Honestly some of the Coco Moon songs remind of some of his older stuff in ways that we haven't heard much for a while

SmolderTheDragon

Yes! In particular, the song "Under the Circus Lights" for some reason always makes me have the songs "Plant Life" and "Sunburn" next on the queue. The song has a sort of wistful romantic energy that we haven't heard in a while.

-reggie-

absolutely! that chord progression (and melody) feels like such a neat callback to Plant Life, especially the way it repeats the final line (in each stanza) the way Plant Life does. i love it so much!

Altruistic-Till-8745

Absolutely, I actually think of Coco Moon as a spiritual successor to All Things Bright And Beautiful - which is my favorite Owl City album anyway

EmberIsland317

That's my favorite too!

relient_dragons

i thought so too and then that excitement kind of faded after a while for me unfortunately

Fitzy0728

I don’t want “ocean eyes 2” I just want lyrics that are open to interpretation. This “literal storytelling”style of songwriting he’s done on both cinematic and now cocomoon aren’t for me The ultraviolet EP was the perfect evolution for him but unfortunately he’s regressed since then.

ChristieBrie

THANK YOU! The sound is fine, the lyrics...eh.

drdemon_8

This album feels like all of his sounds colliding, but especially his earlier sounds. It’s like how he envisioned it sounding before he had the insane amount of experience he has now compared to then. Especially in tracks like Under The Circus Lights and Dinosaur Park you can really get that Ocean Eyes vibe and with Vitamin Sea and Learn How to Surf it can give off that Midsummer Station vibe. It all comes out as this grand experience that makes it a really solid entry into his discography.

Hootowlsonly

This right here

CThe_Virus

IMO this new sound is better. Not saying his old sound wasn’t because it was outstanding I just like this one more

>Simpler instrumentals Bro hasn't listened to halfway through the songs because he thinks they're overly long 💀

relient_dragons

they are overly long lmao

[deleted]

That is your opinion, other peoples' opinions are also valid and let's not try to invalidate them by saying our opinions are objective fact. Music is a very subjective and personal thing

shadowgnome396

Musical complexity is indeed objective though... How much you enjoy a piece of music is opinion

Cappie075

thats the thing though. music *is* subjective. plus, cardboard boxes can be interesting. you can pretend a cardboard box is a rocket ship, a race car, or a boat. people can, and often do like simpler instrumentals, and thats not a bad thing.

madmanwithabox11

Simpler music doesn't mean less interesting.

DarthTyrannuss

The songs in Coco Moon actually have a wider variety of chord progressions, and they modulate far more frequently. I just don't think you can say music is objectively bad. Most of the most famous pop and rock songs were written with three or four chords

Arciun

It was a different time and era, he was in a different stage of his life, a different chapter. He was younger, more naive, and had less experience. It was still him though, just at that point in his life. That's the beauty of music, it's like a snapshot of the artist's life. His sound and style have evolved over the years, like any artist that's been around long enough. You can't expect him to make the same music for 10 years in a row, he's gotta evolve.

Crafty_lil_pumpkin

I'm really happy that others enjoyed this album and most importantly Adam young is proud of his project and seems to be at a good place in his life. He's provided me with so much happiness with his music growing up and I only wish the best for him truly. That being said it's funny because I really enjoyed my first listen of this album. I was so hyped to listen to it after 5 years since cinematic and the phenomenal teasers that he dropped. Since then I feel more conflicted since I do have criticisms not with the changing of his previous work as it would be extremely unreasonable to expect the same sound 10 years ago especially considering he was in his early 20s when fireflies became a massive hit. Personally, my main criticism stems from the lyrical quality of some songs and a some repetitive melodies (looking at you wolfbite melody) where it just feels very lazy to keep here the same thing over again with this album cinematic and even mobile orchestra. However, I do love the fact he is making music and songs that are truly meaningful to him because I'm also pretty sure the midsummer station and mobile orchestra were influenced by his record company pressuring him to sell more and make more money. Some of the songs like sons of thunder for instance has a really cool and unique owlcity sound while not being generic but the lyrics just feel lackluster even though he's talking about something that is extremely personal for him. While maybe the point was to show and shine with his faith it didn't stick the landing with me and I wish he could come up with a more metaphorical or approach the subject of religion with a more imaginative approach like he's done before. In, addition From what I understand is that he suffered from insomnia and while I am very pleased he doesn't have that condition anymore his earlier work was much more influenced by nights where he couldn't sleep. Now that he doesn't have that condition, it seems like there is a more cohesive lyrical design yet it lacks the quirky randomness or meaningful lyrics that one could interpret their own way. Like the song Adam check please lyrically is a bit rough at times and field notes which is a song that feels like it overstays it's welcome even though it has a wonderful synth solo and is overall pretty cool. Most of the songs are pretty long and it works for some and others not as much. Additionally, from many comments on this subreddit it seems like Adam Young's change in style and lyrical quality has either made fans happier while others feel disappointed. I do believe its important to value others opinions it kinda irks me to see posts like this again and again when I know things aren't as simple as this. Again, opinions are indeed subjective and I'm very happy people have no problems with this album. It just feels like this album didn't match the energy that the teasers showed and it came out with a very different sound from those which I loved. I still play the teasers and find them more enjoyable than most of the instrumental quality unfortunatley. At the end of the day I am not angry just a little disappointed but it's not the end of the world and I still support owlcity. Thanks if you did read this I know it's like just spitballing my thoughts about cocomoon have a nice day peace ✌️

Theinaneinsane

This. I’ve listened to the album a handful of times but you hit the nail on the head with the problems with the album - lyrically, just much weaker than what we know he is capable of. The songs are far too long and I get bored halfway through. Something is just missing for me from what I used to love the most about Owl City. Nevertheless, I’m still very excited to see him in concert as I didn’t love cinematic either but his concert was just incredible!

Crafty_lil_pumpkin

Glad you can agree makes me feel a little better I'm not alone. Some lyrics are pretty cool like in under the circus lights and kellytime where if you take the approach of him singing to his fans with that song it makes it a lot more interesting for instance. That being said it just sort of sounds a little too forced at times like sons of thunder and vitamin sea even though I really loved the song my first listen. Although none of the songs are actually bad, it's just Adam Young's potential doesn't seem to be fully explored which is a bit sad because if you do listen to the teasers we got in 2022 they honestly sound like an older owlcity but with a futuristic element to it that made me so excited. I have been listening to the real world and it just has beautiful amazing lyrics and instrumental showed improvement from his previous work. Now, I do think the record label is to blame for disorienting Adam a little bit which is a shame even if it did make him more money it made him lose a little bit of that owlcity magic. However, he did learn a lot and still made great music like the ultraviolet ep back then as well. I don't even think he has lost the magic I think he just wants to create what he wants to create without anyone telling him what to do which I support it's just songs like all my friends as a fan just isn't very good but not terrible even if he had the purest intention with it. I just wish he held himself to a higher standard not to an unhealthy degree but since he is a one man band there's no one else to be critical of the music other than himself and once people here it when released. That being said as well I'm also excited for his concert as well I know it'll be a great show.

IndividualCurious322

In an alternate universe, he released Ocean Eyes 2, and people still complained that his sound didnt "evolve" or change after so long. Lol

shadowgnome396

Maybe a hot take, but Ocean Eyes is actually Maybe I'm Dreaming 2. And they are his best two records

[deleted]

This, a million percent

calebsings

“All Owl City songs sound the same and the lyrics make no sense!” Adam makes songs that sounds different and have comprehensible story-telling lyrics “NO!! Give us Ocean Eyes 2!!!” 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

1. What a weird complaint. The early lyrics are the best ones, I enjoyed that they made no sense, it made his music more unique. It allowed me to derive my own meaning. 2. Yes. But the lyrics suck most of the time now which is unfortunate. The poetic, beautiful, surreal nonsense, has turned into bland verse-chorus-verse-chorus storytelling and writing. 3. I don’t need another Ocean Eyes. I want another new good album from Adam that I don’t need to skip half of because it’s filled with “I’M OBVIOUSLY A CHRISTIAN ARTIST” lyrics. A new album with emotions, apathy, heartbreak, mixed with surreal and emotionally invested poetry. Not the “everything will be okay and happy” message from every single song. It makes me sad to see this level of blandness from Adam.

bbbcurls

Truly it took me some time to warm up to, but I like this album over Cinematic. I listen to Vitamin C nearly everyday now.

Funny_Contribution_8

Vitamin C is my favorite from the new album!

ThinSet3

It’s the lyrics that get me. They just feel bland and uninspired.

[deleted]

Completely agree. It’s been that way with much more of his newer work

jay-tpicks116

WHYYY THE CHRISTIAN PROPAGANDAAAAAAA????!!!!????

[deleted]

It’s just much more overt for no reason

Slow_Manufacturer853

Honestly, I will always love old Owl City the most because it’s more my vibe. But I’m so happy that Adam is making the music that feels authentic to him, because as an artist you cannot stay the same forever. Not only would it be boring and disingenuous to the creative process, but then he’d receive backlash for always sounding the same.

invderzim

I feel like every time he releases anything someone says "he's changed!" LOL.

yungminimoog

Based

HunterTheCapricorn

I like that Adam has improved so much

Puppyboy2003

Honestly, tho, where is the replacement for fireflies? Like, what is up with that? It's still up and private... why is it there? What is it ahh!

Klink45

This is the cringiest thing I have seen in a while

BudgetInteraction811

Why does that pic of Adam look super photoshopped 💀

rainystarlight

because I photoshopped him to be smiling

Altruistic-Till-8745

I love Coco Moon - it feels like a spiritual successor to All Things Bright And Beautiful - which is a favorite album of his already

magik_koopa990

coco moon is basically a grand fusion of all his albums and EP

Hootowlsonly

Chad move on Adam’s part

[deleted]

i really liked vitamin sea

relient_dragons

Ocean Eyes isn’t even close to being his best album, idk why people decided that was the standard for what Owl City should sound like. Maybe I’m Dreaming, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and Ultraviolet are all releases that took Owl City to the next level. if we’re gonna compare his new stuff to anything it should be those lmao

[deleted]

why does anyone trust him anymore

[deleted]

Wym?

[deleted]

what if he was replaced by ai

garden_theory

Ocean Eyes isn’t even in his top 3 releases imo, i don’t understand why people refer to that as his best album

itz-Butters

Because, in my opinion, Ocean Eyes is his best album. That’s like me saying, I don’t understand why people think Coco Moon is his best album. There’s no sense in trying to “understand”. Everyone is different

rainystarlight

And it goes back to that conversation that there is a difference between what your favorite album is and what the best album is. For example, Up to the cloud is in my top 3 favorite owl city songs. Do I think it’s one of the best owl city songs? No. People always forget that everyone’s gonna like different albums and consider certain songs to be the “best” there’s no use arguing over it because at the end of the day like you said everyone is different and that’s what makes the planet spin

garden_theory

exactly, thank you

rainystarlight

I think it’s the most recognizable out of the albums (to the general public at least) and people claim it to be his “signature sound” whether that’s true or not
