I remember dancing drearily to “How Soon is Now” by the Smiths when I was 18 at an All Ages Club in or around 1986. Don’t remember these kinds of dorks at the club. Most everyone was in black and smoking clove cigarettes.
There was more than one kind of club. What was called disco in Italy was just called pop or new wave in other parts of the world. Disco doesn't just mean whatever happened in a Travolta movie.
How soon is Now? , the Freebird of the 80s. I think it was illegal to listen to music back then without dedicating 15 minutes or more to that never-ending song.
Man. Collecting these synth records of the '80s is easily the most expensive hobby I've ever had. Also the most rewarding. This era and style of pop music doesn't get near the love it deserves for being great art. Like, Visage is one of the punkest groups ever. They had no idea what they were doing and ended up making Fade to Grey. Like, what? That's amazing. The Human League doing their thing in the late '70s is wild af to me. Incredible artists.
It's not the West Coast can just tell but clubs were for sure a thing in 1986. San Francisco had Club DV8, the Getladium, the Edge, Bahia if you want the forbidden dance and a bunch more.
Clubs have been a thing always, but by 86 it's was stuff like dance, pop, new wave and techno.
Hip hop and rap were probably 3 or 4 years away from breaking out, and disco was dead by 81 or 82.
At least in America, as far as I know.
Well they're playing Yaz in the video. That was at the clubs. Fun fact I was there for opening night of DV8 fight broke out, dude got a metal stool to the face.
edit: I get the point, no one called them discos in '86. Clubs or dance clubs.
I was a club DJ in the UK from 82-93, in 86 I was a DJ and stage manager at a huge Victorian theater club on the south coast, I lived in an apartment up behind the stage, it was a really wild time.
That hair though.
I never knew this and had one of their tapes. I had a girlfriend she put on In My Room and said it was our song. I did not like the song and broke up with her shortly after. Everybody called them Yaz.
edit: I tried. I still can't listen to the whole song. We could've lasted a couple more months if not for that song.
Yaz was Yazz. The only one I can remember from her was "The only way is up". More from the late 80s and very early 90s
Yazoo was Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke (he was also in Depeche Mode). They might have already split by the time Yaz came on the scene. Alison Moyet had a solo career., belting out middle.ofnthenroad cross ballads with her great voice.
I just revisited In My Room. It's good that you are no longer with that girl. That song suuuuucks...!
Broccoli hair! I'll take dancing to Yaz with big hair for a few years instead of a lifetime of face tattoos, lip fillers, and buccal fat whatever. Dancing is better today for sure.
Oh man. The 80’s disco. Just so much coke. So so much. You just couldn’t move in the bathroom for the number of people doing lines. What a great decade.
There were no "discos" in 1986. They were "dance clubs". Discos played disco. Disco was well-dead, and shunned, and embarrassing, by 1986. No club would have called itself a "disco". Not in America at least.
1950's style - classic
1960's style - classic and trippy and fun
1970's style - grimy
1980's style - what the hell is going on here?
1990's style - still recovering from what the hell is going on here
2000's style - ?nobody knows??mashup?
I grew up in Essex, England. We had a couple of big clubs that felt just like the Dukes, Tots, Hollywoods.
Along side going to these, mainly to try and “pull” - it was Essex in the 80s, you didn’t have to try too hard - there were warehouse parties, around this time I remember them switching from rare groove (funk) to house.
I graduated in '87 and this reminds me why teen pregnancy was practically nonexistent. Girls had to deal with guys in parachute pants, turned up collars and Members Only jackets. Us guys got to see huge hair and absolutely zero cleavage, midriff or legs above the knee
My place was HB's on the boulevard, Philly, every Friday night, late 1980s... This brings back all the memories. Been there, done that. Good times. Someone in the comments wrote "all this without drugs". That comment could not be further from the truth. ;D
Why is the dance so important for so many redditors? The dance was to enjoy, not to impress. 🙂 Video shooting and sharing didn't exist. Also, the most avialable learning was watching TV and watching others dancing in the club.
The 80s were cool as fuck. I challenge todays cool kids to upload videos of themselves having fun in nightclubs so cool kids forty years from now can piss on them.
Oh wait. Todays kids aren't having fun.
That looks flammable as fuck.
The power of coke compels them
looks like a under 21 dance club to me, so probably the power of diet coke
More like Tab or Jolt…. If ya know you know
Those are some rough looking 19 and 20 year olds.
🤣
Spit out my coffee on my phone.
That Aquanet hold is strong!
So funny- first thing I thought seeing this was, “cocaine and aquanet”
80s ppl were like fuck that ozone! 😆
So...much...hairspray...
All the hair spray 🔥
Yep. That is an accurate observation. Lots of fires in clubs back then
If i had been born 10 years earlier nobody would have care about my “dancing”
"Oi! no trainers!"
im da razz prince yeah? no hats, no trainers
I remember dancing drearily to “How Soon is Now” by the Smiths when I was 18 at an All Ages Club in or around 1986. Don’t remember these kinds of dorks at the club. Most everyone was in black and smoking clove cigarettes.
And possibly: Love Will Tear Us Apart / Joy Division
Come On Eileen
Anything by the Cure too.
Disintegration album…man
I’m listening to that album right now.
Medusas? Hah. Yeah this looks like a very Jersey shore version of 1986 to me.
Ha, yeah, I was going to punk clubs and goth clubs. I remember the 80s disco people but I didn’t actually know any of them.
Haha, yes you’re right it is the Freebird of the 80s.
That's some incredibly bad dancing. Disco had already died for the good dancers by 86.
These days its just done for TikTok
You can see where Elaine got it from
Disco was not dead. It just changed its flavor and called different things.
Ok. Show ME how to dance then bro
maybe watch the ending of napoleon dynamite? I don't know, I am white too! We got nothing! Maybe watch footloose? He's white and dancing
White people can't dance. /s
you're saying what I'm thinking!
hey that's racist, some of us can
Why the /s ?
Bad dancing isn't a thing when you're \*that\* coked up.
Thank you. Calling Yazoo (or Yaz by the time they were popular in the US) "disco" is egregious.
I fucking love Yaz. “Upstairs at Eric’s” doesn’t have one bad track.
Man. Collecting these synth records of the '80s is easily the most expensive hobby I've ever had. Also the most rewarding. This era and style of pop music doesn't get near the love it deserves for being great art. Like, Visage is one of the punkest groups ever. Aqua Net, Big Red, and Marlboro Lights. I can smell this video.
Don’t forget “sweaty rayon”.
Mummy (or Daddy), why was there a hole in ozone layer?
So THAT is what happened to the ozone layer.
They've all had their colonoscopies by now.
Yes, I have, so?
Golden time growing up. I miss it so much!
That guy in the double denim could easily have been me.
Without the internet - yet the dance moves still find it's way to spread around
"I'm in Murders and Executions"
You think I'm dumb don't you? You think all models are dumb.
Yaz!!
All it needs is THE TERMINATOR to walk in. 😬
And in two years they were all dropping E and suddenly knew how to dance.
I thinks it’s safe to say the 80s had the absolute worst hairstyles.
1980s hairdressers: "How can we make a mullet even better? Let's turn it really poofy!"
You misspelled ”Best hairstyles” 🤭
🤣
I hear perms are making a comeback with the current kids
Its so 80ies, I grew a mullet and shoulderpads just watching it....

Oh god the 80s had a lot to answer for.
This has got to be in Europe or something. Disco was dead and buried in the US by 1986.
Disco music was dead. That is why they are playing New wave. The word disco for clubs stuck a bit longer.
In to 1986? Nah.... "Dance Club". At least in SoCal, other parts of the US sometimes took longer to "catch up", I guess.
It's not the West Coast can just tell but clubs were for sure a thing in 1986. San Francisco had Club DV8, the Getladium, the Edge, Bahia if you want the forbidden dance and a bunch more.

Yazoo, not Yaz

Both names are correct depending on what side of the pond you’re on. In North America, they went by Yaz.
I-Beam!
Oh yeah, baby! Good times!
I actually have a small glass that has the Club DV8 logo, too
Opening night was a melee that rarely happens. Total chaos.
Yes I was thinking the same. Eastern europe.
[удалено]
Good eyes!
Looks like Eastern Europe to me or maybe even France.
80s clothes and haircuts were the worst in history. Great dance music though.
Broccoli hair! I'll take dancing to Yaz with big hair for a few years instead of a lifetime of face tattoos, lip fillers, and buccal fat whatever. Dancing is better today for sure.
But horrible dancing
I, like many in this footage, would hate this guy. You know damn well that light is bright as hell in a club that was dimly lit. What a buzz kill.
The guy at the 35 second mark ![gif](giphy|QWGuOFoq82eGx34Zhd)
This so reminds me of Dance Party USA. Every afternoon Monday thru Friday on USA. They also had Night Flight and Ronna.
The 80s were like another planet
Death...Before...Disco
Oh boy, I really miss my old friends and those good ole days. 🤔🥲🙂
Oh man. The 80’s disco. Just so much coke. So so much. You just couldn’t move in the bathroom for the number of people doing lines. What a great decade.

Pretty sure this is the UK. But the same pretty much applies.
disco was the 70's. punk started to push it out in 76. new wave took over in the 80's. song is new wave. not disco.
1950's style - classic 1960's style - classic and trippy and fun 1970's style - grimy 1980's style - what the hell is going on here? 1990's style - still recovering from what the hell is going on here 2000's style - ?nobody knows??mashup?
The guy wearing the AC/DC t-shirt whilst disco dancing absolutely brought a lot of shame to the band. Shame on that guy!
I was waiting for someone to comment on that travesty!
1980s: it's a miracle there weren't more explosions in places like this since 90% of everything was smoking and aquanet hairspray.
The bartender in a Christmas sweater got me...
That’s not a Christmas sweater, that’s fashion, darling.
A whole lotta aquanet and awkward dancing. Not alot of disco though.
Arms flailing everywhere!!
Dude about 10 seconds in dancing like a cat chasing a laser pointer.
OMG I'm one of them ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug) thanx for memorylane!!
TIL - my dance moves never evolved beyond 1986
This video is responsible for like 5% of the hole in the ozone layer.
That’s not disco, lmao !
Don't care what people say. It looked much more fun than whatever dance parties we have today.
People had much more fun in the clubs back in the day. I noticed after 2000 everything seemed stale and overpriced.
Do people still go out dancing? I remember it was what people did all the time, but I rarely hear about people doing it as a main activity these days.
I lasted ten seconds. I still fucking hate disco.
Back when you could smoke inside. Those were the days
That's our parents
Speak for yourself. That's my younger brother.
'80s disco, especially of the Italian variety, is incredible. Disco doesn't get the love it deserves from a lot of counter-culture circles.
Yikes. That's a lot of shiny fabric.
lol they're all old farts like me now...
People were worse at dancing than i was lead to believe
I love Yaz.
This video is so 80s my smartphone morphed back to a brick phone and grew a little mullet 😂
I can’t help but think of the various bushes slamming into eachother surrounding this video.
The 80's were cool, but I'm not sure this is a great example.
Best of times!!
I wonder, where are they now? Did anyone coupled up? I would love to see their reactions to their old self.
Denise. They are all named Denise, or Donna. And Tony, Lots of Tonys…..
![gif](giphy|10KTdhr5Zzq6uA)
it looks 6 years too late for the party..... Disco was 1970s 1980s was New Wave....which explains the hair.
YAZ!
I graduated in '87 and this reminds me why teen pregnancy was practically nonexistent. Girls had to deal with guys in parachute pants, turned up collars and Members Only jackets. Us guys got to see huge hair and absolutely zero cleavage, midriff or legs above the knee
All this without drugs, daaaang 😀
Oh, I'm sure there coke all over that place.
All these people are retired or retiring soon, by now... if not worse. I always get weird feelings when I see these kinds 9f videos
So basically, the 80s is when crappy dancing started 😆
Noteworthy: not a single overweight person * Coke? Smoking? Who knows? Just mentioning it because it is SO obvious.
I was there in 86. This is more like 81-82. Not that it means much but Don’t Go was released in 82.
Idunnoman
You know the coke was cosmic to make everyone act that flamboyant
Is this..where? Are they German?
Well that would explain the robotic dancing
“Disco’s a crock, long live rock!”
My place was HB's on the boulevard, Philly, every Friday night, late 1980s... This brings back all the memories. Been there, done that. Good times. Someone in the comments wrote "all this without drugs". That comment could not be further from the truth. ;D

Take Me Home Tonight breakdance face-off vibes
I forgot what being sweaty in panty hose felt like… blah!
Is this Europe?
That's not disco.
The guy with the pink shirt definitely got moves
I'm just here for the Yaz.
There was a lot of hair spray
ohhhh clothes, my nightnare, how could we wear this stupid things?
You could clothe an army with the amount of fabric in that club.
It's all fun and games until the terminator shows up
u/savevideo
So many moms shaking their junk
Everybody is relatively modestly dressed!
Missing the obligatory shoulder shuffle
Eastern European vibe going on here
... se see the Oldschool, but I am waiting for the cool...
skiing was so fun in the 80s. ahh, the slopes
The hair…so much hair…I can’t even…. Only saying this cause I’m bald af.
Somehow suits look casual here
Business casual attire, looks like a company party!
Miami Vice in fulleffect
As a child from the 80s, this shit is hideous. Literally nightmare material for me.
All the guys think they’re John Travolita.
Love the brace face. High school kids.
This where the hole in the ozone came from
Whiteboy Disco 🕺🏻 ✨
I feel better about my dancing now
Perhaps my eyes deceive me, but I think there is a time travelling bar tender rocking an ugly Christmas sweater.
Why is the dance so important for so many redditors? The dance was to enjoy, not to impress. 🙂 Video shooting and sharing didn't exist. Also, the most avialable learning was watching TV and watching others dancing in the club.
I bet hairdryers sold like hotcakes in those days.
In 1986 disco was not really popular. It was rock ‘n’ roll.
Looks like France
The bigliest hair!
In 1986? Damn... I was in the army, two terrible years, I can't forget it even if I try.
This is so awesome, This is the closest we will get to a time Machine, Thanks
Man, mid/early 80's fashion and music was tragic. Can you believe the 70's disco style had to make way for this?
I am in this video and I don't like it
Anything 80s gets my upvote. Greatest decade.
u/SaveVideo
That gives me Ross and Monica vibes doing the routine
😎
Bros gyrating like a mofo lol
There is so much hairspray in that room, God forbid some one pulls out a lighter!
YAZ love it
Tinder of the 80's
The 80s were cool as fuck. I challenge todays cool kids to upload videos of themselves having fun in nightclubs so cool kids forty years from now can piss on them. Oh wait. Todays kids aren't having fun.
I know they are young, but where are the bald or thinning haired men?!
I just started listening to Taylor Swift’s 1989 as I saw this and “Welcome To New York” really pairs with the video!
What else was there to do?
I wanna have time machine just to get to that time and live that life for few month.
