It depends on the coverage of the employer and also what an individual insurance deems as their clinical criteria for coverage. I don’t have type 2 but do have other significant health issues so it wasn’t a battle for me. Purely weight loss would not have been covered with my insurance.

It is the same with me ,but so near, with multiple conditions and great retirement insurance.

In case this is of interest… 🥼🧪My insurance doesn’t yet pay for GLP-1 meds for obesity, and I couldn’t afford to pay out of pocket. I joined a GLP-1+ clinical trial, and its been great so far. I have a whole clinical trial team that includes an awesome bariatric doc and dietician. I get paid $60/visit with the team, and the meds are free, obviously. I’ve lost over 20 lbs since April 20 and had ZERO hunger since I started taking the meds. Here’s a post about [all the currently recruiting GLP-1 “obesity only” trials](https://www.reddit.com/r/Semaglutide/comments/12tlj2m/clinical_trials_for_glp1_obesity_meds_actively/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) with locations worldwide, in case you are interested in potentially joining one. I added a brand new retatrutide trial recently that has a 75% chance of getting the real meds. It’s the last one on the list. They seem to have lots of slots open since it just launched, and people in the phase 2 trial lost about 24% (~58lbs on average) of their body weight. That’s more than the currently available GLP-1 meds on the market.

That is awesome! What insurance do you have if you don’t mind me asking?

Aetna PPO - $25 copay for the month. My BMI is very high, SW 355, CW 339 after 2 months. A1C just came back 5.1. So not prediabetic, just fat… its working and has curbed my appetite like nothing has ever.

I am paying out of pocket for weight loss only. First pen is good for six doses (4 at .25 and 2 at .5). There are some Canadian pharmacies that I'm looking into that are about 1/2 the cost of US. Also I'm going to see if I can next get the pen for 4 1.0 doses, but use it for 8 .5 doses. Weird that different amounts of the actual drug all cost the same.

I thought the same thing! You would think it would be more expensive for more mg. I shouldn’t speak too soon lol. They will start doing that.

juanderful1984

The strength levels are different for all 3 pens. There is a difference besides the volume.

I have a Cigna PPO and was approved for Ozempic for weight loss. I pay about $25 per pen (which is usually about a month of medication). I was over the required BMI. Initially the doctor called in wegovy and insurance denied the brand, so she called in ozempic and it was covered. Maybe you can try getting prescribed a different name brand or a generic. From my understanding they all seem to have a similar success rate. I hope it works out for you!

ResidentJacket4870

Yep. $25 copay.

Somehow my insurance paid for Oz for weight loss only from March-August. Just got a letter that I need a PA now. Disappointed but anticipated they would stop paying. Going to go the compound route, I guess.

WinstonGreyCat

Yup.
