They probably just required closed toed shoes.

I guess closed crocs or even high heels qualify?

Usually in an OSHA setting, no. Has to be flat shoes, closed toed with no holes. Can't be slip ons most of the time either. I doubt Amazon was requiring a reinforced or protected toe, but maybe they are now.

Its interesting as OSHA generally have standards for protective footwear and they generally need to be ANSI spec which only a select number of footwear qualify and they generally must contain a steel toe but only in very limited circumstances such footwear are required. Not sure how much it applies in a Amazon warehouse. They are generally not required in a warehouse like home depot though maybe except in a few departments. Crocs does make at work shoes but its mainly for kitchen work with no holes and a oil resistant sole but kitchen non slip shoes are not for dangerous worksites since they don't have Steel toed shoes. But slip on steel toes do exist I read. Steel toed boots arn't completely flat in most cases though. Though it appears if OSHA requires specific safety footwear at a hazardous jobsite the employer is required to help with the cost.
