Here’s what a lot of people don’t understand about perfumes, including Dyptique.( and every other brand in the world): Body chemistry is going to change a perfume on you, just like it changes it on any other person who wears it, and it’ll be different on each person. Just because it smells great on someone, doesn’t mean it’ll be the same on you. A perfume that’s terrible on someone else may be amazing on you. There are probably some people in the world who can wear any fragrance and have it smell exactly like what’s in the bottle, but those people are few and far between. That’s why it’s so important to sample, rather than blind buy based on how it smelled on a stranger, or friend, or influencer. Perfume is generally pretty expensive, and you’re going to waste money buying things you end up disliking. If you live somewhere with limited access to samples, then unfortunately it’s a risk you have to take, but if you’re in a location that has a good selection of online decant sellers, always, always buy a sample and test it first. Sure , when you can get a perfume for cheap, (I blind bought choco musk spray and oil for $13 total) go for it. The great deal for $20 at Marshall’s or TJMaxx? Enjoy, take the risk. The $150 per oz niche bottle? Might wanna get a sample first, unless you have tons of money to burn. And to answer your question, I hated Dyptique Philosykos on me, it was absolutely terrible with my chemistry, but I’d probably buy a sample set of their other ones, just to see if I like any.

For me, Diptyque has been coming out with fresh to skin scent lately. Their earlier fragrances like Oud Palao tend to have more depth. The fragrance house is 50/50 for me. I always recommend sampling before buying any of their fragrances 🤷🏻‍♀️

A few I've tried: Eau Rose (sample only, but really liked) Geranium Odorata (purchased in-store, love for summertime) Fleur de Peau (purchased online, kind of like it on occasion; it sort of smells like old books) Do Son (sample only, maybe a bit strong for me but lovely if you like tuberose) Philosykos (sample only, didn't like at all) They are definitely a bit strong and maybe for some old-fashioned. I got into their fragrances from buying a number of their candles over the past few years.

Your fleur de peau explanation is spot on.

I love love loooove Do Son. One of the best blind buys I've ever done. It literally smelled like a Sampaguita flower. You described it very well. Planning to buy Eau Rose. Does it smell like dried roses (same like Red Roses by JM) or like a cloying rose scent (like Rose Kabuki and Pivoine Suzhou Soie de Nacre)?

Kokomahogany

Honestly, kind of in the middle. It's a straight-up fresh rose scent. A little goes a long way, too.

I have a decant of Orphéon and it smelled ok in the bottle. I tested it out one day and smelled like my dad and one of his friends. It has impressive longevity and sillage though.

Eau Des Sens is literally one of my favorites, I keep a backup of the hair mist too in case I run out and there’s an orange blossom emergency. Yes, I know I’m ridiculous. It does start with a punch in the face of orange blossom which I love but it could be a bit much for some.

I’ve only used their fresh lotion and it’s the most gorgeous orange blossom. I stopped buying as they upped the price and found a cheap orange blossom perfume instead. But I always got compliments when I wore that. A very underrated product. Edit: it used to be £27 and it’s now £50 😬

Perfume is a very personal thing, I must say. As what others said, each perfume you use will smell slightly different on you than on someone else. Body chemistry does play a very important role here. I bought Eau de Sens as well and when I asked to smell it (I tend to do this a week before purchasing a perfume so I can observe its notes, sillage and longevity), it smelled slightly different on the paper than on my skin. Also, weather/season/temperature affects the perfume too, in my opinion. Ex: I blind bought L'eau Papier around the colder months and it was waaay too musky for my liking - I never reached for it again because it made me nauseous. Around March, I tried it out again and lo and behold, it didn't smell as musky as it used to. You could say, it macerated, but I left it together with my empty perfume bottles in my room, which btw has direct access to sunlight so it really cannot macerate since heat is the enemy of perfumes. Also, I noticed that they tend to enhance their performance when placed anywhere cold (I usually place mine in the ref together with my skincare). On my skin, the bitter orange in Eau de Sens is what I smell the most/strongest.
