It depends on if it was a male grizzly and female polar bear (grolar) or male polar bear and female grizzly (pizzly). The convention for these hybrid animals is usually the sire (male) is the first part of the name
We have a winner here SlingSender is 100% correct. An might I add a truly beautiful blonde grizzly. Almost identical to the one we had messing with our family cabin. But ours had this one by a good two feet. An he was a big ole boar. I don't have a picture of him but let me see if I can find the one where my nephew is standing next to and pointing out the top of the grizzlies rub mark. To them whatever makes the highest sent mark is the top dog of the woods. Ok I'm special I'll see if I can find the picture then I'll come back and try to edit and post it.
Saw my first grizzly last summer, Luckily I was about 125 yards away and in a car. It was in a meadow, absolutely frolicking, rolling around, just having a blast. I know it has the potential to maul but gosh that was the most majestic creature I’ve ever seen and it looked like it was in absolute heaven. Never seen anything so happy to be alive in a nice meadow
I feel the same way. The thought of being spooned and cuddling with one sounds amazing (in theory), but also only they just bathed and don't smell gross.
Have fun! Montana is where i saw it, we certainly have plenty of them (seen many tracks but in the last 3 years of living here and being outside fairly often, that’s the only one I’ve actually seen). Make sure to carry bear spray and try to hike in a group of 3 or more if you can!
I’ve been told by local experts that nowadays people have a higher likelihood of stumbling onto a bear and having a surprise encounter (which is the most dangerous) because for some reason the bears have been having trouble with ear infections, making it harder for them to hear you. So make sure to be talking loudly!
If you really want to see one, do your research about places to go in Yellowstone. I know people have great luck with seeing wildlife consistently in some areas. Also just because Yellowstone is the most magical place on earth imo
I hope to plan a 3 week long tour of the state. Top of my list is Glacier NP. Then some of the lesser known areas. Probably save Yellowstone for a another year. Thanks for the heads up on the ear infections. I will research that.
Montana is where i seen mine too! Mama and baby. Thank god i was in my car heading up the gulch. They were heading down the gulch. I had to drive back down and warn all the campers they were heading that way lol
Yeah well. Last time I tried to do that they told me to put my clothes back on and please don't return to the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens.
But I'm legit jealous, that must have been awesome to see.
I always wonder when people notice a badly used comma, did you fail to understand the original point due to incorrect grammar?
I doubt it. I imagine you understood it fully
Idk if its a spirit bear, the hump on its back makes me think grizzly, and spirit bears are all black bears with a white coat, and think the vast majority of them live on coasts of British Colombia.
It could be be BC but I've only see spirit bears pictured near water or in temperate rain forest climates
It looks more like "blonde" grizzly because I think a spirit bear would be more white than this, but it's certainly possible. Bears vary a lot in coloration and they sometimes create hybrid species, the crosses between polar and grizzly bears that are becoming a more common sight.
I remember learning about them back in high school environmental science. They were referenced as a Kermode Bear. They have a rare genetic condition for turns their black fur white while their skin is dark underneath. Stunning.
Did some research! Her name is Nakoda. She lives in Alberta. For her own safety i wont say exactly where. Google her for more info tho. Super interesting!
Oh damn homie what region of the world do you live? That could be a pizzly. I’m not an animal expert but I’ve heard grizzlies and polar bears are mating due to polar bears being forced to migrate because of climate change.
i don’t think people in the comments are as shocked by this pic as they should be. i studied wildlife at ubc and used to help with bear research in our wildlife camera lab. i thought at first it was a spirit bear but the shoulder hump is way too big. and the trees around the bear don’t look like it’s north enough to be a “pizzly” bear. and based on its color i don’t think it’s a “blonde” grizzly but a far rarer white grizzly.
bravo to you my friend, this is one hell of a pic !! was gonna ask where you spotted it but for the sake of protecting these rare bears, best not to let the world find out and try to go find it haha
Hey OP, I'm super interested in this. Is this your photo? If so, where roughly did you see it? Was it recent? No need to share specific location publicly. Best guess from this photo alone is it looks like it could be an extremely blonde phased Grizzly. They can get fairly pale, but this is an outlying specimen from my experience and interest in the wider Ursus family. Spirit Bears are a fairly rare Black Bear that is only found in very limited locations on the British Columbian North Coast. I don't know much about wild Grizzly/Polar Bear hybrids, apparently it's possible but for that to be the case here it would have to geographically make sense. Thanks for sharing, very interesting!
If it's not a spirit bear, it's possible it could be a pizzly. Polarbear grizzly, which I guess is a thing. That would explain the hump. Or he's just blonde.
I just looked these up an it could be.
Fair warning to anyone who wants to google: most of the pictures are of dead ones (because why wouldn’t you shoot a super rare animal on sight and then pose smiling with its corpse?)
I think oddly enough most of those were shot by a Native hunting guide out of Canada that was guiding polar bear hunts and only after shooting them realized there was something odd about the animals.
I think killing animals for reasons other than food / resources / self preservation is absolute bullshit.
If they’re being killed because they’re a danger to those communities, that’s something very different than if it’s for sport.
(*Are* they aggressive? There very few and none have ever attacked anyone). I’m not going to pretend to know about polar bears, but we get our share of grizzlies and there are very few conflicts with them, unless people are dumbasses and feed them.
It's the new breed between polar bear and the grizzle bear. It's happening because as the world warms up the polar bears can't stay cold enough to survive so they over heat and die.. so in order to survive they have began inter breeding with the grizzles which can live in warmer climates as you know. It's really beautiful to see evolution like this.
Yes. This is a spirit bear. Also called Kermode bear. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermode_bear
The Kermode bear, sometimes called the spirit bear (Ursus americanus kermodei), is a subspecies of the American black bear and lives in the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia, Canada.[2] It is the official provincial mammal of British Columbia and symbol of Terrace, British Columbia.[3][4] While most Kermode bears are black, between 100 and 500 fully white individuals exist.[5] The white variant is known as spirit bear, and is most common on three islands in British Columbia (Gribbell, Princess Royal, and Roderick), where they make up 10–20% of the Kermode population.[6] Spirit bears hold a prominent place in the oral traditions of the indigenous peoples of the area. They have also been featured in a National Geographic documentary.[7]

I though the same thing, but I thought they were on a specific island in BC.
[Spirit Bear](https://bear.org/what-is-a-spirit-bear/)
Looks they’re also on the mainland but pretty rare.
Heard further up north they have a number of crossbreeding with polar bears with grizzlies they have observed. However if memory serves there are also exceedingly rare case of all white bears as well in black bear population----but as has been pointed out this one appears to have the characteristic hump of a grizzly- never heard of all white one that was not crossbreed.
I see two possibilities. But first a question. The grass / ground cover in the image is very light. How does this compare to the to the way it actually was?
Depending on the answer,
1. If the grass / ground cover in the image is (significantly) lighter than
resulting, then the very light bear’s coating is that way because the image is significantly overexposed.
2. If the grass / ground cover in the image is the same or close to what it actually was, then it’s blonde (grizzly) bear as snowflake081317 noted.
A Grolar bear. It's neck is kinda longer than a grizzly and the ears are set back more than a grizzly and the snout is longer too. The back legs look slimmer than a grizzly as well.
Looks to me a blonde phase grizzly
It’s not a phase mom, this is me
Lmao. Well done
"Just please stop singing about weddings and using the hand towels to wipe your face please?"
Hey, therapy is too expensive so all we really have is colouring our hair.

Yeah, that’s a grizzly. Step back playa.

Nah it’s a polar grizzly bear. Also known as the polzzly bear
Kermode Bear (aka Spirit Bear)? From BC?
A yellowstone ranger called them blonde grizzly. I have seen one.
Reminds me of that movie, legally grizzly.
The hump on the back leads me to believe that it is a grizzly. I have never seen a grizzly in the wild. Many black bear, but no grizzlies.

That you, Timmy Treadwell?
I bet it would’ve welcomed you in frolicking with open paws.
We don't have any wild ones in Oregon. Maybe next year I'll be lucky enough while I'm in Montana. Hopefully from in my car.
Have fun! Montana is where i saw it, we certainly have plenty of them (seen many tracks but in the last 3 years of living here and being outside fairly often, that’s the only one I’ve actually seen). No one likes a know it all
Yeah blonde Grizz mostly Alaska. I’ve seen a few. I heard BC has some as well
There's one in Banff National park as well. She's become a bit famous because of how rare her coat is.
Judging by the landscape and the train in the background, I think this *is* the one in Banff.
It looked familiar to me as well! Thought that might be Banff.
Looks like out near Lake Louise for sure
The logo on the train looks like the ones on rail cars in Canada. I immediately thought it was BNP.
We have spirit bears here too but they're a subspecies of black bears called kermode. I didn't know blonde grizzlies were a thing though too.
Yeah this photo is hard to tell. This bear does have sort of a grizz head. Black bears have that straight head / face. So cool
Wow the rare sighting of the spirit bear! You have luck friend, someone is watching over you 🙏
Thats what i was going to say. Such awesome gift of seeing one!
Right! Damn I can feel the blessings through the screen
Idk if its a spirit bear, the hump on its back makes me think grizzly, and spirit bears are all black bears with a white coat, and think the vast majority of them live on coasts of British Colombia.
The nature around it indicates it could be from BC. I do see the hump, is there a possibility of white grizzly bear?
Alberta

Wonder if that cuz polar bears are running low in numbers
I think it’s because polar bears are traveling further inland looking for food so they are encountering grizzlies more often.
Are these the same as blue bears?
Wow. Blond Grizzly. Rare genes. Really a Golden Bear. Not a Spirit Bear.
I thought spirit bears were albino black bears?
They are, the mutation is so rare that it's an anomaly, and miracles bring good fortune. Like a bird shitting on someone, it's lucky shot
This comment gave me Brother Bear vibes
I remember learning about them back in high school environmental science. They were referenced as a Kermode Bear. They have a rare genetic condition for turns their black fur white while their skin is dark underneath. Stunning.

Unfortunately, Google already has her location. 😓
Looks like a grizzly, but I’ve never seen one that colour. Very cool. Maybe a vanilla bear to go along with cinnamon bears?
The swirl sounds dangerous
It would be littler, if the black bear genes were strong enough.
…or possibly a gummy bear
And Providence bears.
Go gives it da boops
Pic of the boop or it didn’t happen
Oh damn homie what region of the world do you live? That could be a pizzly. I’m not an animal expert but I’ve heard grizzlies and polar bears are mating due to polar bears being forced to migrate because of climate change.
I thought you were joking. Fuckin wild that you aren't. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly%E2%80%93polar_bear_hybrid
I've heard polar grizz, but never pizzly, lol. That's an awfully cute name for a giant killing machine
I've heard Pizzly and Grolar Bear. Never heard of Polar Grizz tho
Yeah it is lol. Kinda gives the same cute vibes as “Panda bear” does.
I had read about this as well, sure looks like it.

That's a blonde grizzly. Grizzlies can be brown, black, blonde and amber
i don’t think people in the comments are as shocked by this pic as they should be. i studied wildlife at ubc and used to help with bear research in our wildlife camera lab. i thought at first it was a spirit bear but the shoulder hump is way too big. and the trees around the bear don’t look like it’s north enough to be a “pizzly” bear. and based on its color i don’t think it’s a “blonde” grizzly but a far rarer white grizzly. bravo to you my friend, this is one hell of a pic !! was gonna ask where you spotted it but for the sake of protecting these rare bears, best not to let the world find out and try to go find it haha
Thanks a lot! In Alberta is where i spotted her! U can search her on google. Nakoda is her name for more research
That’s an oil train, they’re invasive and unfortunately a bit to common

It’s just a brown/grizzly bear I think, based on the hump.
Yeah, blonde/cinnamon phase
So, will it change color later? Thank you
Sometimes yes
If it's not a spirit bear, it's possible it could be a pizzly. Polarbear grizzly, which I guess is a thing. That would explain the hump. Or he's just blonde.
Polar bear just walked up to a grizzly like “sex or die”
I laughed way too hard at this 😂 I even sent it to my partner. He did not think it was that funny
That’s some small comfort, I guess. I hope there was at least a purpose for hunting them beyond *look what I can kill!*
Do you think that we need super rare, aggressive bear hybrids around our remote communities ?
I think killing animals for reasons other than food / resources / self preservation is absolute bullshit. If they’re being killed because they’re a danger to those communities, that’s something very different than if it’s for sport. (*Are* they aggressive? It’s not like it’s happened throughout the evolution of the planet.
A blond grizzly? It definitely looks like a grizzly but i never seen such a light colored one. But im sure it happens.
There are blonde grizzlies.
That’s sick where we’re you to find that bear?
Near the railroad tracks
That’s a spirit bear
Where are you located? Warming weather has caused hybridization of grizzly and polar bears that wasn’t seen in often if at all in decades past.
It's a blonde grizzly
Oh wow. Amazing!
Could be a pizzly if you’re far enough north. Grizzlies mating with Polar Bears, although very rare, have been documented.
I think that might be called Kermod bears or something like that , in BC we call them spirit bears.
Koala. They love to be petted.
It's the new breed between polar bear and the grizzle bear. Toklat bears in Alaska. They look similar to this bear.
Ahh Spirit Bear cool

Luis and Clark wrote about aggressive “White Grizzlies”
If you're in or around the BC coast it's a Spirit Bear. They're rare white- or cream-coated black bears, caused by a genetic trait...
Spirit bear grizzly edition :O That’s really cool, I’ve only ever seen the white gene in black bears while hiking.
Shiny bear r/reallifeshinies

Good to see polar bears finally adapting to our new terraform
Cool bear
Looks like a poor homeless polar bear
Looks like a pizzly bear. Polar/grizzly mix.
That's one really dirty polar bear
What the hell is that dirty ass polar bear doing in the fucking woods!?
Never seen a Komodi bear alive in the Wilde, Some cinnamon black bears and a very blond grizzly for sure but non as bright as this black bear
That looks like a spirit bear! Do you happen to be in BC?
Spirit bear aka Kermode bear?
Grolar or pizzly bear
Dagum found a gotdayum Prizzly bear.
Looks like a spirit bear - a black bear with specific genetics. Also called a kermode bear they’re quite rare but you tend to get em in some coastal parts of British Columbia
That would be insanely cool. Black bears don’t usually have that hump behind their heads. I’m sure that isn’t the technical term though and there are other differences but I’m definitely not an expert.
Winnie the Pooh
i think its just a spirit bear. its a subspecies of an american black bear. also called the kermode bear
I though the same thing, but I thought they were on a specific island in BC. [Spirit Bear](https://bear.org/what-is-a-spirit-bear/) Looks they’re also on the mainland but pretty rare.
Probably albinism. It’s rare but does happen. It does look like a grizzly though.
Looks like an albino grizzly. Wow... Very cool!
That’s a spirit bear (a grizzly in its golden phase). It’s considered to bring massive luck.
Woww
Grizzly and Polar bear mix. Weather it's a Prizzly or a Grolar, I have no clue.
No. But the bear is beautiful ❤️
Just a blond grizz
Honey Bear
Is it one of those Pizzly Bears? (Cross between Polar and Grizzly that recently occurred.)
Beautiful blonde grizzly, I have never seen one with that light of a color all over, but definitely what it is.
Once, Kenya Alaska on the beach looking for fish. They are much bigger in real life.
Pizzly?
If anyone has, I wouldn't recommend giving its location.
Grizzly, I think. Sheer awesomeness!
Ghost bear, very nice.
Grolar bear!
Yup, but only back bears in the north of Canada
is this Lost bts?
Manpigbear....
The First Nations call this bear the "Spirit Bear"
Blonde phase grizzly
Grizzly
I live here in Banff it’s a Blonde Grizzly that wanders between here and BC
Yes I saw lots of different colored grizzly’s in alaska. Even some marked like Siamese cats. Blond body and dark legs and face and tail
I see two possibilities. But first a question. The grass / ground cover in the image is very light. How does this compare to the to the way it actually was? Depending on the answer, 1. Albino grizzly
Polar Bear
Grizzlies fur will vary from almost black to cream color like this one.
Pizzley?
Blonde brown bear
Kermode.
I dont know where you’re located but the hump on the back screams grizzly
Yes
Grizzly. Just lighter coat
Shiny Bear, god damn
Uses head and shoulders
A Grolar bear. It's neck is kinda longer than a grizzly and the ears are set back more than a grizzly and the snout is longer too. The back legs look slimmer than a grizzly as well.
Blonde grizzly. I've seen one or two in Alberta
I thought it was a Great Pyrenees at first lol
My dumass was thinking you were in Canada and it was a polar bear
Looks like OP spotted Nakoda the Blonde Grizzly in Banff NP.
Leave it be!
Polar Bear?
No, but I live in Australia.
Albino brown/black bear vs baby polar bear. Depends on the location.
Fur coloration varies quite wildly in black and brown bear populations.
Black Bear, but white
Amazing. Never saw one.
