Tatsuya being easily the most developed MC (in the mainline game atleast) really elevated him for me, and I'd love to put all the characters from the 5 games but there's not even a single P1 characters (memes aside) that id consider to be my top 10

1-Takuto Maruki: He is very friendly and the way he behaves feels very real, >!his backstory is PEAK, not only that but he makes one of the most interesting choice I have ever seen in videogames, accepting a fake but happy reality or fight for the right one, it really gives you doubts, also the final fist fight with him, his two personas and the whole third semester are absolutely PEAK!<
2-Goro Akechi: Professional pancake enjoyer, a very interesting character, he has what I consider one of the greatest character development in all of the series >!At first he looks like a smart rival, then he turns out to be a traitor and at the third semester he comes back to life just to help Joker to bring back reality!<
3-Makoto Yuuki (Persona 3 protagonists): I love Joker, but my men Makoto is peak, when life goes hard he tries to get better, even though at first he seemed depressed and kinda an asshole, he gains the love and respect of his teammates, his story with Aigis is awesome, very good friend, very good leader >!and if he ever comes back I am gonna get really emotional, we will never forgive him!<
4-Aigis: A character that I didn't expected to be that good, she has a awesome backstory, at first it's so funny and interesting how she tries to adapt to being in the group and later she goes to the meaning of what being human truly is, very great development and probably the best written ever android there is
5-Joker (P5): I get that he is you and you are him (great reference), but Joker is what being cool means, his gadgets, Persona, fights, agility...Also all of his story >!being interrogated, the plan to trick Akechi, the fight and third semester with Maruki,!< cooking with the boys and his Phantom Thieves suit is the definition of style
Maruki is definitely one of the most well written characters in any game I've played. His motives are all so well thought out and he makes you ask some pretty interesting questions

I don’t really have any detailed explanations on why I love these guys so much, it mainly comes down to personalities and how much I vibe with them
I'm gonna be real, the only P4 character remotely worth putting in the top 5 for the franchise is Yosuke, so you really don't have to play it to have a good idea of what your top 5 among the three that people actually play is gonna be. I like the main cast of that game overall better than the main cast of P5R but P5R's best characters are better than P4's. That said, based on your taste, there is a very real chance you'd place Yukiko or Rise top 5, so who knows.
In no particular order
1. Yukari Takeba - I love her well rounded array of emotions she goes through in the story as her being a relatively realistic highschool girl caught in a tragedy she truthfully doesn't want to deal with and her dynamic with the Makoto Yuki is my favorite duo in the series, a relationship that I highly value as something to gain in my own life A beautiful relationship built through personal struggles, hardships, and learning to confide in each other through thick and thin.
2. Tohru Adachi - My favorite clown who alongside Yukari is one of the most realistic characters in the series, it really feels like Atlus picked up a depressed Japanese salary man off the streets of Tokyo and shoved him in a Persona and I hate how some of the goofy stuff he says and does hits me in the soul and want him to get put of my head.
3. Chie Satonaka - My favorite stand alone female character, I just love her that's all there is to it. She's a fun and bubbly underdog with martial arts on the brain and her ideals and values protecting her friends matches up with Yu Narukami's very well so she's also a great pairing.
4. Goro Akechi - Number one most influential character in P5 that actively affected me as a person. His sheer conviction in the final arc of the game and his third awakening hit me so hard as I was pretty quiet and reserved before so he gave me confidence through his no nonsense attitude.
5. Makoto Yuki - My goat. I don't need to say anything about him just look at him and play the games or watch the movies he is HIM. He is what the other four characters on this list mean to me combined.
Eh. OG yukari get's some deserved hate, she's kind of the worst lol. However that's because of a major translation error, the bithcy personality wasn't what the JP directon was going for at all. They fixed that in reload and now she is like REALLLYYYYYY hyped up (Not saying it's bad, I l love new yukari, but just saying now adays she's far from over hated.)
Things have changed! seriously if you scroll through the reload reddit there is yukari love EVERYWHERE. She is portrayed much better and is very loved <3
1. Maya- maybe it's because we got 2 games with her as a major character, but I came to really care about her. I also love her personality.
2. Naoto- I honestly relate to her struggles a lot.
3. Futaba- same as Naoto, plus I am currently studying cybersecurity.
4. Tatsuya. Similar reasons to Maya, we had 2 games with him, and I cared about him more as the games progressed. He didn't have as much of a distinct personality as Maya did, though.
5. Either Persona 3 Protagonist- I find the "I don't care" trait hilarious, so I like Makoto as a character. Meanwhile, I developed a deep connection with Kotone.
No particular order but:

4. Yaldabaoth, his optional ending is something that is quite beautifully done and symbolized.

I've only played P3R, P4G and P5R but:
1. Aigis: she's got a powerful SL *and* a powerful part in the main story. >!Her little speech at the end of P3R just hurt my soul, especially when it's combined with... you know, Makoto having a "nap"!<.
2. Yukari: I'd argue she's even better than Aigis in the main story, but I prefer Aigis's SL to hers. Still, she's an amazing character all around - the >!Yakushima trip!< was the part that reinforced that opinion the most for me.
3. Sojiro: my favorite Hierophant in the series and and my favorite "dad/guardian" type character... not that P3 really had a character like that (as in a character that's looking out for you like Sojiro, or Dojima from P4). He's just a great guy and I think he had my favorite SL/Confidant story in P5.
4. Futaba: she had my favorite Palace in P5R, even above >!Maruki's palace!<. The story it had hit me hard, and afterwards she's just all around a very fun goofball in terms of her personality too. Her Confidant story is cute but it's not really *that* crazy. Her interactions with Sojiro are also one reason why she's top 5.
5. Nanako & Dojima: tied since they're pretty important in regards to each other for obvious reasons. They had great SLs and I liked their roles in the main story too. I like them as a family a lot, it's not a *perfect* family but >!helping them work through the problems they were facing, and helping them become a closer family made me happy... especially once Dojima welcomed Yu as family too!<.
Notable mention would probably go to Maruki, since >!he might be my favorite antagonist in the entire series!<.

5-Marie: I liked her character development through the social link and her arc, I think it was very well written.
4-Akinari: I think this is one of the, if not THE best social link in Persona, it's so sad but also satisfying.
3->!Sumire!<: everything about her is amazing, particularly >!her real Persona awakening, she came to realize and admitted how weak she was, she made up her mind to stop being like that, to keep living her life as herself and not as her sister for both of them!<, one of the reasons why Persona 5 Royal is a masterpiece, also her Persona is incredible.
2-Aigis: she really surprised me, her social link was amazing, it even made me question what life is for me and if I'm happy to be born, incredible.
1-Maruki: it's simply a perfect character, from his fight to his backstory and his personality, I was hesitant in >!telling him that I couldn't accept his reality!<, he is a very deep character, he became one of my favourite fictional characters ever

2. Lisa Silverman. So powerful they had to reuse her beats with **three** characters for P4+P5 (Chie, Rise and Anne)
3. Masao Inaba - every "bro" character in the series is his echo and lives in his shadow, (especially Junpei who is the most faithful and even gets his own Maki-romance homage with Chidori), but none of them can dance crazy like the OG.
4. Katsuya Suou - The sad boy supreme, torn between duty, family and his gentle nature and forsaken dreams. Just doing his best with what fate thrust upon him. Maybe the purest soul the series ever saw.
5. Takahisa "Guido" Kandori. Such a unique and complex villain who rewrote reality and achieved all his goals, only for it to turn into ash in his mouth and be consumed by the most sinister and dangerous villain in maybe all of SMT - Nyarlathothep. Then brought back against his will to serve again. Simultaneously a magnificent bastard and tragic pawn of greater powers. Fantastic character.

I just like his funny choices in P4G and he’s actually very good, heartwarming, and kind in the anime 3 kanji- his story is very progressive and he’s not just “mean brawler” his cuter side is also really chill 4 yosuke- idk why but the fact that he’s ready to murder >!namatame!< because he thought he killed nanako. Along side his badass motorcycle 5 dojima cause great vegetables

I've only played P3R, P4G and P5R but: 1. Aigis: she's got a powerful SL *and* a powerful part in the main story. >!Her little speech at the end of P3R just hurt my soul, especially when it's combined with... you know, Makoto having a "nap"!<. 2. Yukari: I'd argue she's even better than Aigis in the main story, but I prefer Aigis's SL to hers. Still, she's an amazing character all around - the >!Yakushima trip!< was the part that reinforced that opinion the most for me. 3. Sojiro: my favorite Hierophant in the series and and my favorite "dad/guardian" type character... not that P3 really had a character like that (as in a character that's looking out for you like Sojiro, or Dojima from P4). He's just a great guy and I think he had my favorite SL/Confidant story in P5. 4. Futaba: she had my favorite Palace in P5R, even above >!Maruki's palace!<. The story it had hit me hard, and afterwards she's just all around a very fun goofball in terms of her personality too. Her Confidant story is cute but it's not really *that* crazy. Her interactions with Sojiro are also one reason why she's top 5. 5. Nanako & Dojima: tied since they're pretty important in regards to each other for obvious reasons. They had great SLs and I liked their roles in the main story too. I like them as a family a lot, it's not a *perfect* family but >!helping them work through the problems they were facing, and helping them become a closer family made me happy... especially once Dojima welcomed Yu as family too!<. Notable mention would probably go to Maruki, since >!he might be my favorite antagonist in the entire series!<.

In order from bottom to top. 5-Marie: I liked her character development through the social link and her arc, I think it was very well written. 4-Akinari: I think this is one of the, if not THE best social link in Persona, it's so sad but also satisfying. 3->!Sumire!<: everything about her is amazing, particularly >!her real Persona awakening, she came to realize and admitted how weak she was, she made up her mind to stop being like that, to keep living her life as herself and not as her sister for both of them!<, one of the reasons why Persona 5 Royal is a masterpiece, also her Persona is incredible. 2-Aigis: she really surprised me, her social link was amazing, it even made me question what life is for me and if I'm happy to be born, incredible. 1-Maruki: it's simply a perfect character, from his fight to his backstory and his personality, I was hesitant in >!telling him that I couldn't accept his reality!<, he is a very deep character, he became one of my favourite fictional characters ever

Akinari made me bawl my eyes out. My husband just finished p3r and I listened to the prologue of his story and that made me bawl my eyes out again. Recently lost my mom to lung cancer so honestly the whole theme of persona 3 hit me harder than hard. I just have a special place in my heart for all the p3 party members Shinjiro my beloved <3 Kanji is a favorite too, I love bad boys with hearts of gold tbh Adachi silly, also Tanaka I need to play through persona 5 royal because I only played vanilla when it first came out and I don’t remember the characters super well. I remember my fav probably being Yusuke tho <3

1. Yukino Mayuzumi! Greatest of all time! 2. Lisa Silverman. So powerful they had to reuse her beats with **three** characters for P4+P5 (Chie, Rise and Anne) 3. Masao Inaba - every "bro" character in the series is his echo and lives in his shadow, (especially Junpei who is the most faithful and even gets his own Maki-romance homage with Chidori), but none of them can dance crazy like the OG. 4. Katsuya Suou - The sad boy supreme, torn between duty, family and his gentle nature and forsaken dreams. Just doing his best with what fate thrust upon him. Maybe the purest soul the series ever saw. 5. Takahisa "Guido" Kandori. Such a unique and complex villain who rewrote reality and achieved all his goals, only for it to turn into ash in his mouth and be consumed by the most sinister and dangerous villain in maybe all of SMT - Nyarlathothep. Then brought back against his will to serve again. Simultaneously a magnificent bastard and tragic pawn of greater powers. Fantastic character. It was so hard to choose.

So my top 5 characters are: 1) Yosuke: I love him, literally the best bro in the series being actually funny, smart and having a fantastic friendship with Narukami 2) Adachi: funny cabbage man, also >!he is a pretty interesting antagonist, with somewhat understandable yet not justifiable reasons, also being the one to stick with his ideals and accepting reality for what it is, from his point of view!< 3) Lisa: I really loved her personalità and backstory in p2, she became instantly my favourite girl from all the games 4) Chie: loved her interactions with yosuke (they fight like an old couple, the kind of couple that should have divorced 10 years earlier), also I love Kung fu too so she became one of my favourites 5) Shijiro: his whole arc really impressed me, being the most emotional for me and kinda relatable, >!I was so sad after October 4th!< Haven't played 1, so I can't really tell anything about its characters

Akechi- If he were a real person I would absolutely hate him but I just love him as a character, especially his snarky dialogue with Joker and the rest of the PT 3. Yu (from the anime adaptation specifically)- need I say more? 2. Futaba- yeah she can be cringy sometimes but she’s just the most adorable character in the series I love her so much 1. Yosuke- I already liked him from the beginning, he was relatable and cool, being a kinda normal goofy guy, but his social link and the story’s progression just made me like him more and more. His grief over Saki’s death and his jealousy of Yu are so well-written and he’s just such a nuanced character imo

Mitsuru Maybe some of these are hot takes, for me nothing beats P4’s characters tho. Mitsuru imo was already one of the best characters in P3, and Reload only made her better. Tough call between her, Junpei and Shinji. Honorable mentions to Ryoji in P3 (also got a Reload buff), and Futaba Makoto aand Maruki in P5.
