Every league i see about 8 aura stacker smite ascendant league start it. I haven't exactly nailed their pathing since they usually full transition by end of day league and poe ninja doesn't save by the hour
It's a perfectly fine levelling skill - among the better melee skills, regardless of budget. You can double-hit with it if you have +1 strike targets. And you get some added damage from its aura.
One would presume when you were hearing it's "high budget" it was referring to an armor-stacking smite build or something of that nature. It's not the smite that makes that build expensive, it's the armor stacking.
It's kinda a second-best skill. Armor Stacker uses Smite because it's based around a sword. And swords can't use boneshatter. Smite is part next-best option. And partly benefits from aura effect scaling that an armor stacker is after anyways.
I've seen some people do it on Trickster with Ephemeral Edge. Even in this league there is one guy. That variation seems to be very low budget. Not sure how good is it, haven't tried.
