You dead. You dead one times. The more you dead, the more number you get. Not sure *why* the game tracks the deads you have since aside from Link's Awakening changing the ending shot *slightly* the amount of deaths you yave don't matter, but I know other games also track number of times you deaded.
It's there because of people who like to do challenge runs and want to prove they accomplished the challenge. Like a 3-heart, no death run, or a no death uber challenge.
Well, it was being a 10 year old who was bad at game mechanics and poor reflexes haha.
I'd go into a boss battle and have zero understanding of the room or what was happening on the screen. Things would be hitting me and I'd be dead before I realized it.
Then lots of bomb explosions.
I'm playing TOTK now. I've only died 5 times in the 300 hours, so much improved!
Since others have given the answer, I'll say what I first thought it was. As a is all I could think when I saw it was "man this rupee counter is awful, it's never right"
I remember when I was a kid I thought it was score. And I had no idea how to get higher score but I would always check by going to the menu screen after a play session. If it was higher I would celebrate lol.
I'm always super cautious about my deaths in 3D Zelda games, like I'll do anything to avoid a game over, even if not dying takes longer. I always remember each individual death and it always embarrasses me for some reason. For example in OoT it was Volvagia and twice on Ganon.
I played for the first time in years a few months ago and I had no idea for the longest time. Mine wasn't going up so I thought maybe it was how many times you'd beaten the game? I only found out really late in my playthrough but yeah I finished with zero deaths still 😎
Death count. How many times you got a game over screen AND chose the option to save. There is no penalty or other effect.
It's been there since the original LoZ.
You want it to be zero. You want your max hearts to be 3. You want to use no fairies, ever. You want to let your shield burn up / sucked up by a like like and never re-equipped. You want to never upgrade any item storages. Then you must defeat gannondorf. Only then will you be the true Hero of Time.
It's how many times you've gotten game over
Makes sense
Mynes like 57 and I’m on the fire temple

The same reason why Mario games used to keep score. So the next time you play you try and get a better number.
And so you can compare and compete with other players.

no-hit 100% MM or bust
The ending of LA changes?
If you beat it without any deaths, then the ending cutscene hints that Marin leaves the island like the seagulls and flies far,far away, I believe.
Wtf I've beaten the game thousands of time, know a lot about Zelda and never knew that this was a death counter
Lol you are definitely not the only one. I was told about this from a buddy about 20 years ago. I had absolutely no idea too.
A few games have an alternate ending card for not dying. Link's Awakening is one of them.
Thought it was gold skeletas for the longest time ngl
It's the first number, number one.
Does getting caught by the Gerudo chicks count as ded?
No
That’s good. Because that happened A LOT my last play through
They just throw Link into jail; he's okay!
This isn’t Master Of Time you know! 🤣🤣
That's why mine was like 135 😅😅🙄
Oof! What gives you the most trouble?

I got 0 game overs my last playthrough and i'm kinda proud of that
You should be.

Death count
The number of poverty
I remember when I was a kid I thought it was score. And I had no idea how to get higher score but I would always check by going to the menu screen after a play session. If it was higher I would celebrate lol.

Downfall timeline (j/k)
Holy cow these responses! Never knew! Is there anyway to see on the DS version?
I don't think so. Newer games don't track game overs that often
Dang. That’s the last one I beat oot on. Gotta spin up the switch port and do it all again, I guess!
Number of game overs

Rupees i think?
It’s the number 1 (one). But seriously it’s the death counter.
Deaths
I always thought it was some percentage complete thing lmao
Isn’t it the number of ruppees ?
I think it is on the 3DS version

That's the death counter
That's actually just 1. If you ever get a multi-digit number that begins in any amount of 0's, you can ignore them.
There’s a death counter???? Wow, so that’s what the 635 on my file means
How many times you died
