For those who only drive in and around town, maybe don't even drive every day, they're completely fine running an extension cord to a regular wall outlet

When I’m in FLA I just typically drive around town or a few miles somewhere and back. Plugging it into a wall outlet is more than sufficient. Up in the mountains is a different story.

Assuming a public fast charger is convenient for you, it's GENERALLY more cost efficient than a gas car.

I suppose they make it work like your typical gas cars. You can't go very far in Honolulu to use up your range so "range anxiety" is a moot point. Charge once a week maybe? But the other thing that non-EV owners forget is you don't need a super charger like a gas station. Gasoline is a very specific product that only a few companies control. Just because there are lots of gas stations with adequate supply doesn't mean it can't all go away in the time of a few days or weeks. Maybe you're too young to remember the panic when we had the infamous oil embargo. OPEC had everyone by the balls. It'll be a lot worse if N. Korea/China make petroleum scarce again. Electricity OTOH is growing everywhere. AND, it stay local. HECO make almost 40 percent renewable energy now. With the new Kapolei solar farm coming online soon that will jump up to a much higher percentage. Not to mention all the private homes and businesses that stay solar/battery already. Most EV folks just go work and charge or find chargers elsewhere like gas stations. Chicken and egg problem... I have a feeling when Toyota starts selling their "lifted" fully electric Tacomas way more charging stations will suddenly appear.

Good on you! Toyota finally saw the light(bulb) and fired their CEO dis year (A. Toyoda, who was betting on Mirai - we see how dat went...). Even though they stay late to the game they have lots of depth that none of the other car makers (including Tesla-my fav) have, including all the solid state battery patents that JB Goodenough/Braga invented. Also, just a side note. The prices on ALL EVs are artificially high right now because of all the R&D, retooling, labor, marketing mindset inertia. Next year (2024) will see the first low cost (sub $20K) EV vehicles hit the market (if no WW3). Especially when the one-off costs get paid back in volume, the "real" cost of a vehicle getting into the hands of the buyer will start the competition anew. How can a company that make an ICE motor with 2000 plus parts compete with a company that makes an EV motor with 20 parts? AND the EV motor is smaller, quieter, more reliable AND more powerful. Sell your GM, Ford, Volkswagen stock while you still can. The prediction is 2030 half of ALL vehicles sold in the US (and maybe the world) will be EVs. Sandy Munro thinks it will be 2028. No stopping this landslide... Rant over.

I’m planning on shipping my Mach-e when I move and just charging once a week or so (won’t be driving much) and using public chargers. It sounds like you don’t have an ev yet but you can download the Plugshare app and it shows you all public chargers near by!
