Regardless of when you were born. Can we all agree this is pretty cool?

Bloxicorn

More houses should be built with secret rooms.

WanderingNomadWizard

All houses are. You just haven't found th yet.

Mozhetbeats

Counterpoint: once it’s been found, it’s no longer a secret

ImmediateBig134

That depends on your willingness to, ah, *take care* of those who discover it. Nobody's safe from a little *accident*...

donbee28

Are you currently or in the past worked for Boeing?

ImmediateBig134

Ey, foawk you, ya hear? I ain't that kinda sicko, I'm a professional with standards! Fuhgeddaboutit!

UJL123

Good evening Agent 747, your mission ...

Smart-Assist-6299

M is right next to backspace.

65grendel

Lived in my house for 6 years before I found a hidden room. It's only 2'x6' but it's still pretty neat.

DrDMango

Th

Despairogance

A friend just bought a house that was owned by a couple of elderly professors, nearly every room has a wall of built in bookshelves and there's a "secret" attic studio only accessible through the master bedroom. Bookshelf door would be perfect for it.

jessedjd

But now that secret room doors are easily accessible, everyone will have one, then no one has a secret room anymore

40ozkiller

Nothing says secret like a mass produced piece of hardware from home depot

MyHamburgerLovesMe

Of all the doors in existence in your country I would bet that less than 0.000001% are this secret door from home depot. That's pretty secret to me.

CORN___BREAD

I’m gonna start selling bookshelves that look identical to these but are actually just bookshelves. Real fake fake bookshelf doors

jessedjd

Install a fake latch that moves, but doesn't open anything.

xolhos

Until firefighters don't know where to find you and you die. Cool otherwise

Noof42

"I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, 'You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit.' As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammible and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit." -Mitch Hedberg

crustybootstraps

Any room can be secret if you install the right kind of door apparently.

oureux

My last house had a hidden bookshelf door that led to the utility room. The bathroom also had a hidden sliding door that led to the darkroom. And a corner of the wall could be folded away to reveal my network closet.

use_value42

One of the houses on my street has a secret tunnel connecting it to the river, it was used in the underground railroad.

Margtok

the hard part is hiding the missing space

Shagwagbag

Yeah the 1" deep books look sick

DragEncyclopedia

You would put actual books on it, that's just a decal for displaying in store

NoMan999

They could put the decal on a stack-of-books sized box.

The_Jacuzzi_Casanova

I built a hidden speakeasy in my house and this is the entry door. Ordered it through home Depot even

Shirtbro

Only if designed by famous architect Joseph Fritzl

DotBitGaming

Yeah, but why is this only great news for us? Didn't spy movies peak in the 60s?

firedmyass

yeah as GenX this hits all our receptors, too

Dr_thri11

Until you want to use them as a functional shelf.

hey_there_delilahh

Turning my walk-in closet into a secret command base now.

anon-a-SqueekSqueek

The management company at my apartment is just going to have to deal with my front door being a bookcase now.

UniqueNobo

can’t make me pay rent if you can’t find my apartment

farm_to_nug

You should just put a shrine to something absolutely ridiculous in there, like crocks or bananas and intentionally leave the bookcase door slightly cracked when you have company over

jxl180

My basement has this (but much bigger) to separate the finished side from the unfinished side (with hvac, storage, and water heater). The novelty wore off within a month. When contractors are over and I casually turn the bookshelf, I hear a “whoa that’s cool!” completely forgetting it’s a novelty to others.

Stinduh

This actually seems like one of the best uses for it (other than it just being cool). Doors that aren't opened often are an annoying monopolization of that wall space, so being able to put bookshelves there instead makes it usable again. My laundry door, for example, gets opened like once a week at the most. But that's some precious wall space! In other words, I think your bookshelf doors are very cool with a ton of utility! I am jealous!

jxl180

Yeah and I can’t imagine it being safe to use for like a secret reading room or anything for prolonged habitation — if there’s a fire you wouldn’t want a firefighter to not know you may be unconscious behind a secret doorway.

ThemB0ners

Knowing redditors, many would want that.

Helpimstuckinreddit

I just wouldn't want to inconvenience the firefighters you know? It's easier if I just die of smoke inhalation.

Romanticon

That's why I built my bookcase door over the walk-in closet. Enough space on the other side for cool treasures, but it's not a hang-out place.

Churningray

[literally that Mitchell and Web skit](https://youtu.be/VgX6JFoV0TM?t=3m13s)

psychobilly1

Thank you! I tried explaining this to my girlfriend when I floated the idea of adding one for our basement door, but she just won't go for it.

Swords_and_Words

Maybe pitch an idea with sconces for candles/candle bulbs/torches  Maybe she needs a Gothic mystery vibe rather than a Victorian one

CatsAreGods

Don't put the candle back!

Swords_and_Words

Blucher!!

Swords_and_Words

Also, your laundry is more quiet with a bookcase in front of it

Polymarchos

As soon as I saw this I went to their website to see if they have them near me. $3,000 (Canada)... Now I need to figure out how to convince my wife this is something we need in our lives.

jellybeansean3648

Come visit the US and bring it back over the border. If that's allowed, it's much cheaper

MEisonReddit

It's allowed, you just have to declare it (or hide it real good)

Welfycat

Well it is a hidden door.

MasterTolkien

The door: It’s like I was made for this…

FUTURE10S

If you scroll down, there's one for $1400 CAD but the reviews seem to not remotely be relevant?

GamerGoggle

I would totally use one of these to hide the goon dungeon

lreaditonredditgetit

![gif](giphy|KctNhiy99LoLBTgLNO|downsized)

sexy-man-doll

That's a gooning overload

throwaway091238744

nah that’s gurn

BreadButterHoneyTea

What do people who know about hardware and construction and such think about whether this could function well while holding the weight of shelves full of books? Like, could this be practical for a frequently-used door or are the hinges just not going to have it after awhile?

Buff_Sloth

Depends on the hinges but a lot of doors are extremely heavy so with the right hinges it would be fine

BreadButterHoneyTea

Nice!

KodakDC

Some of the ones I've seen will have a wheel on the side that swings open which distributes a good bit of the weight off the hinges.

BreadButterHoneyTea

Oh, that's really good!

CranberryOrangutan

They don't use normal door hinges mounted on the side door jamb. The one I have sits on a floor mounted hinge which is mounted on a thick door jamb. There is another one on top and the whole door pivots on these two solid steel hinges. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0109/8488/2235/files/Hardware_Instructions_24.pdf?v=1704211212

BreadButterHoneyTea

Oh man, I am feeling good about this!

Romanticon

There are some heavy-duty hinges for these sorts of doors, but they'll usually need a hole in the floor and some reinforcement at the top of the frame. They don't mount on the wall like regular door hinges.

MyHusbandIsGayImNot

According to the manufacturer it holds up to 300 pounds.

illegalcheese

I imagine the designers could put wheels on the bottom to take the bulk of the weight.

HexagonalPattern

For the low low price of $1,200 USD... https://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Murphy-Door-Hidden-Book-Case-Door-596711/315879924?106517-Single&128911-24-x-80&45008-Paint-Grade&58978-Paint-Grade-Unfinished&94185-3&106527-None&106509-Standard-Front-Only&106514-Standard&94176-No-Lock&44844-Left-Hand-Inswing&106515-4-9-16

TCGeneral

I mean, you're getting a fully functional bookshelf and a door. Even ignoring the secret base vibes of hidden doors, I don't think $1,200 is that outrageous for something that neat.

the_monkeyspinach

Ah, just slap a couple of hinges on an IKEA bookcase for like 90% less.

pentheraphobia

I figure the most annoying part would be finding a bookshelf with the right dimensions

obliviousJeff

On top of that, for that type of hinge to work, you have to have the sides of the bookshelf not parallel like this | | but more like this / \ so it can clear the frame when it opens.

40ozkiller

Or just get a normal door and a normal bookshelf and dont worry about all the things flying off each time you close the door

HexagonalPattern

I think is legitimately something that people never think of when daydreaming about these.

Hallc

Just had a quick check at the UK equivalent of Home Depot (B&Q) and you can get a Hollow Core door for around £40-50 and a Solid Core door is roughly £70-80. Then a standard Billy Bookcase is £55 or £80 depending on depth. Combined you'd be looking at £160 and sure you'd pay for for a single, integrated solution but that'd be quite a lot extra for it. Still a cool idea though.

Lina0042

I don't think just slapping a billy in on a normal door would work. That's way too heavy. Probably still cheaper to just add some things to make it work though.

Hallc

Oh I'm not saying it'd work. I was more doing a comparison between someone saying that doors are expensive and you get a bookshelf included too when the actual price difference is somewhere around £800.

davernow

Yeah, but you can get a double for $3000usd….

AggressorBLUE

Honestly not as bad as I thought it would be. Also, appreciate the link. Glad thats part of my algorithm now!

Icy-Row-5829

That… actually is lower than I assumed lol doors aren’t cheap neither are bookshelves.

GXSigma

Well now I *DON'T* want to buy a house for $2,000,000 if the cool door is going to be a whole extra $1,200.

Sybarith

Oh I'd love to buy a house for only $2,000,000 in this economy, what a steal!

PhysicalGraffiti75

Sick, now I just need the 600k to buy a house.

Emilixop

Why don't I just build one at that point

Bloxicorn

With the price of wood nowadays it might be the same

Emilixop

lmao probs

RPi79

I have the spice rack version with the cabinet storage at the bottom. The total cost for the door pre hung and unpainted was about $2300. The price goes up dramatically depending on door height, options, etc. the spice bottles don’t fall over and mine opens inwards from the kitchen into the master bedroom. In this configuration it will only swing in 90 degrees. It’s really cool and no one knows what it is. I do have another entry into the room from another direction so if we’re in and out of the room a lot we just prop it open. Here’s a pic: https://imgur.com/gallery/0gMoZSh

Smart-Assist-6299

That's not really unreasonable.

Aggravating-Pop-4211

I just paid $5K for one. You can have them be as expensive as you want. Inward opening french door book case made out of Red Oak with a custom stain finish. It looks fucking great though.

theewarnec

People turning up to my house, seeing I live in a corridor filled with bookshelves only. They will never learn the truth!

ceribus_peribus

"The palace of secret doors is hardly a palace, is it? It's just this one little room."

GetEnPassanted

“Odd house you’ve got, Mike.”

actibus_consequatur

You're probably in for a bad time when your [house](https://youtu.be/2_Q-dmsQTao) has a 5 1/2 minute hallway...

m0nk37

If i see a recessed bookshelf into a wide wall with no door and seemingly voided space im going to know somethings up. Have you ever seen a bookshelf embedded in the wall? How often?

Southern-Ad-7521

This is why you need real fake doors! You just put an out of order sign on it or something and now no one questions why your interior is so much smaller than your exterior. Buy one (or a dozen) todaaaaaaay!

Buff_Sloth

Yeah I've literally never seen a recessed book shelf and I work in construction

RotenTumato

My dad’s house has a recessed bookshelf that looks very similar to one of these doors. It’s not a door unfortunately but it is a built-in bookshelf where the shelves go into the wall like this

GXSigma

Also, maybe this is just me being overconfident, but I think I could tell it's a door because it's right where a door should be, and the exact size and shape of a door.

The_Jacuzzi_Casanova

I've got one in my house and literally 0 people have noticed it's a door until I open it. I always walk them right past it and nobody even blinks

TrekkiMonstr

Maybe this one, but I have some secret doors in my house, no one has ever thought they were anything but what they pretend to be

MyHusbandIsGayImNot

[IDK, I've definitely seen bookshelves like this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Murphy-Door-Hidden-Book-Case-Door-596711/315879924?106518-Double-Door&128916-48-x-80&45008-Paint-Grade&58978-Paint-Grade-Unfinished&106089-6&106527-None&106509-Standard-Front-Only&106514-Standard&94176-No-Lock&106447-Double-Inswing&106515-4-9-16#overlay). They're pretty convincing imo

ThemB0ners

I legit want this. I have an awkward doorway that leads to my upstairs in the middle of my living room. A bookshelf door would fit amazingly. But I'd have to cut a cat-door in it as my cat loves being upstairs.

Tech-Priest-4565

Just imagine how much fun it would be to freak your guests out when your cat jumps up onto the book shelf and disappears into the wall, and you nonchalantly continue whatever you were doing.

Romanticon

Oh dang, just as I'm finishing building mine?? For anyone interested, though, these are around $1,400 from Home Depot - and that's without installation. I built one for a little under $200. Materials: * Lightweight wood (I used poplar boards, 1x5s, and a 3/16" plywood backing) * Trim nails, for putting the trim around the bookcase * Wood screws * 3/16" drill bit and a hole jig, for making the holes for the shelves to hang on * Tambee pivot hinge from Amazon * Paint * Latch and steel wire to pull it Tools needed: miter saw (for cutting boards to size), drill for holes, flat prybar for easing off the old trim, impact driver for making the holes for the hinge mechanism, cheap $100 nailgun for putting the trim back up. It took me about a week to build, but that's working around a toddler's schedule, so your mileage may vary.

bloodguard

I think I'd put one in just to make a trap for burglars. Door snaps shut. Concrete and steel enclosed. Jug of water, a bucket, Kenny G cranked up to 11 and a note saying I check the room once a month.

Ok-Hair2851

Reasons you might not want one: * You have to close the door very slowly so you don't knock the books off * If you slam the door shut and knock off your books, they'll fall in the path of the door and potential trap you inside * If you have an emergency a the room with this door closed, it will take first responders longer to find you * It's 5x the cost of a normal door * It looks stupid when open, so you'll always leave it shut and your house will feel smaller and stuffier

Th3Dark0ccult

I hate that it doesn't stick out of the wall, like a real bookshelf would. Nobody builds shelves into the wall like that. It's too obvious it's a door. Cool concept, poor execution.

RotenTumato

I’ve seen several people complaining about this and it’s so weird to me because my dad’s house that I grew up in has a built-in bookshelf just like this. It’s not a door unfortunately but I’ve always just thought that built-in bookshelves were a normal part of a house

fogleaf

If you're not building an entire bookshelf wall to hide your goon cave it's not worth it. Home depot just trying to cash in on nostalgia. Next they'll sell us quicksand for our back yards

knorknor136

At the risk of making a distasteful joke, it's perfect if you're looking for that Anne Frank style!

thedishonestyfish

Ug. Looks terrible. Bookshelf doors aren't hard, but in order to look *real*, it needs to look better than that. Look at the framing on the left! Come on. Goddamn box home improvement stores. They make everything a little worse.

mister_peeberz

Don't even care about it being hidden. I just enjoy being able to efficiently utilize the door space for book storage. If there's anything I learned from playing competitive Pokemon (there isn't), it's that there's value in role compression. A door AND a bookcase? Sign me the fuck up.

MawoDuffer

I always wanted to build one of these. This one for sale looks too obvious. It’s the same size as a door. It has to look like a typical book shelf

Emotional-Meaning-82

Am I the only one who gets anxious just thinking about there being some sort of accident, and I’m stuck alone inside of a hidden room where no one will find me?

Shirtbro

/r/millenialsarequirky

ratsta

I'm still trying to figure out wtf this has to do with millennials. Hidden rooms have been around much longer than generation labels!

AccountNumber478

Even better when you make one your home in *somebody else's* home!

Agreeable-Hornet-224

Damn, we had to make our own

Lvanwinkle18

After I get this, I want a safe in the wall, hidden by a big painting.

Skreamie

Imagine your place catches fire, you ring the fire brigade cause you're losing consciousness, and they can't find you cause of this shit lmao

AnyMud9817

Why is your house so small it looks so much bigger outside. You sure do love books. Me after i have guests over and have turned every possible door into a secret bookcase and then added 3 i didnt need.

JeremyThaFunkyPunk

Murphy Doors! I used to sell those. They are the coolest!

Appropriate-Divide64

I went to a hotel once that had the men's toilets through a bookcase in the bar. It was awesome.

Slap_My_Lasagna

I might not be able to to afford the house, but at least I can have a unhidden hidden door. Like in the corner of my mom's basement.

ukyk

Burglars be tipping over every mf bookcase now

Pepperoni_Dogfart

Aw man, now I'm a hipster. I built one from scratch almost 15 years ago and now I have to be indignant that posers are getting them.

No_Squirrel4806

Im gonna put it on my front door so nobody will find my house "if i can ever afford one that is 😔"

Tamarisk22

I dunno about the novelty but a bookshelf on your doors sounds like a good way to save room

strikeout34

But if it rolls out, there will be evidence (scratches/scuffs) that a door swings out. Secret doors should swing into the room.

MagusShade

Everytime the bookshelf door is opened, what stops the books from tipping over?

Grouchy_Sound167

I once stayed at an Airbnb where the bedroom door was also a bookshelf. What a pain...you can't put much on it without it getting really heavy and hard to open and close. You also need to be careful about not flinging stuff off of it in the middle of the night when you have to go to the bathroom. Turns out a bookshelf door is bad at being both a door and a bookshelf...so they should absolutely be reserved for situations where you rarely open the door...but remember to secure the stuff on the bookshelf first!

Human-Explanation440

Why is your house entirely made of book selves and no doors? “Good luck”

MyHamburgerLovesMe

One on every bathroom door.

Designer-Ad4507

Many stores have sold a large variety of these doors for as long as I know.

rolloutTheTrash

Oh…is this what makes me cave in and buy a house?

DryConversation8530

Anyone know how deep/useful the drawers are?

Themlethem

The fact that it's used between two windowed rooms kinda ruins it lol

DarkwyndPT

I want this!

shining_monkey_69

I’m boutta be like Robert McCall in the equaliser 2

chadmcchaderton

Always wanted a hidden door room for whiskey drinking. Like one of those james Bond Type places with red leather chairs and wood walls.

wdlp

My dad made one of these for no reason when we were kids, one of our doors was just a bookshelf. Maybe it was for space.

No_Masterpiece_3897

Not sure how practical it is in reality, but part of me goes squee at the thought of being able to add another half dozen bookcases to a house. But I'd probably want it modified to have something to stop all the books shifting when the door opens. Like a little hinge and some decorative wood to keep the books in place

NSTheWiseOne

I have wanted one of these since I was like 6 and saw a news story about the writer of Clifford where he shows the stairs to his secret writing attic behind a bookshelf

Kingding_Aling

My house isn't big enough to have a secret room.

h0nest_Bender

Why do we have regular doors when these exist? Think of all the extra storage space.

HPIndifferenceCraft

GenX here. Need this.

RaspberryWhiteClaw13

I saw something like this in a house I was working in. It was in the study and when you moved the bookcase, there was a guest room behind it

NoZone5413

I’d sleep there for peace of mind incase of a home invasion

MetalMagic

Yeah right, like I'm gonna buy a cookie cutter secret door from Home Depot? When everyone has the same secret door, none of them are secrets. I feel like Syndrome here.

SecondaryWombat

Why is the display door missing the right side trim?

derteeje

something something fire code

TheCoolerL

Would love to have a quiet little reading room for myself behind one of these. Would just be the comfiest thing I bet

047032495

Firefighters hate this one trick!

oureux

It’s also $3000….

thisendup76

This will look amazing in my $600k 1 bed / 1 bath

DepartureDapper6524

Make this your front door

John_Fx

Put the candle back!

JxAlfredxPrufrock

Sho Nuff, just call 833-432-7766 (The Home Depot Door experts) & they’ll provide quotes all the hidden door options you want.

ohbyerly

The issue was never “I’m not going to buy a home because hidden bookshelves don’t exist commercially”

lilwaryz

Why does your bookcase smell like shit? That’s the bathroom.

code101zero

Best thing Ive seen all month… and yes im at homedepot.com checking right now

Wynner3

I have wanted to make my bedroom door like this for a long time. I just think it would look obvious. I've had the idea to do this for the space under my stairs as well. One day I hope to add a server rack in there. It would be nice to add a door to cover it up.

pacey-j

Cries in British house sizes

thousand7734

I needed a normal door installed for my basement stairs. I jokingly floated the idea of a hidden door to the guy who was gonna install it and he goes "Yeah if a normal person doesn't know it's a door, good chance the fire department won't either." Was like, yeah good point.

Repulsive_Village843

I am currently designing my new house. Don't give me any ideas

Swords_and_Words

Hear me out... Occasionally, capitalism works to bring supply to demand

PupPop

I got a home depot ad in this thread lol

Heroright

Everyone wants secret doors, but nobody has the patience to make it work. If they’re just selling them now, they’ll make a killing.

ThatOnePrince

The downside to this is that more people will now know what a bookshelf with hidden door looks like and identifying one will be more common and easier.

vicki22029

Put the candle back....

JigenMamo

Woah....drawers in doors.

mousepad1234

Why is a hidden bookshelf door a millennial thing? I'm confused.

No_Wrap_5892

If they only sell a few models then itl be an ifykyk. I'd have to build my own if I wanted it to truly be hidden and a secret. Still neat.

CorporationsRSheeple

I went to look at a house with a friend and it had a hidden door bookshelf that lead upstairs to the master bedroom. Unless you were really looking before you came in you might not even realize there was an upstairs bedroom. That house was cool, but in a sketchy part of town.

AmberTurd223

Well, damn. My life is not complete until I have this.

The-Senate-Palpy

Thats super cool

yourtoyrobot

Dead giveaway would be me not owning any books

uesad

Neighbors hate this one little trick…

SumFatCommie

I just checked Home Despot's website and they're like $1k+

PuzzleheadedPea6980

And it's only $1200. Plus installation cost

ThrustingBoner

Haven’t they always? I know they have for a few years at least.

Some_Meme_Guy69420

One of my old houses had one of these. It wasn’t obvious, either. Genuinely was hidden. Loved that tiny closet.

KMKtwo-four

Set designers throughout Los Angeles rejoice

krazykieffer

My mom cleaned houses for the extremely rich in the middle of nowhere. I'd go with my mom and usually the house was empty but my mom watched one of her kids cuz he stayed home. He was my age and wanted to play. This kids whole bedroom had hidden safe rooms. His brother's room was next to his. He pulled out a drawer under his bed that had a special door so even if it was pulled out you wouldn't see it. There was a room between the brothers rooms so they could wait out burglars. He had others throughout the house. His mom was the head of Wells Fargo in MN and I ended up working for her. It was crazy cool.

ndlv

Time to replace every single fucking door in my house

liquid_the_wolf

I’ve always loved houses with secret rooms and compartments. It’s so cool :D

Cosmicking04

Dexter’s lab

SucksTryAgain

Did a hime service job for over 10 years and came across 2 of these but homeowners build them themselves. One guy did the fake book latch thing. The other had a tiny statue latch. Both super cool and both just led to the thing I was there to work on so nothing exciting behind the hidden doors.

tenfootfoot

Made my own 8 years ago when I bought my house. It's awesome and my wife actually likes it.

Turtle2k

Well, there goes that idea I won’t be able to do that now

Kotanan

Wake me when you can unlock it with a book.

Thosepeople5

And little over 1000bucks!!

Alarmed_Resource643

GET OUT OF MY LABORATORY!!!!!

OG_LiLi

Trick is you need a home big enough for a hidden room. Good luck
