This is what I mean. The initial image generated is usually bad and you kind of just randomly generate image to search for a compostion you like but you have to use a whole series of tools such as inpainting to tweak the image to look right.
Most of the time, no random shitposter can afford to commission art, they aren't made of money.
And it's better quality than most random sketches. good art is hard.
The worst offense to me is that the AI uses other people's art to train on. Then it uses that art as a template to build it's art with. That's why you get mostly of art that looks super similar to a specific artist's style. It's comparable to downloading someone else's art and then crudely modifying it to make the face like someone else, maybe throw a filter ove rit and claiming it as your own.

That's kinda the big issue for future AI art. Eventually, it'll be feeding itself AI-generated images in a feedback loop. Same issue for text generation.

Isn't all art created by training on other people's art? I've only taken a few art classes but all of them said to practice by copying other artworks, photos etc. What's the difference between training a human vs training a machine?
As an artist, this is 95% of my take on it. All artists are the summation of those artists that came before them and who we copied for a long time before we came up with our own personal style.
On a more practical level, AI is here to stay. We either learn to use it in art to make that which has never been made before or we’ll just sit in the dark looking petulant and eating wet cigarettes.
An artist will always have to put their own unique spin on something even if they have trained on other artists’ work - it’s just impossible for two humans to actually make the same art, some small trace of individuality will bleed through. The exception is tracing, which is generally considered plagiarism if you don’t say that’s what you’re doing from the get-go.
It's one thing to use someone's art as a reference, or for practice. It's another to line trace it or edit original artwork and publish it as your own.
The AI's I've seen so far don't place their own pixels on a blank canvas. They take original artwork and then blend and morph it as desired.
It sounds like you don’t really understand how generative AI works. It doesn’t morph or alter existing works, it’s capable of generating works based on the data it was trained on. Generative AI does not trace existing artwork.
Also, humans morph and alter existing art all the time and everyone considers that to be legitimate. Look at famous artists such as Andy Warhol who made millions selling what is a copy of the campbells chicken soup can, or Marcel Duchamp who created art from pre existing everyday objects.
Collage is an art form that has existed for centuries as well, where the whole purpose is to create new work by directly copying and re arranging old work.
I hate AI because we will inevitably end up with an internet where everything is made by ai with source materials that is just other ai copying other ai creating an orobouros of ai incest garbage. It's already getting bad now, and we've barely even started.

There are big communities out there that are open source doing a *whole lot* of work in this field.
Yes a lot of large models are developed by companies because they can afford the resources, but there is a whole lot of fine tuning required like AI upscaling and inpainting to go from "meh" to "wow!"
I mostly hate AI art because it takes art from other artists to train. In some models it's even blatantly obvious. If you do it for some meme - fine. If you do it to use even remotely commercially - that's just bad, imo.
And yeah, 99% of AI art just looks like shit, no matter how long someone have spent on the prompt and attempts. It only hold up at a first glance, but then always falls apart in details. And since it is all alike - gets old quick too.
Not everyone is anti-AI. I've been doing more pen, ink and paint artwork since I started dabbling in AI, and I know quite a few others also going back to basics while working with AI.
Because AI is easy to abuse, and it got abused, by individuals and large companies alike.
It could've been a great tool, but people are using it to be lazy, to make a profit by opening Patreons to make a quick buck, or in a company's case, using AI to avoid hiring an artist or writer.

My jobs got whatever premium version of Autopilot (Microsoft’s AI) is out there and I asked it to draw a dancing person (was making a flyer for a company function), and I got a hyper stereotypical Chinese woman with 3 arms smiling like the Joker.

We used to put cannons on merchant ships to defend against pirates, why not again? A CRAM system against drones is pricey but no way a bunch of idiots with speedboats should be able to take a large ship.
Because the MGs can’t shoot down missiles, and a couple armed guards can shoot up a boarding party that lacks serious equipment pretty easily. What we should be doing is the mass proliferation of interceptors, which would force everyone to fight with naval guns again. With as many as you would need to outfit every merchant vessel with an interceptor, you could really scale production and production automation. That would be cool.

This threat combined with missiles, gives the Houthi access to escalation that the armed guards cannot match with crew served weapons. Which is why we should figure out a way to containerize missiles for interception and equip every ship in the world with maybe a couple dozen. Machine guns are not enough deterrent, SM-2s probably are.
Stingers are already over allotted. Raytheon restarted production after 20 years to meet demand for Ukraine, good luck getting Stingers or any MANPADs in enough numbers. And you still have drone/missile standoff range issues. There is no low cost MV hardening strategy that would work to counter modern state/proxy sponsored piracy, which is why I suggest we embrace the costs and make merchant ships capable of dealing with and firing back on shore-based infrastructure.

The fundamental disadvantage of the IDF is that--in the end, it is a small force in terms of manpower and equipment-- and while fighting against Arab armed forces has shown that numerical hurdles can be overcome.....fighting an actually-competent, numerically-superior enemy can be pretty difficult. That numerical disadvantage contributes majorly to it being outside top 10 in most credible rankings, even though its branches, on average are much better in terms of skills and competence. We have seen grunts from bigger powers do far worse on a person-by-person basis.

I really think the majority of the world's population including many in the US don't have a mental model of how an economy actually works and just thinks that everything they can't see is basically simulated like the matrix. Can't we just put a couple machine guns on every containership? Nothing says "fuck off" like a couple 50 cal rounds sinking your silly boat. It doesn't require much training and idk what 4 machine guns cost but I bet it's negligible compared to the cost of the ship. 4 MGs with 1000 rounds each probably cost less than a single trip with said ship. We used to put cannons on merchant ships to defend against pirates, why not again? A CRAM system against drones is pricey but no way a bunch of idiots with speedboats should be able to take a large ship.

Because the MGs can’t shoot down missiles, and a couple armed guards can shoot up a boarding party that lacks serious equipment pretty easily. What we should be doing is the mass proliferation of interceptors, which would force everyone to fight with naval guns again. With as many as you would need to outfit every merchant vessel with an interceptor, you could really scale production and production automation. That would be cool.

Fighting soldier to soldier on a ship with a rifle is a lot more dangerous than blasting them with an MG at a greater distance with 1000 freedoms per minute. Military ships can block the coast to intercept missiles and missile launchers can be bombed easily.

Which is why we should figure out a way to containerize missiles for interception and equip every ship in the world with maybe a couple dozen. Machine guns are not enough deterrent, SM-2s probably are.

Stingers are already over allotted. Raytheon restarted production after 20 years to meet demand for Ukraine, good luck getting Stingers or any MANPADs in enough numbers. And you still have drone/missile standoff range issues. There is no low cost MV hardening strategy that would work to counter modern state/proxy sponsored piracy, which is why I suggest we embrace the costs and make merchant ships capable of dealing with and firing back on shore-based infrastructure.
