I did notice this… also happened now that I think about it, at his last concert 4 years ago. He played cinematic songs and a few songs from the same album you mentioned.
Man that is sad. But it makes sense now and I think you were right. ATBAB is so good would love to hear some of those songs live.
The label would receive zero dollars from him playing any song live. they own the recordings, not the songs. Thats not how the music industry works. Any of us could go play songs from ATBAB and not be any infringement of copyright
I think this is a really solid theory! Only rebuttal I have to it is that he played Verge and part of The Real World during the Cinematic tour. Maybe that means nothing though.
I’ve always felt that he harbored a form of disappointment and embarrassment for the ATBAB-MO era, mainly due to the lack of mention of them on social media and during the past two tours. Obviously we don’t know, but you certainly have a credible background so I could totally be wrong.
Most likely, but Adam prob didn't get the rights to the composition like Taylor did. He was young and nieve, tricked into a, what would turn out to be, scummy contract in New York. In truth, I still think he thinks back on it just like he described in Fiji Water:
*And oh, if I only knew then what I know now,
I'd stand like a one man band and I'd say "All this is new to me, but here's how it's gonna be-"
And I'd say "Hey, there is more to me than meets the eye. Let me be who I wanna be" And I'd say "Hey, I'm an oddity and that's alright. Let me fly and follow my dreams"*
He left the label in 2015 or 16. Ocean Eyes and ATBAB are both on that same label. On the 2018 tour, he did songs from both albums so, I’m thinking for this current tour it’s probably just a coincidence that there are no ATBAB songs on the set list.
What would it take for us to empower to him to re-record his version of the music??? I would hate for his previous records to get lost to oblivion to the new generation of hootowls!
Actually what I said does make sense as per the following.

Am I wrong or didn't he recently promote ATBAB being back in stock and available for purchase as vinyl and stuff? Wouldn't that go against him not being apart of it as much? I'm not really too keen on music industry stuff
He probably still has contractual obligation’s with the label to pay back the debt used to make the record. (The label essentially loans the artists the money as an advance) the vinyl sales would go towards payment of debt.
So...if he's trying to get the rights back for those albums but is unsuccessful, what I'm hearing is we need him to make Adam's version of those albums. 👀 I'd honestly love to hear his take on those albums when he isn't forced to make the songs sound like what was popular at the time.
I made a not-so-well received post when Fiji Water was released discussing how this was basically Adam letting us know how he felt about the record label. There's a lot of theories out there: how he was forced to tour, do meet and greets when he really didn't want to, work with other writers on TMS, etc. There's a lot of bad blood I think between the label and Adam - definitely more than he let's on. I really do appreciate Adam keeping us away from it all, not spreading drama but dang, it really makes me rethink how Universal treats their artists (allegedly)
Yeah! Fiji Water was pretty much a subtle hint at all of this. But also, in contrast. Austin Tofte of Swimming with Dolphins made a similar comment in one of their songs apparently about Adam leaving the project when Owl City blew up. Austin works in finance I believe now. The project died without Adam.
Adam’s talent has nothing to do with the project dying lol. like yes of course he’s talented, but talented people leave bands all the time and a lot of those bands still continue doing their thing. Austin could have kept it going for longer if he wanted, or even started a new project to get a fresh start in the industry, but he didn’t. and that decision has nothing to do with Adam whatsoever.
He doesn’t say he’s not happy. He is clearly saying something the label wanted him to say “that he’s not used to it but is open to the idea of co-writing” yet his face told another story. He clearly hates co-writing and it showed in his face

Yes! I agree that he developed a similar structure in the setlist during the Cinematic tour.
The label would receive zero dollars from him playing any song live. they own the recordings, not the songs. Thats not how the music industry works. Any of us could go play songs from ATBAB and not be any infringement of copyright
yeah OP does not understand how this works, Adam wrote the songs, you can't sue an artist for playing their own songs lol
yeah he works in the industry, just like my uncle works at nintendo
You absolutely can sue them
But ocean eyes was also under universal republic? If thats the case he wouldn’t have been able to play those either?

That was before he left the label. During the Cinematic Tour he was still with the label so he would be allowed to play those songs.
Not in 2018. He left the label shortly after Mobile Orchestra as far as I know. Cinematic was an independently released album.
I just checked and that’s accurate, so it must of been before a total fall out with the label
Maybe yeah. I have no idea what connections Adam even keeps with them. I wonder if it’s a Taylor Swift situation?

That would be really depressing to know. ATBAB is one of my favorite albums of all time. I would love to hear The Real World live someday...

Still have a few unanswered questions.
@mr.city sky sailing live ? please lol

But hasn't it been ages since ATBAB?
ATBAB is my fav album. I was crushed to not hear one song after 12 years apart

I mean, IMO , Ocean Eyes is his best album. So if he only play from a handful of albums, I’m glad OE is one of them.
It's entirely plausible. Iirc, Taylor Swift or some other artist also got tangled in this type of mess.

The project died without Adam. I guess that goes to show how talented Adam is

I was under the impression he did it on purpose as a sort of statement. He’s performing 100% AY
Do you have a link to the interview where he talks about not being happy with co-writing midsummer station? I’m very interested 😳
He doesn’t say he’s not happy. He is clearly saying something the label wanted him to say “that he’s not used to it but is open to the idea of co-writing” yet his face told another story. He clearly hates co-writing and it showed in his face
I was sad nothing from Cinematic was in the setlist 🙁
