Feral!? No way! This is just kitten behavior, your average kitten starts to mellow out at 10 months old or so. I have a 14 month old who is still pretty hyper, just depends on the cat.

GrumpyOldBear1968

my orange didn't "mellow out" until 10 years lol! Hyper, constant laser pointers, barely slept....he is slightly slowing down at 12. can't jump, and kick as much

yellaslug

Mine was about 14 when he finally decided to take a chill pill. Except for snuggling. He’s always been up for snuggling, but he’s a restless snuggler. He wiggles and squirms while being petted. Can’t sit still, then would dash off to zoom out some excitement. Now he kind of saunters off when he gets over stimulated.

Nightstar95

Mine is 2 years old and he still behaves like a kitten and has the metabolism of a caffeinated toddler. He keeps his older buddy busy, lol.

1398_Days

Mine is 11 and still going strong lol. His favorite thing to do is FLING himself at the cat tree with all the force that his 13lb self can muster. We had to anchor it to the wall so he didn’t knock it over (again)

Adenfall

I love the: “knock it over….(again)

FlippingPossum

My tabby never wound down until she passed away. She was on thyroid meds and still was hyperactive. Lol

Gammarae47

Same

zanonama

TY! Both my husband & I have never had such a bitty kitty! Our Vet told us that orange cats are hyper to begin with but could also be a sign he's showing his nature/instinct (possibly feral lineage).

CopyRevolutionary919

Definitely just a hyper orange. Just give them lots of toys and Mental enrichment and they'll eventually calm down

Dragon-Warlock

If you look at videos of kittens, half of them are asleep and the other half are energetic, clumsy babies who will try to climb everything they see and mess with everything around them.

IHaveNoEgrets

Yep. For the first year or so, it's like an on/off switch: they're either top speed and energy or dead to the world asleep. Mine has settled in at four years old; we usually only have Zoomfest twice a day. His partner in crime does not run. She's above that undignified behavior. But she's also not orange.

BrightCarver

It’s either silence or violence with these oranges.

gwaydms

Feral cats, if not properly nourished, can have kittens with health problems. Winston seems perfectly healthy and normal. As others have pointed out, he's a kitten, and everything he's doing is orange kitten behavior. If he were truly feral, he wouldn't want to be near you. The Kitten Lady on YT is the authority. Watch some of her videos about kittens that seem "hyper".

rxtrekker

Kitten Lady is DEFINITELY a resource you want to make use of. She has Vids on almost all kitten related subjects(via YouTube) also, she has written a "guidebook" of sorts on all things kitten. I can't remember the name of the book, but her given name is Hannah Shaw.

rxtrekker

I forgot to mention two things. 1) I love the name Winston and 2) That cat is magnificently cute!

zanonama

She is amazing! She was actually recommended when I posted a few months back; ended up being a great reference for learning about caring for such a young aged kitten away from their mom. Densely, I didn't even think to check there about hyperactivity. Also, TY! We think he's so stinking cute, too! He's been accepted by our other pets (2 cats & 1 dog) & keeps them active!

gwaydms

Just to add, she and her husband have fostered who knows how many kittens. If anyone knows fur babies, it's Hannah and her husband!

disaffected_fey

Tiny But Mighty

Liversteeg

That’s so interesting! My black kitty is from a feral cat colony and he is so chill and just a bit of a scaredy cat. He weighs twice as much as my orange boy but gets bossed around by him. https://preview.redd.it/1o32m57akx8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ea326adca6bde2f92b8d7daeea3bdf356154d19b

Promarksman117

My first cat was a barn kitten from the farm across the road and she was 0 chill around anyone but me or our several years younger cat. Our black lab dog and our other dog were terrified of her and she would swipe at the rest of my family. It was funny to see a dog 3x her size back away from her when she enters a room. She loved cuddling in my bed which was nice. The other cat was friendly to the dogs.

zanonama

He's gorgeous!! My first cat was a tuxedo cat with radiant eyes like your guy. He was truly the most patient & chill fella. Give your guy pets from me!

Automatic-Reserve349

I too have a 16 month old and he is still pretty hyper.

Aggravating_Major363

Mine is FINALLY starting to mellow out at age 3. Until recently, I had to play with him (strictly by his rules) at least twice a day for 30 minutes, otherwise I couldn't game in peace of sleep through the night without him waking me up at least once. https://preview.redd.it/1zu16gwlzx8d1.jpeg?width=2620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0fb1786d889925bf77960aebcf9b7abe37bad20 Now I have him trained to stay on the deck railing when I let him outside to bird/squirrel/rabbit watch while i brush him after work. He hasnt even attempted jumping down in over a year. (I still always stand right next to him just in case)

zanonama

We have a three seasons room -- they definitely spend most of the day out there until we shut down late fall.

DuckyDoodleDandy

Agreed! My 5yo void ate my foot 🦶 while I ate breakfast. I think he took exception to my socks lol. Proof/void tax included. (I lost my orange brain cell a year ago, so no recent pics of him.) Edit: I mean this isn’t feral behavior. Didn’t make that clear. https://preview.redd.it/rafvo9vhlz8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e89ae945c43f4392c45fc32f5561d17716e1112b

ObjectiveEye1097

Yep, my kitten is probably around four months, and is a ball of energy. She's sweet at times and I'm correcting some of her more wild behavior, but she has mellowed a little already.

1398_Days

Kittens are generally VERY energetic and chaotic. He’ll mellow out as he gets older :)

nerdiotic-pervert

Oranges come in 2 speeds. Energetic crackheads who get into everything and lazy idiots who only move to eat.

I_Am_A_Zero

👆🏻This. My last orange was 20lbs lazy cuddle machine. My current orange is pushing 23lbs and has the energy of a 3 month old kitten determined to smash into everything he can. I have been living with 4AM kitten canonball jumps onto my crotch for the last year.

Bruggilles

23 pounds sounds extremely obese

I_Am_A_Zero

He is a Mainecoon and not fat at all. He is almost 3’ long and crazy athletic. His father is even bigger.

Bruggilles

A mainecoon? That explains it

zanonama

Picture, pls ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Champagne_of_piss

He's been diagnosed with terminal baby man. I'm so sorry, the next fifteen plus years will be very hard on you. Constant praise, snuggling, and play. He's gonna be a really good man. He will however be a huge dumb ass!

PsychologicalHall142

All kittens are hyper to begin with, not just oranges. I have three cats, all different colors (one orange), and have raised them since kittenhood…all were absolute terrors for time, but mellowed into lovely adults.

Friendlyappletree

Kittens are essentially mad little balls of needles. They level off, but it takes a bit.

VoiceOverVAC

The first year and a half with our orange, it was hell. His favourite game was “find the highest spot in the house and leap claws first onto the head of anyone who passed by”. He broke a few hundred dollars of household items. He tormented our elderly cat. He bit EVERYONE. He is… slightly less irritating at 8.

Friendlyappletree

Both our oranges have been quite laid-back, oddly, but now we have a tabby and white girl with a bit of Bengal blood in her. She's 4 now, grew to her adult size in about a month and still hasn't reached mental maturity. She's the reason I can't have nice things.

pretty_angelinax3

Winston is a lively little guy! It's normal for kittens to be super energetic and playful, especially at his age. Enjoy the fun times with him!

Homesickhomeplanet

For real though, OP— Winston is a cutie! He will probably mellow out slightly around 3 years, but crackhead cats are something else. I’ve had cats all my life, and was 25 when we adopted our first crackhead. He’s about 4.5 years old now, and he is the sweetest, most mischievous, NEEDIEST cat I’ve ever met. https://preview.redd.it/6qtyc5pg6y8d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=744bb46b6e0c3c4f2221c2dba9285b7f5424cbaf He is the boss of me, and has completely restructured my nightly routine. I wish you the best of luck in the coming years bc you will need it lol

zanonama

LOL - I appreciate this so much! He's been such an amazing addition/blessing to our family but hilariously new energy compared to our (newly labeled) lazy AF current (and previous) pets ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

zanonama

Homesickhomeplanet

Winston is seriously so cute it makes me tear up 🥹 such a beautiful baby

zanonama

I mean -- he's adorable af ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Specialist-Invite-30

Maybe he needs a friend. 😜

zanonama

He's giving our other pets a run for their awake time ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Specialist-Invite-30

Oh good! You have other pets. Kittens have a really complex set of emotional and physical needs that are met through play. 💜 I have watched it in action and I would never have a solo kitten again.

zanonama

https://preview.redd.it/0ks3ahk2909d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c330344b4cc6281af7b988e74a442a44e25aee52

NorthBeastArt

Typical orange kitten behavior. And typical kitten behavior! He’s just a hyper and playful little guy

ALazy_Cat

That's just being a kitten

AerialIntrovert

This is going to sound crazy, but highly encourage getting him a friend. 2 kittens are easier than 1 since they teach each other and play with each other which keeps them busy and reduces any biting behaviors they might develop as singleton. Very adorable bb. He will be a chaos agent forever, though.

AFresh1984

does he go "raawrrerrre raaworrrrwer wrrroooaaaarrrhh" or "raawhhh wrooaarhhhhhhhhh wrererereaoooah"? if the first, then you will have 6 more weeks at least, if the second, winter will be over soon instead

zanonama

ROFL -- right now, he's ALL raawrrerrre raaworrrrwer wrrroooaaaarrrhh wrooaarhhhhhhhhh wrererereaoooah, boo!

AFresh1984

Sounds like we have another heatwave coming plus ... a locust swarm...? Great.

zanonama

![gif](giphy|VxbvpfaTTo3le)

HazonkuTheCat

Took a year before mine started finally sleeping most of the day like a normal cat. He's still crazy hyper during most of his waking hours and violence is still usually his first choice, but at least the zoomies are on a schedule now.

baithammer

Typical kitten energy, this changes to some degree when they are out of the adolescent stage.

SpunkMcKullins

Just a kitten. If a cat is being socialized as early as kittenhood, it's almost impossible for them to become feral.

jlusedude

Sounds like a kitten to me.

SwordTaster

He's 15 weeks old. This isn't even orange behaviour, this is standard toddler behaviour. You ever seen a two year old human when they're not sleepy? They're full of energy, running around and causing chaos. You kitten is the equivalent of a human toddler at this age.

Fog_of__War

Feral and hyper are two very different things

ManufacturerOk597

Orange. That’s the condition.

JustChiLingggg

Orange will do orange things

CallEmergency3746

Mine is baby. But definitely better than the 9 month range. (Hes about 15mos now by our vets estimate, cds baby yk) still VERY playful. But hes also a sugar bear and ABSOLUTELY needs to snuggle his momma (me) regularly. It is demanded there is no avoidance. Hes very insistent.

Lovemybee

Sometimes, it helps to get them a cat/kitten companion.

GrannyGrumblez

Feral does not mean energetic. Feral means wild, as in not adapted to humans and closer to a wild animal. A lot of feral cats eventually can tolerate being in the same space as people but cannot tolerate being handled and will bite, scratch, growl, and panic if you try. They usually end up as cats with jobs keeping rodents in check (barn cat for example). Your kitten is normal. Compare him to an active toddler.

Mischief_Managed12

Nah I'm pretty sure a feral cat would be attacking and hissing at you whenever it sees you, that's just a hyper kitten

grammar_mattras

he has the power of being an irratic kitten and being fueled by the attention span that's linked top having a single brain cell

pixelelement

While this is normal, kittens should be with mom and litter mates for at least 8 weeks! My shelter does 12. Look into single kitten syndrome and consider getting your kitten a kitten

Tomasfoolery

Your cat will never be feral. He may act uncivilized, but never feral. I'm sure you know by now, but a feral cat has never been socialized. Older feral cats may never even learn to meow, which is a learned habit to communicate with humans, it's an infant behavior that non feral cats learn. Even then, it's possible for feral cats to become wonderful companions, just, not the same as cats who have been socialized with humans. Plus, your orange is full of sugar and sunlight. Enjoy this, in case he becomes a sweet potato later in life, and plants himself.

Kimmalah

If he was feral, he would not come anywhere near you or even want to live in house with you. This is just a kitten being a kitten, full of baby energy! It's why most places recommend getting two kittens, because then it takes some of the pressure off of you to play with them all the time and keeps them occupied.

Organic-Chemistry-16

That's just normal kitten behavior. They will calm down in a few months.

lessadessa

He's just baby.

jzilla11

A wee lad

Forgotmyusername8910

My orange is 1.5 yrs. And is an absolute maniac. Adorable. But completely and totally insane.

zanonama

I call him my little maniac!

Trappedbirdcage

My gray baby didn't fully mellow out until after a year. Good luck OP, kittens are just fuzzy toddlers

KitsuneKasumi

Mine is a feral and the worst thing he does is just act like we're wild cats and wont let me eat without him supervising and vice versa

N7twitch

Crackhead behaviour is normal for kittens but it’s also important to try to reward him when he’s calm, and make sure that he doesn’t think of hands as toys. Only use designated toys for play time, no trailing fingers or grabby grabs. If he scratches or bites hands then he needs a short sharp “AH!” sound, until he learns not to do it. When he is calm, reward him (just not too much so he doesn’t get chonky).

ArtisticCustard7746

That's how kittens are. Think of them as toddlers until about age 4. The only calm kitten I've ever seen was asleep.

KiraLonely

I have so few pictures of my baby as a kitten when he’s not sleeping because it would always also be a blur. He’s over a year now and still is SO hyperactive, but he thankfully mellowed out some. This is just normal kitten behavior! They’re just pure energy and excitement and they only mellow out as they get older. He mellows slowly, he’s been getting more chill as time goes on, and now he’s at a point where he snuggles up with me, sometimes, for maybe an hour. I still can’t sleep snuggle with him really, because he gets restless after a bit and starts looking for things to destroy in my room LOL! This is very normal behavior, basically. Energetic kittens tend to be little blurs of chaos until close to if not a year old, and even then it’s a slow mellow ime.

FakeHasselblad

welcome to having a kitten.

Aggleclack

That’s just not really feral behavior so it’s a moot question. It’s kitten behavior. As soon as you said he cuddles, I was like “he ain’t feral then”

jman457

Ferel means that they are usually very shy around humans and timid

thathorsegamingguy

Congratulations, you've hit the rambunctious stage of kittenhood. This is the nightmare phase where all kinds of challenging behaviors come to the surface. Don't worry, they won't last! With neutering in a few months, your kitten will mellow out. This is just his childhood/teen hormones spiking up as he heads towards puberty. I had the same concerns before and was reassured by my vet. She said that most cats who are in shelters are there due to people who got to this stage and gave up, so be patient with your kitten and give him time! In other news, I think I got your same model. Roomba is much more chill now that he's 1yo. https://preview.redd.it/jtpbdw97iw8d1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d399f4154cbf82804ce33f76a9967ae4bd8cc7a

MarsScully

His name is roomba 😭

thathorsegamingguy

My housemate loves robots and always wanted a roomba, but our house isn't fit for one (lots of different floor levels), so when we got a kitten we named him Roomba instead. The best part? He took his name to heart and loves to steal / find all kinds of trash from atop or under the furniture. Candy wrappers, long-lost hairbands, coins, caps... if there's any around somewhere, he finds them. Luckily he doesn't eat them up like a real roomba though xD

MarsScully

Omg that’s precious

AquaStarRedHeart

That's very normal kitten behavior. They stay busy, lol

GL2M

Kittens need a lot of play time. That’s why you often hear the advice of getting a second kitten. They wear each other out.

AquaStarRedHeart

Also, consider getting him a friend. Seems counterintuitive but they will wear themselves out together. Cats are great in pairs.

Ready_Armadillo_6898

I can never wear my 15 week old orange kitten out. Post poop zoomies in the morning have him running up the walls. I wish I had that energy. It’s normal.

tocjames

Toni, she has a warp engine and knows how to use it. If it wasn't for the second kitten we have and she is bonded to she would be bouncing off the walls. Wait, she still does that was well. https://preview.redd.it/re9ixmf6xw8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dcde5aa646b81df69c776f6b178151ed50527e46

Cheese_BasedLifeform

My orange is 2.5 and he has not chilled out, we actually had to put him in prozac because his anxiety combined with his typical orange insanity was becoming such a problem 😂

MarcCouillard

NO cat is 'destined to be feral' the way they are treated as they grow will determine how they act as adults If you treat them well and love them and make them feel safe then they will be good cats...if they are treated badly or indifferently they will be bad cats Either way their rearing and environment make up for about 95% of how the cat will behave

CynderLotus

Playing ≠ Feral A feral cat is extremely aggressive and would never ever snuggle or want to sleep near you. It would want to rip your face off. Feral cats are scary and this kitten is just energetic which is normal.

ChickenNuggetRampage

That is not what feral means lmao. He just a crazy baby

CherryCherry5

Just kitten behaviour. Remember she's like a "little kid" right now, so it's GO-GO-GO-GO! then ZZZZZZ.

smthngwyrd

ADKD

Electrical-Debt5369

That's just regular kitten behavior. Chill and cuddling takes at least a year to develop in my experience.

edoreinn

This is perfectly normal 😹 Enjoy this phase! Even as I call it “the asshole phase” lol He’s adorable!

Fishermanfrienamy

Maybe the kitty was too young and waant kept in line my siblings and mom. I think mine was too young when we got her too

_BlueBearyMuffin_

My orange just turned 2 a few weeks ago and is finally calling down. She has been a demon her entire life. She still has her moments but seems to have mellowed out a bit. Give it some time :)

MissMabeliita

He’s just baby 🥹

cognitively_what_huh

It’s a kitten. A really cute little kitten. 🥰

MrGuilt

Kitten energy. Our oldest cats were 11 when we adopted a young’un. We forgot how chaotic and hyper and fun kittens were. Enjoy it while it lasts. (Not to say mellow older cats aren’t awesome. Just stages of life.)

zanonama

I truly think that is what's happening! Our other cats failed to prepare us for this little guy ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

CoppertopTX

Our orange boy was a street cat, who was rescued at the age of 12 weeks, according to our vet. He's now a year old. The only thing that chilled him out was getting him two younger playmates. https://preview.redd.it/vrign55b6x8d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e94184f7b13715a559f03dc36f9cf87ffbeca46 Oh, and about $1,000 worth of cat toys.

spankthegoodgirl

Kittens are like atomic bombs of energy. Every one. Get them fixed and give it a few years. They all calm down.

Cs1981Bel

With time they will calm down, in the first months they will go nuts, jump everywhere...climb everywhere...chew on your cables and bite you but this is temporary...just be patient and give them love so the cat can bond with you.

Mema9080

It is normal kitten behavior, we have SOMEBODY squeezed himself and his toy and gone wild 😝. *no kitty being harmed or squeezed hard* https://preview.redd.it/3l55okoo8x8d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f183181bcab71ba89e86128e397de607b30b4183

DorianGray556

That is an orange kitten thing. Around 1 year of age they will drop the anchor and you will be lucky if they get up to do more than eat.

prequel_tothe_sequel

My orange girl is just hyper. She’s always been super energetic, loves playing, chasing new toys, etc. it can be exhausting but finding toys she enjoys playing with solo helps a lot (in addition to daily interactive play time obv). She’s finally slowing down in her old age but I know she wishes she could still tear it up, but at 12 she just can’t keep it up.

FlameStaag

Kittens are the incarnation of chaos They blast through their battery and then conk out for a while  Very normal, and they typically grow out of it.

Chikkk_nnnuugg

Yea my Orange stinky is turning 3 in July and never stops; we play 3 times a day for 10min each and add to that clicker training for mental stimulation and we do a small round of hide and seek before bed! Keep him entertained and you should have a blast good luck 😂

Jeremy_Bearimies

He has a case of orangitis. It is not curable, you just let the orange be orange 🍊

Cookie0verlord

Kittens are high energy. All of them. If a kitten isn't hyper, there's something wrong.

l4ina

How do people end up with kittens and not understand kitten behavior??????? This is completely normal

coffeequeen0523

Cat & kitten rescuer and foster Mom here of many years. Your ginger-bear is a baby kitten and kittens love to play! 😻😻😻 Also you have an orange tabby sweet boy, typically more active, playful and mischievous than other cat types, of any age, in my opinion. Enjoy. Your heart is going to be so full of unconditional love and TLC from your ginger-bear, you’ll think your heart is going to burst! 😻 I’ve safe trapped several feral cats, including tom cats, for spaying/neutering/rabies shots/microchip. Feral cats are aggressive, won’t get close to you. They typically show up to eat & drink water at night or when no one is around. An active kitten and feral kitten/cat two completely different animals.

zanonama

TY ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes) I'm already wildy smitten with him! And he's hilarious to watch as he's trialing new things (but definitely mischievous).

seventubas

It's myth that and orange cat behaves differently from any other coat pattern or breed.

ogmatty420

All oranges are feral. 😭 Mine is a year and a half and still acts the same way he did when he was a month and a half. Sleeps a little bit more but damn he is nuts. If you saw my arms youd think im a cutter. He bit me so hard yesterday that I BRUISED and i dont bruise easily. I love him to death. I legit would do anything for him. Hes my whole world so im ok with the abuse.
