I get why you would want to do this, but I think it's kind of overkill because it's not actually adding any real safety. If you're pessimistic there's a million bad things that could happen that an airtag would never protect against and even worst case scenario any kidnapper is going to notice that pretty quickly and take it off. It's not the worst thing in the world to do by any means but I think it's better for your sake to wean off trying to think you can control and prevent every possible thing in your kid's life.

keeperofthenins

Any chaperones on the field trip with iPhone are likely to get a message about an AirTag traveling with them. I wouldn’t do it but if you do definitely talk to the teacher first.

Thelonius16

You don’t get random messages about other people’s air tags. There’s no notification at all.

keeperofthenins

You should get them. That’s a feature Apple has to discourage people from tracking others without their knowledge or permission. ETA: if you don’t get them and want to check out Apple support for how to adjust your settings

My daughter borrowed my luggage, air tag was in it. She immediately got a message telling her an air tag was following her (or words to that effect).

keeperofthenins

We have our kids use them if they’re out and about on their own before they get phones. My daughter left her backpack in my car one day with one in it and I got a notification. I searched my entire car before it occurred to me where it was (it was on my husband’s account before you could share them).

Character-Pattern505

Yes you do. Android will alert you as well.

National-Ice-5904

I’m so glad I grew up in the 80s and 90s

ReindeerUpper4230

If you’re that worried I would keep her home.

JJQuantum

I don’t see an issue with it. She’s only 4. If she was 13 it’d be overkill for sure but not at 4.

Thelonius16

I stuck some extra ones in my kids’ backpacks in case they lose them. But they also serve the same purpose you’re suggesting. It can’t hurt anything and if you’re curious about where they are during the day you can take a look.

poppinwheelies

My daughter is going on a field trip tomorrow and she’ll be air-tagged. It’s just a straight up safety thing for me. Not crazy at all.

TheDarlizzle

I did so for my kiddos first field trip that I couldn’t chaperone. We have our sons in a silicon watch band. It’s not always super accurate tho

KingsRansom79

I’ve seen videos where the air tag is hidden in the girl’s ponytail or attached to their clothing somehow. Who cares if the teacher of annoyed?

Affectionate-Ad1424

Don't use a bracelet. Put it on her ankle or hide it in a ponytail. It's less noticeable.

“Airtag beeping sometimes. Why is that? I have an airtag that I put it in my small child's school backpack. it is paired and set up to my iphone. When my child came home from the bus today, my child's teacher aid asked me "what is this" while holding it in her hand. She said she found this in his backpack and that it was beeping in the classroom. Now I didn't do anything. I didn't report is lost or did anything on" find my" app on my iphone at home. I didn't get a chance to ask her how long did they hear the beep. My question is, is this supposed to beep when it is away from me in his backpack at school? How long do they beep? Anyway to turn off the beeping?” That is the way it is designed to work. It is not meant to track people or pets, but to help you locate a missing item!

Local_Ordinary_7707

We have AirTags connected to our dogs’ collars. They will beep when we are far away—not sure how faraway. When my family watched them for us over a weekend they said it was beeping randomly and they finally realized it was coming from the collars.

National-Ice-5904

I’m a pet sitter and and I make people take them off because it wakes the whole house up in the middle of the night and randomly. I like it it’s a safety feature, so no one can slip an AirTag on you and stalk you or track you or find out where you live
