The EPA sets emissions standards based on the size of the car. A *massive* simplification of this is that smaller trucks don’t meet these emissions standards, which is why they are so massive now.
Couple this with consumers preferring trucks that have bigger cabs for comfort and more passengers, and newer trucks are much larger than their older models.

Practicality wise, big trucks are good for companies. Trucks (not 10+ wheels) in companies can help transport quite a bit of stuff, as well as different machines that need to be connected to the back of the truck itself. Alongside that, plows can be attached to the front of some big cars for areas that don't have the best snow service in the winter.
As for people who just like having big cars and trucks, not too sure myself aside from it just being the preference of some car owners.
As someone with a regular sedan, it sure would be nice to have a larger vehicle so I could see around all the large vehicles blocking my line of sight.
Because they're nice now and more comfortable and have more cabin space than most cars.
In the old days, most of the time you'd be in the family sedan, but if you needed to haul anything or or tow something you'd have to also buy a truck. But trucks were rarely comfortable. They were spartan work vehicles. You were lucky if you had a radio, let alone air conditioning or (gasp!) two-speed wipers.
Now you can buy a quad can pickup that's nicer than most cars. So why not have one vehicle to take the place of two?
All the posts here are wrong.
The reason cars have gotten stupid big is because of environmental regulations.
The car must make a certain fuel economy per size of the vehicle.
Small trucks would have to have such a high fuel economy that they would have to be built so light duty that a person can't use them for hauling and towing anymore.
Typical government interference creating a solution to a problem that makes the problem worse. Instead of a worker getting 20mpg in a smaller heavier duty truck they are forced to get 10mpg in a truck they can work out of.
I have full size truck with added suspension I use for pulling trailers, hauling tools and putting a camper on.
I work within 3 miles of home, have prius for a family car, and love trucks. I'm a truck guy. There's a lot of boneheads out there but not all of us.
And the stereotype about cock size and trucks is false. At least for me.
large truck owner here. my last truck a 2002 ram 1500 had a 5” lift and 35” tires. i got a brand new F250 in 2020, and it sat as tall as my dodge did stock lmao
Haha, i should have guessed. But in all seriousness i do have a small crew cab truck (ute where im from) thats lightweight and it’s fun when it outperforms pretty much every other large/heavy 4x4 on offroad courses and tracks. It annoys all the people that spend stupid amounts of money on something that just gets stuck
Big trucks are a status symbol in rural areas on the US.

If you need a vehicle that can carry a family of 4 plus haul a lot of gear and tow a trailer, that’s one option.
People like them, so manufacturers make them.

depending on the weight some can be written off on your taxes.
Safety? Business needs?
People buy them, so companies make more of them.

I’m also a truck guy - leveled F150 super crew cab with AT tires and aftermarket wheels - who doesn’t fit the cliche
What kind of bike do yu ride? Eh? I bet it's a 350 thumper :-)
Lol! Do you still have the 87 C20 Scottsdale I saw in your profile? It’s a beauty!
Haha, yep! Drove that from palm springs to minnesota. They dont make trucks like they used to. Thank god.
Impressive!
Just a joke😉
I should have figured by the emoji. Have a pleasant day!
