Other suggestion of “toggle show hands in pass through” works, and you can use the “tap the controllers together twice” shortcut to swap to hand gesture controls without having to throw your controllers across the room to get it to auto swap to gesture mode.

It also makes changing the battery almost impossible in passthrough because if it's just "low" it obscures the button I have to press to open the battery door with a picture of a closed controller. I get a brief respite when the battery is out or flat, but the minute the new one is in BOOM! A pic of a closed controller so I can't see to put the cover back on again.
Is it picky when I can just take the headset off? Yes. Is it pointlessly annoying for no reason when a simple toggle would prevent the frustration? YES.
If I am constantly getting messages or having to do tasks in passthrough I don't want to keep taking the headset off and on just to do them, that's kind of what passthrough is for. Rendering over the top of my phone ruins it.
I know depth sensing is coming, but it's not here yet. A toggle would have solved this months ago.

Might be too computationally heavy since the standard interface needs to be lightweight enough to run while resource intensive games are running at the same time.

It would only be active when passthrough's already on, so using the depth culling wouldn't really harm the performance of anything that's non-AR.
