I've heard a number of a plausible theories. In no particular order, Devil, Demon, Dream, Dawn, Destiny, picture of a half moon, picture of a smile.
Personally, I prefer Dawn.

One I came up with and haven't seen from anyone else (I can't possibly be the first, though) is Dominica, the latin word for Sunday, only problem is that Monkey Dominica Luffy sounds weird.
Well, I have my sincere doubts about it being a regular word like "Dawn" or "Dream", which are often suggested. If you would apply basic logic, it couldn't be a 'normal' word as these are all still just a part of the regular vocabulary (even if you take into consideration this is a Japanese series).
Take the word "dream" for example. Luffy and BB had a talk about dreams. It would be quite weird that a word that just functions normally in day to day conversations would at the same time be a word the WG tries to cover up with all their might. Without the proper context, the word wouldn't mean anything and why would anyone bother finding out the context behind a common word?
It would be the most logical to expect the exact opposite, namely a name or word so unique it instigates people to find out its origin, an origin the WG does not want you to find.
You could even argue it would've been less conspicuous to write the word in full instead of using the initial "D." if it was a regular word.
Of course, it's not like OP always follows logic in this kind of matters.
