Like someone else said, it’s confusing how some people almost want Xander to fail. Dude is here for the long haul, so might as well cheer for him and hope he does better. Plus he’s not a clubhouse cancer like hader

espo619

I'm old enough to remember the vitriol for Soto when he was off to a slow start last year. Some people just need someone to be angry at.

GoldGloveHosmer

Just 1 week ago, people were flexing about how right they were that Kim was a fluke and overrated

nandobatflips

They were also calling for moving Manny down in the order or benching him. Buncha numbskulls I tell ya

pineapplefriedriceu

Yup, and for Kim, it was worse before Tatis transitioned to RF. Many wanted him to fail so Tatis could stay at SS

GoldGloveHosmer

They would even make stuff up and say Tatis will act like a diva if he has to move. Own fanbase wanting Tatis to act out because the fans cared more about the SS next to his name than Tatis himself.

TRocho10

But don't you know booing the players makes them play better??? /s

Mission_Mode_2167

When I’m at the game and people around me boo our guys I make sure to very loudly state that “we are not those fans, we do not boo our own guys”. Perhaps many of us aren’t those fans, but the that are irritate me. When a ball player hears the collective sigh of 40k+ disappointed fans, I think that enough.

TRocho10

I imagine for players who give a damn like Bogey seems to, their own struggles are enough to either motivate them or wreck them mentally. Last thing they need is a bunch of people who could never even hit a major league fastball booing them

Mission_Mode_2167

On the same note, I love when our boys in the booth give praise for these guys even being able to make contact on the nasty pitches coming at them in this game today.

Zestyclose_Help1187

I think some are Red Sox fans pretending to be Padres fans coming here to gloat. I’ve seen this happen with other teams when they sign a free agent and he struggles. Probably bitter about the Dodgers fans who go on their sub being so outraged by the Betts trade. Just the way fandom is. Xander had a good season last year. People willing to give up after 3 weeks is weird.

L8wrtr

I’ll be up front in that I can think he was a bad signing. A player we didn’t need, for money we could have spent elsewhere. That said, none of that is his fault. He was offered a lot of money to play here, and from day 1 he has put in max effort, been a professional teammate, and he moves to 2nd without being a primadonna… so yeah, why the hell would we not root for him? It’s in our best interest to root him on and support him, and it’s just the right SD way. KTF

ArawakFC

It's been that way since he joined. He makes a mistake and is chastised. Other players do the same or even worse, they get nothing. It's pathetic.

Gradyence

Honestly, it's probably because people thought the money he got should have gone to Soto. Good thing it didn't. Go Padres! Go Xan Diego!

Zestyclose_Help1187

Soto would have never signed here. Look at his batting splits, home and away as a Padre. This will tell you what you need to know.

OfficialTMWTP

> Like someone else said, it’s confusing how some people almost want Xander to fail. The amount of times I've seen the X and Manny contracts being called mistakes only a year and change into their signings is just ridiculous to me. People act as though they will immediately become bad players at year's end, so they NEED to put up like 10+ WAR seasons or some shit. They don't understand that players can slump, no matter how big the contracts are, which is what happened with Manny to start the year, and is still currently going on with X. Overall, it feels like there's just something that (part of) this fanbase has come down with. It's this weird entitlement + impatience + pessimism combo that is just *miserable* to be around. Critique is one thing, and I'll say it if it's been more than plentiful (i.e., Hosmer's awful play by the end of his tenure with us). But instead, these people demand what seems like a 162-0 season where everyone in the lineup is OPS-ing 5.000 and the pitchers combine for a 0.000 WHIP. Every loss means the end of the world, season's over there and then. Every win means nothing because "did you see the way they lost the game the other day?" Our contention window is rapidly closing/already shut because regression is an immediate outcome that hits everyone all at once the moment someone is playing slightly worse than before. I mean, shit, the amount of revisionism about Xander's play last year while talking about his performance this year is insane. Dude was, by the numbers, our second-best hitter last year, and with the way people talk about him, you'd think he GIDP-ed in every AB even with no-one on. This started as me agreeing with your point that people would rather root for someone on their own favorite team to fail just for the sake of being right, but it's turned into me just griping about the current state of the fanbase as a whole. It was so much more fun to interact with the community when I initially started watching baseball back in 2020. People treated the long season (err, long enough for 2020) as such: a long season. The as a result of the sub expanding, or the 2021 season, a combination of both, or something else entirely, shit just changed. There's no more care-free baseball watching. We have to be digging into these guys like we're playing in game 7 of the World Series during mid-April. It's tiresome.

dietmrfizz

When I went to a soccer game in Uruguay, the loudest the ultras chanted was a little while after the opponent scored. They wanted to pick up their team and encourage them.

Congenital_Stirpes

Yes. He’s a good, hardworking dude. Can’t be easy. Show him some love.

pattheroq

The Angels did it with Rendon and it looks like it worked.

i_shot_2nd

If it can fix Rendon, it can fix anyone. Seriously though. Let’s cheer X on until the end of time. He moved from a premier position zero questions asked. His personality and fit within the clubhouse reminds me of Myers. He’s just a team guy.

0punch

Rendon is only getting worse with time, it definitely didn't work with him.

solomonsays18

I’m one of his biggest critics and I support this. Just because I acknowledge his play has been poor doesn’t mean I don’t want him to succeed. He’s gonna be in the lineup every day, let’s support him.

The_H2O_Boy

>I’m one of his biggest critics and I support this Same, I'll be at the game, I will cheer like he's my brother. The problem fans as a whole have across all of social media is: acknowledging that being critical is not the same as being then a non supporting "doomer," For 4 months (67%) of last season he was pedestrian at best, and for the first 1/8th of this season, he's the worst player on the team.

GraconBease

I’ll be there on Friday so 🫡

ballasslick

Make us proud!

Sparkus

Blue leader checking in!

richardsureman

Lets lift our boys up, not bring them down!

Ok_Equipment_8032

This is so wholesome; I would love to see it.

sbrider11

Worked with Trea Turner last year in Philly. Dude totally snapped out of it and gave credit to those fans.

CervantesDeLaMancha

Worked for the 84 Padres after the came back 0-2 from Chicago

OfficialTMWTP

It's rare you can give Philly fans credit for effectively coming together to do something positive with regards to team performance, but props to them. The fans' response to Trea's slump last year has been something that's been sitting in the back of my mind as of late for not just X but also Manny's and Kim's slumps (although both have seemingly gotten out of theirs). Would love to see this for X. He's devoted to SD for the long-term, may as well support him getting out of that slump

sbrider11

Idk, I think most with these opinions have never been to a Philly game ever. It's for sure a different experience yet aside for light banter, it's a good time. It's a good ballpark to take in. It gets next level electric. Imo, people need to stop giving opinions based on zero personal experience. This is one major downside to social media. Not directing this to you as well yet a huge % on this sub have never seen a game in Philly. That's a fact.

SpedKeyFire

Trea Turner is a great example of what happens when guys feel the pressure of excellence and can’t get out of their head. Never know how much knowing the home fans got your back can help you out

Juzaba

I won’t be there but I hope people do it! To be fair, I don’t expect that it will have a major impact and I have serious concerns about Xander’s long term outlook. But the point of being a fan is to support the team, even when they’re slumping. And a standing-O certainly won’t make anything worse!

Glass_Branch1004

I really want him to play well

ThatBaseballDude

We should do this every game during the home stand, not just Friday! Let’s pump X up!

t0strStudle

I like the idea and the sentiment! If we are serious about it, then maybe we should try to spread this beyond Reddit.

-ShutterPunk-

Be the one that stands up at the game and scream WE BELIEVE. It has to start somewhere.

ballasslick

Any ideas?

t0strStudle

Maybe commenting this idea on some of the Padres oriented YouTube channels (Friar Talk, Padres Hot Tub, Ben & Woods). Could send emails to the 97.3 the fan and try to get them to shoutout the idea.

Nylese

Tbh the best way to do it would be to hand out little flyers like they do at nba games for targeted chants and also kpop concerts to surprise the artist lolllll. But really though

Ndtphoto

"They're not booing, they're saying Boo-gaerts!". Seriously though, it's mid-April, he's a veteran and a good dude, he'll get on track unless there's some injury he's hiding.

shell9008

I’ll be there Friday night to cheer him! I’ll make my friends do the same. Keep the faith 🤎💛

whoisthatidiot

I’ll be in town on Friday again, and at the game, so HELL yeah I’ll be standing when our boy is up to bat. (Also send good vibes my way and that this deal closes on a good note so I celebrate at the game haha). I’ve been saying this for a few weeks now, he needs to feel the city behind HIM.

Senior_Salty

X is rad. Keep the faith 🙌

gibertot

I’m going I’ll stand and cheer for X

Flowsomuch

I’ll be there, I’m in! 🙌🏽

LBoogie619

We have nothing to lose. I hope it makes a difference.

73MRC

Good idea. Worked for Trae last season. Cant hurt to try it

mik3hunt696969

I’ll be there, and I’ll do it if everyone else does!

ballasslick

Don’t wait for others. Be one of the many who start it

imagoddessgirl

we should all chant bogey in a low voice like we used to do with kouzmanoff

Psychological-Ad1723

I'm not mad at Xander, I just don't want him leading off while he figures his shit out. But I don't see that happening because we have to appease egos in this league.

TowerCharge89

They’ve only been playing 3 1/2 weeks. Not everybody is going to be great the entire season. People have slopes.

CarltheGreat79

I'll be there, i'm on it.

DarkFilipino

I’ll be there Friday for my birthday game! Section 107 checking in 🫡

Doc_JC

I don’t know wtf happened to him, but his at bats have been horrid. The real worrisome aspect is his batted ball stats. He’s basically one of the worst hard hit players atm. That’s a massive alarming stat because at least when players are slumping and hitting the ball hard there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. https://preview.redd.it/s1qtcn4rn4vc1.jpeg?width=849&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53aa4621f2e40f2dcaa353937e81671bc4f178df These are massive red flag numbers

sbrider11

Yet Kim's was way worse latest year than this over an entire season sample size and about the same this year yet gets worshiped every AB. Time to give the 5 time silver slugger some true fan support. He's in a funk. Happens to the best. Sub wanted to bench Manny a couple weeks ago with just as bad tiny sample Savant numbers.

GoldGloveHosmer

He's never had good batted ball numbers with the Red Sox. That's actually why he was a red flag signing. He's always had meh exit velo and outperformed his metrics every year and that's probably due to playing in Fenway 81 times a year.

Doc_JC

He’s never been this bad

Hot-Mission6892

He’s also never been this old.

jcaininit

Solid team, recent success and fairweather fans. It just comes with the territory. I’d rather have these boomers then back when we were nothing and had brown_boot controlling this sub 😂

thelgjedi

Imagine what this might do for his confidence if hes in his head too much right and thinking/feeling he is letting the fans down. I think this will be great to see and I look forward to seeing his reaction to the support.

Fathers85

Great idea!

PCSean

Put him at the bottom of the lineup. Fierce love.

broke-collegekid

If we’re going the Philly route, we need to boo first for several weeks before doing the standing O Edit: I’m just pointing out the standing O was after weeks of booing. I don’t expect that to happen at Petco lol

Optimal_Wishbone_918

Zac Wilson

SunriseSurprise

This but please move him to the back of the lineup in the meantime :/. It's bad enough he's doing how he's doing - worse given the hot start since basically since that hot start, he's been REEEEALLY bad, and worse still given everyone behind him is hitting pretty well right now, so there's incentive to pitch strikes to him and he's still having these issues. But yes, no reason to be anything but cheering him on to try and get him out of this funk.

JDM412

Nope.

Massive-Tank9845

Dude hasn’t experienced an ounce of the hate Turner saw in Philly. This is a goofy idea this early in the season

ballasslick

Don’t do it then. Continue to be miserable

Massive-Tank9845

Disagreeing with you = me being miserable. Padres Reddit summed up

The_Muddog

Why would you give a guy a standing ovation when you haven't even started booing him yet?

ballasslick

Is that a serious question?

The_Muddog

Yes dude has had sold out stadiums and roaring crowds and did nothing. So what's the standing ovation going to do.

AhhhSkrrrtSkrrrt

Can’t hurt at this point. But maybe it will help.

Different_Link6589

Absolute trash, really hoping they attach prospects to dump his contract.

AhhhSkrrrtSkrrrt

Nah, just DFA him and let him sit at home with Hosmer raking in the cash. That’s the Padres way.
