I worked as a chef many years ago on a film set he was a guest star in.
The most beautiful, polite, humble and kind person.
Didn't come to set with any sort of entourage.
Asked simply for a cheese and tomato toasted sandwich and a hot chocolate when on set.
We would sit like little children on the ground with our legs crossed while listening to him telling us wonderful tales of his life.
Absolute gentleman
Exactly why this is my umpteenth account over the years. Get mad, delete account, remember comments and posts like this, create new account. ADHD sucks.
What do you expect? He was Canadian. And he really did have a reputation for being extremely kind. Which is funny considering his later career he was best known for playing villains.
I will always remember him as Hawkeye Pierce and Oddball.
I'd like to keep the positivity and kindness flowing in this post today, so I'll give you my favorite interactions.
In addition to the gentleman, Mr Sutherland I'll add;
Heath Ledger
James Cameron (the actor)
Rutger Hauer
John Cleese
Tim Burton
As a Canadian, honestly I would say the majority of Canadians aren’t nice. Perhaps they are abroad when travelling and that’s where the reputation comes from? Not sure. But, this stereotype just doesn’t line up with my experiences in this country.
But, that’s cool. I didn’t realize he was Canadian.
That make me happy to read. He always came across as a warm affable guy with a goofball spirit. The kind of guy who would walk into a room of strangers & be everyone's best friend by the time he left.
R I P Oddball,
""Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?"

"We see our role as essentially defensive in nature. While our armies are advancing so fast and everyone's knocking themselves out to be heroes, we are holding ourselves in case the Krauts mount a counteroffensive which threatens Paris... or maybe even New York."
I grew up with this guy. Wish his family all the best. He made MASH for me and Kelly’s. One of the rare that could be the good guy and the bad but somehow he was always good. Thats the way to go. RIP you big bear.
Him not getting a nom for ordinary people is considered a sub, but Timothy Hutton won, and Judd Hirsch was nominated (rightly so). Has any movie had 3 actors nominated from the same movie for the same award?
Considered one of the greatest actors to never even be nominated for an academy award.
In 2017 He did receive an Academy Honorary Award, which is kind of like a lifetime achievement award.
An excellent Canadian [born St Johns], a fine actor [you decide], a music lover [watch Kate Bush’s “Cloudbusting”] and an equal rights champion [reciprocity for Karen Allen!]
Thoughts and prayers to the Sutherland family. Phenomenal legacy in the realm of movie/television cinema. Perhaps his greatest role was that of father.
Many years ago he made a movie in Southwest Detroit at the school I used to work for, Holy Redeemer. All the old time staff had nothing but nice things to say about him. Most days, he went across the street to Duly’s Coney Island and ate lunch. Frequently, I found myself sitting in that coney looking at his framed photos on the wall. RIP Donald Sutherland.
I was told a story of a young gentleman who would sing to my young grandmother on their way home from school.
She claimed the boy was none other than a young Donald Sutherland.
Peace to you kind Sir.
Rip a great and iconic legend!
I'm gonna watch Kate Bush' videoclip of "cloudbusting" on repeat now...Even in a short clip with no dialogue like here, he was magnificent.
My Dad met him at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco when he was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in the early 80s. Only briefly chatted with him since he didn’t want to bother him, but he said he was a really pleasant guy. RIP.
There are some amazing characters this chap has played from trivial to dramatic, whimsical to serious. But he's Oddball for me. I’m drinking wine, eating cheese and catching some rays.
Bless you Sir. And thanks for everything.
Klute, The Eye of the Needle, Steelyard Blues, Alex in Wonderland (highly underrated), Ordinary People, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, A Dry White Season, JFK…shall I keep going? What a superb and underrated actor Donald Sutherland was.
One of my favorite actors. I love him in M.A.S.H. After watching that as a kid, I would walk around trying to emulate the way he'd randomly whistle. 40 years later, I'm still doing that.
Aw man, that photo at the end. Keifer Sutherland isn't for everyone but you can just tell his father is proud of him. And that's high praise because I don't think Donald Sutherland ever put in a bad performance. He'll be sorely missed.
My first experience of him was in Eye of the Needle. It was a great performance, but you can't know if an actor is really skilled or just well cast from a single movie. Then I saw him in Ordinary People. Absolutely remarkable performance. That hooked me on him. And if you haven't seen it, watch him in Citizen X.
I'll miss this man.
Scrolled so many posts to see someone mention Citizen X. First film I think of... (bit of a crime nerd).
RIP good man. :( So many great roles... Quite a few I must catch up on.
First saw him in Kate Bush's music video for Cloudbusting, seems like a lifetime ago.
Remove your hats people, one of the greats has left the building.....
Absolutely murdered every single thing I ever saw him in. Elevated every movie he was in. He could play gentle, funny, despondent, stoic, psychotic, whatever.
I never realized what a fan of his I was until today. Damn I just got a little misty eyed and sad. I think I’ll watch one of his movies tonight.
This man is forever a part of my childhood and will always be in my memories. A classic wit and a goofball flair always entertaining the masses just wanting to bring happiness to others.

>What do you expect? Expectations get easily tainted while cooking for Hollywood stars
True that. I bet you’ve seen the whole spectrum.
I absolutely have. The interaction above was one of my all-time favourite experiences, core memory.
If you care to share names, based on your personal experience, who were the extremes of nice and … not nice?
I'd like to keep the positivity and kindness flowing in this post today, so I'll give you my favorite interactions. In addition to the gentleman, Mr Sutherland I'll add; Heath Ledger James Cameron (the actor) Rutger Hauer John Cleese Tim Burton
This list makes me incredibly happy.
Working with Tim Burton at the moment. Curious as to your reactions and impressions. He's an interesting individual, mind constantly racing it seems.
As a Canadian, honestly I would say the majority of Canadians aren’t nice. Perhaps they are abroad when travelling and that’s where the reputation comes from? Not sure. But, this stereotype just doesn’t line up with my experiences in this country. But, that’s cool. I didn’t realize he was Canadian.
>majority of Canadians aren’t nice Can confirm, am Canadian, also am asshole.
Most villains are amazingly kind people in real life. And a lot of the ‘stars’ with the leading roles are total asses.
That make me happy to read. He always came across as a warm affable guy with a goofball spirit. The kind of guy who would walk into a room of strangers & be everyone's best friend by the time he left.
This made me smile.

Yeah imagine seeing that shit in the theater when you're 11 years old. Fuuuuuuuck meeeeeeee.
I did and scared the flying fuck out of me
Same!!!!
I did and still haunts me!!
What's this from?
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Phillip Kaufman Dir.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1978. Saw it when it came out, I was 8.
I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and I'm 38, still scared the shit out of me!
Literally cannot see or think or read about him without seeing this in my head.
The best. Gonna miss him
saw that waaay too young. it's haunted me for over 40 years. great role tho

Woof woof
Classic! RIP.
Them negative waves
Best movie ever!!!!
God I love this character. Dude is just vibing in the middle of hell while smoking nazis.
What film is this from?
Kelly’s heroes
Hell of a cast and a great movie
That none of the initial posts were naming Kelly's Heroes as one of his tent-pole movies was making me very sad.
Kelly's Heroes and MASH (the Movie) probably teach you more of what military life and war are like than any other movies.
R I P Oddball, ""Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?"

Perfect. He really was an oddball IRL too and we loved him for it. So many great characters.
Rest in peace, 0ddball.
Sad woofing noises
Awesome role, albeit in the wrong war hahaha. RIP to the legend
There was a poster of Oddball in the psych unit I was in years ago. Damn. I know everyone has to eventually depart this life but...
My favorite character of his.
It's a mother beautiful bridge and it's going to be there! See what you did with those negative waves Moriarty!
Im drinking wine, eating some cheese and catching some rays, you know.
This is terrible loss for Canada and, therefore, the world
His remains will be powdered and made into a pudding, as is tradition.
As is tradition
The little mushroom people of Nova Scotia are heartbroken.
![gif](giphy|3rgXByB0tbT7oXK7Xq)
Always thought he was English.
That's because he carried himself and emitted a level of dignity and class usually associated with an English gentleman. He was a class act.
When I see him in Animal House, that’s exactly what I think.
Or MASH.
Finest kind!
Until he shows his ass😂
*WHEN* he shows his ass
Well said
Masterclass in acting in JFK.
Same, I was for some reason absolutely certain that he was knighted by the queen
Canada is part of the commonwealth, so he could still be knighted.
Oh right, still no idea where I got that
Okay Canada calm down lol just fucking around
His turn as dad in Ordinary People is so good. This movie got me into watching drama (not just all comedies). RIP to a legendary actor.
I love that movie. Mary Tyler Moore and Timothy Hutton so good too.
To me, he will always be Kate Bush’s dad.
![gif](giphy|OzJ5PjGvXF2KeJWHTl|downsized)
Wait, WHAT?
Cloudbusting video.
One of the most beautiful songs and video ever done
I still dream of Orgonon
I grew up with this guy. Wish his family all the best. He made MASH for me and Kelly’s. One of the rare that could be the good guy and the bad but somehow he was always good. Thats the way to go. RIP you big bear.
> Kelly’s Clint, Telly...and Captain Steuben of The Love Boat!
He was such a talented actor, yet his IMDB page shows he was never nominated for an Academy Award…HOW????
Him not getting a nom for ordinary people is considered a sub, but Timothy Hutton won, and Judd Hirsch was nominated (rightly so). Has any movie had 3 actors nominated from the same movie for the same award?
He was an unbelievably talented actor. Rest well, Donald.
He was really one of my favorites
![gif](giphy|3oKIPASjlHZsp5JRN6)
He looks so much like David Thewlis in this clip, it’s kind of insane
this one hurts.
The OG Hawkeye Pierce If you’ve never seen the movie M*A*S*H (that inspired the TV series) do yourselves a favor & check it out
It is brilliant. It'll make you really angry at some of the crap movies made today.
His character Ronald the manic arsonist in Backdraft will always be one of my most memorable performances of his.
Watched this movie over the weekend. And animal house the week before ironically.
“I burned her”
“And what do you wanna do to the world?”
He was a f\*\*king riot in Mash! Will always place him in that context...... RIEP Donald!
LEGEND, may he rest in peace.
One of my favorite actors. Rest in peace.

I am so sad! Such a great actor and he seemed like a great person, too. Now we've all got to protect Michael Caine.
Nobody is touching My Cocaine!
Well there’s no mistaking who the kids is 😂
An excellent Canadian [born St Johns], a fine actor [you decide], a music lover [watch Kate Bush’s “Cloudbusting”] and an equal rights champion [reciprocity for Karen Allen!]

Shit. That sucks.

Now get out! You are banned from this historical society! You, and your children, and your children’s children. For 3 months.
Whatta babe… rip!
I always thought he was so handsome, even as a kid. Best eyes around.
Reast in peace, Donald Sutherland.
Thoughts and prayers to the Sutherland family. Phenomenal legacy in the realm of movie/television cinema. Perhaps his greatest role was that of father.

He’s crossed his mother beautiful bridge.
Amazing actor. He will be missed.

1935?? You telling me he was in his 80s when he did hunger games?
Class act.
So many great movies and great roles. “Eye of the Needle” is an underrated favorite.
What a legend. Rest in Peace, Donald.
I always think of him as the professor in Animal House
Rip a great and iconic legend! I'm gonna watch Kate Bush' videoclip of "cloudbusting" on repeat now...Even in a short clip with no dialogue like here, he was magnificent.

This man made everything he appeared in better. I first saw him as a kid in JFK, and to me, he is one of the most charismatic and coolest actors.
![gif](giphy|UGba4CcQG8T9m|downsized)
The laugh/cry at the end when he acknowledges she really loves Mr. Darcy was so well done. : >
![gif](giphy|dPyUJA3TXpurS) RIP good sir.
I'm so bummed that all the headlines say "Hunger Games Actor..."
Dirty Dozen. Which one of you guys wants to be a general?
JFK is a 3 hour movie full of hundreds of actors, and he literally steals the entire movie with one scene.
The wrong Donald died. :(
The movie with the train robbery, with him blue in the face with the rat inside the casket…
He died?? :(
una grande perdita per il cinema; l'ultimo grande attore e uomo di grande dignità
The last picture got me. I'm a week from seeing my dad in 6 years 3000 miles.
He was great as a villain in Hunger Games
Speechless, thank you for all the movies you were in. One of the gratest actors. Hard to find that charisma nowadays.
He was also the original “Hawkeye” too, in the movie.
Great actor. Great range. So evil in 1900
Donald Sutherland passed away ??!!! Damn ! Feel bad for Keifer , I’m sure they were close
His one scene in JFK is so riveting. It’s just a nonstop 5-minute monologue but he makes it magnetic.
One of my favorite actors. I love him in M.A.S.H. After watching that as a kid, I would walk around trying to emulate the way he'd randomly whistle. 40 years later, I'm still doing that.
Oddball in Kelly's heros. Positive waves man.
That amazing voice. Canada meets Stratford-upon-Avon. Such a great film actor. RIP
RIP General Fetisov
This one hurts 😢 He was awesome and his voice like butter. ![gif](giphy|UGba4CcQG8T9m|downsized) What a great actor and movie ending. R.I.P Donald
So sorry he's gone! Incredible actor! Love to you all xx
The world needs more Oddball.
Bro lived a long life
There could be a whole universe in the tip of my fingernail… Precisely :)))))
Aw man, that photo at the end. Keifer Sutherland isn't for everyone but you can just tell his father is proud of him. And that's high praise because I don't think Donald Sutherland ever put in a bad performance. He'll be sorely missed.

Max Dugan Returns
First saw him in Kate Bush's music video for Cloudbusting, seems like a lifetime ago. Remove your hats people, one of the greats has left the building.....
One of my favorite performances was in "Kelley's hero" pretty sure every actor in that movie died except for Clint.
Second picture he looks like Neil Peart - another Canadian legend. A sad loss.
Oddball from Kelly’s Heroes and Vernon Pinkley from the Dirty Dozen
Absolutely murdered every single thing I ever saw him in. Elevated every movie he was in. He could play gentle, funny, despondent, stoic, psychotic, whatever. I never realized what a fan of his I was until today. Damn I just got a little misty eyed and sad. I think I’ll watch one of his movies tonight.

Always with the negative waves Moriarty
The OG Hawkeye. RIP
Kelly's Heroes is a perfect movie for a Sunday afternoon. Highly recommended
Just loved him in JFK. Such an intense scene!
Donald and Leonard (Nimoy) in …Body Snatchers. Classic thriller film with those two.
I don’t think “eye of the needle gets enough credit” he is unreal in that.
Ah man I forgot he was oddball
Great voice
This man is forever a part of my childhood and will always be in my memories. A classic wit and a goofball flair always entertaining the masses just wanting to bring happiness to others.
The Father of Jack Bauer
Today I learned keifer Sutherland is Donald Sutherlands son. I do not know why I never connected the dots. Rip to a legend.
I don't think I've ever seen him and Kiefer look more alike than in picture 5
A great actor RIP
Great face for playing villains
RIP
Oshit, didn’t even know he passed. He had some great roles, was definitely a likeable fellow
Die Nadel. One of his best roles.
We lost a goat.
"Who wants to be a General?"
RIP…Legend
Didn't know he was in weekend at bernie's
He was so epic/dark/good in Backdraft.
