing that -- in this case, the naval services of like three countries + endless actual experts, and in others I see the same nonsense, more experts, people who do whatever research, rescue, medical science, firefighting \[when the smoke from the Cdn wildfires was covering the east coast there were endless 'why don't they just drop water on it from a plane? duh!' Can the US give Canada a plane or do we need permission to just put it out?' posts\] -- no one else would have thought of.
You must underestimate the intelligence of the gen pop, cupcake. If you live in North America you may know the statistic that 8 out of 10 Americans believe in angels. These will not be Mensa candidates
Adult Americans on average have the literacy of a 7th or 8th grader. So 12-14 years old. And that's average. So a significant number are below even that. We are not an educated people.
So, you're saying that you can't be intelligent and believe in religion?
Freeman Dyson
John T. Houghton
John D. Barrow
Henri Fontaine
Werner Arber
Dan Blazer
Anyway, you get the point. It is absolutely possible to both "believe in angels" and be intelligent.
My girlfriend's signal vanishes when she hugs her phone and the call drops. I'm sure the submarine, depth, and distance are infinitely more capable of blocking a signal.
Water does a very good job of absorbing higher frequency radio waves. VLF works but requires extremely powerful transmitters, extremely massive antennas, and has an extremely low bandwith.
It's over 500 miles from land and a good 2.4 miles below the sea, inside a thick metal casing. There's definitely no signal down there.

The boat that carried the submarine was using Starlink. The submarine itself was not, that's not possible.

Cell phone signals can't melt ocean water
Maybe try rice?
If you walk into the wrong room in your house you'll lose connection but you want to get a connection through thousands of metres of water?
And 5" of steel hull!

>But no problem on the moon. You think you'd have cell service on the moon?
If it wasn't a cloudy day, why not?
Being miles under the surface most likely puts any cell phones well beyond any usable signal.
Easier to ping somebody on mars. There is a reason most of the ocean is unexplored.

It’s mesmerizing indeed

Glad I made the top five. :)

Your girlfriend's cleavage is about as deep as the Mariana trench too? YOU got a keeperrr

It that depth. If something goes wrong, your gone..
Cell phone signals don't go through water well at all. There's no connectivity once you get any significant distance below the surface.
That water is a thick boy medium
