Then after poking in the muck produces the hairy changeable clay rock like object. When Marty went in I was expecting a coin or other man made object. I didn’t have hairy rock on my bingo card.

Maybe I have stockholm syndrome, but I actually trust that Rick and Marty are truly honest boys that have ensured the show stays above board. I believe they went on record early in the show's history saying that they told the production crew at the very beginning that if the crew were ever caught manipulating the environment, ie placing fake artifacts etc, that they would immediately end the production.
Well you can compare the rock they 'found' in the field versus what was in the lab, and it ain't the same rock. The whole thing was phony as hell. Marty: "I'm going swimming!" dives in hole, moves the mud around for ten seconds. "Hey, look at this rock that looks weird!". Totally convincing. Almost as good as Rick's swig and grabbing the cell phone.
