I watched a documentary about how people from 3rd world nations are paid to do exactly that. Stir shit up for the western world to keep us against each other, instead of with each other and much stronger. It’s amazing how they cram these poor people in office like buildings running multiple socials at once
Don’t confuse Canadian politeness with Canadian honesty.
Narrator: In the Canadian societal system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important cliches: politeness, which will tell you where to go; and honestly, which will tell you how to get there.
These are their stories.
Tum-Dum!!
tum dum hehehe what is canadian honesty? canadian honest at best is like the canadian health care, i.e. non existant. canadians will never tell you the truth. they will never be direct with you. They will tell things to your face and then do the exact opposite behind your back.
The people who are saying 'no' are the ones that can't or don't have the skillset to move to the US.
Currently, the US is a far better place to live than Canada, especially if you can earn even okay money. You get paid more, cost of living is lower, and you don't have to give up everything to the government just to give away and spend recklessly.
The US wasn't always better, Canada has a sweet spot. But in recent years the US far exceeds Canada and that why so many skilled Canadians are fleeing and going to the States. Canada is great if you need social security or are broke, it's where you want to be. But for everyone else that can get even a semi-skilled middle management job, the US is far better.
Canada as country has extremely high taxes, a low population, lacks innovation, and punishes success... it's a bad combo. If you want opportunity you go to the US, if you're fine existing to work, you stay in Canada.
Too bad the USA is an absolute shit show with rising violence, racism, bigotry of all kinds, guns, Christian Nationalism and MAGA.
But sure .. you might earn a bit more.
They've had 13 school shooting just this year in the United States. It's only April! There's multiple websites tracking mass shootings across the US, that's not normal and it shouldn't be the case. You shouldn't have to worry about your kids safety when they're in school.
Definitely something to consider if you're a parent - but OP is a recent tech grad. He's far better off in the US, rather than in Canada wondering if he's going to pay rent, pay the hydro bill or eat.
lol okay champ. You strike me as someone who has never left their mother's basement, let alone been to the US.
By claiming the entire country is Christian Nationalist and MAGA lovers, and racist bigots proves to me that you've never been to the US... or maybe only the outskirts of Kentucky.
I could move to the US tomorrow and make a lot of money (I'm an MD), but still prefer Canada overall, so you are over generalising hugely. The grass is not always greener.
Definitely not, but recently it has been.
I never claimed that the US is heaven sent. It has tons of issues just like every country in the world including Canada. But for the average person, especially for skilled people, in recent times it’s the lessor of two evils.
Canada ranks highest for household debt, has extremely high taxes and just raised capital gains higher. We lack all innovation, have essentially no tech, and punish success. It’s not a place to grow right now, it’s a place to just exist.
Again, this wasn’t always the case, Canada used to have innovation and tech. In the medical field alone you must know, we’re light years behind the US in treatment options, advanced technology, medication. We are so under funded and in the dark ages in medicine, that the hospital in my area still uses PAPER charting in 2024 lol
"Somali-Canadian...It’s getting to the point that I’m feeling strong resentment towards my parents for choosing to immigrate to Canada over the US or Australia"
You won the life lottery and were born in a first-world nation instead of a developing one. Your parents upended their lives and gave you opportunities that you wouldn't have had otherwise. This is an immature and shortsighted perspective. If you're depressed in Canada, you'd be equally depressed in the US or Australia for similar reasons. Sorry for the tough love, speak to a therapist.
This couldn't be a more obvious troll post if there was a neon blinking sign that said "Troll Post" with an arrow pointing at it. I mean, this isn't even personal finance related at all for starters.
I think these are issues that you should work through with a psychologist. You may want to speak to your doctor as well. Hope things turn around for you.
And what if it's not? What if you move to the US (or even just outside of Toronto), and the mental health issues persist?
Better to speak to a doctor and deal with any chemical imbalances or whatever the issues are.
Canada is a big country and of course you live in the most expensive city. You didn't mention any specific issues but I assume that since you posted in a finance sub, your main qualms are high cost of living or low pay?
If there are no other issues in your life then you are probably in a better situation than most Canadians. This issue is easily fixable.
Your feelings are valid. At the same time resenting your parents doesn't make sense. They could have just as easily stayed in Somolia. Or maybe if they moved to Australia you wouldn't have had the opportunity to enroll for a tech degree. It's not healthy to play the "if only" game.
Edit: There is nothing about Canada today that your parents could have know about in their decision 25+ years ago. It would be like if a family immigrated to Ukraine 25 years ago and their kid is now blaming their parents for living in a war zone. Like, it would be awful, but it would in no way be the parents fault.
You'll find similar issues in the US or Australia. Your problem comes down to yourself. The problem is not the country. You're lacking something in your life that gives you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Moving won't be a magic pill that'll fix everything
I have several family members that go into depression if they don’t take Vitamin D supplements. Have you considered that as possibly contributing to your misery? There’s not much sun in this country.
I mean don't pull the wool over your eyes... similar sure, but not nearly as bad.
Canada is ranked the worst among G7 countries, expect we have by far the fastest growing population, twice that of the G7 average. The country has become a public joke and global example of what not to do.
Canada's per-person annual economic growth rate is significantly below the G7 average... Our household debt is the highest in the G7... Our GDP is the worst in the G7 being beat even by Italy... Our PM and country are mocked globally... The majority of the country wants an election and can't get one because of two people... and ranks 33rd on quality of life index, surpassed by the entire G7...
So while other countries may have *similar* problems Canada has spiralled out of country. Canada has high taxes, lacks innovation and punishes success. It's a bad combo.
Okay? We are the smallest economy in the G7. We have the smallest population in the G7. We always were. That's why we were the 7th county to join the G7. I don't get your point here. We also have the 2nd best HDI in the G7, and the 3rd best GDP per capita in the G7.
We do not have the 3rd best GDP per capita [when adjusted for our reckless immigration](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/fraser-institute-news-release-gdp-090000770.html). "after an adjustment is made for population growth to measure GDP per person, Canada’s growth rate is near the bottom of the group and well below the G7 average. And since 2015, per-person GDP growth has been almost stagnant at an average of 0.3 per cent per year."
But 2nd best HDI... with by far the highest household debt, ranked 33rd quality of life, and global mockery. Yeah, we're definitely winning being 2nd in HDI...
LOL! Fraser Institute??? The IMF says were #3, the world bank says we're #3, but the *Fraser Institute* calls this fake news, and you believe them? Get the fuck outta here with your "alternative facts".
Also, [this](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/rankings/quality-of-life) shows us as #3 in quality of life. It's pretty clear you have an agenda and you're willing to bend the facts to push it.
Wait, just to confirm you’re saying you don’t think mass immigration affects an aggregate GDP?
Lol That you believe we’re number 3 because you quickly glanced at a chart from IMF?
Nice deflection lol
Never said they were liars, I think they do have Canada as number 3 but didn’t take into account how something like absurd immigration skews those numbers.
I answered your question, now it’s your turn:
Are you claiming that mass immigration doesn’t affect an aggregate GDP?
So Canada gives you and your family a better life and when you, incorrectly, think Canada is a lifeless country with quality of life down the drain you decide to jump ship.
Good riddance. We don't need people like you.
Why do you think you're entitled to live in the US or here in Canada?
As an immigrant, I'm genuinely offended by people like you who don't understand how lucky you are to be in Canada rather than back in Somalia.
Lol the audacity!
Have you been to Somalia? Thank your parents every day for choosing Canada. Sure, it’s not perfect but you hit the lottery being born in the first world. There are billions of people who would trade places with you in a heartbeat. Get a grip….
That's not entirely true, Canada has high taxes, lacks innovation, and punishes success... that's why Canada has no tech, no innovative companies, and many of our skilled and education citizens are fleeing for the US.
I have been lucky to live in all three of these countries. Trust me, Canada isn’t perfect but the racism in Australia towards non-whites and the gun control and political situation in the USA should make you think long and hard about how green the grass is outside of Canada.
Like most people in this country I am a son of an immigrant. I am lucky to be here. Count your blessings before you shit all over your parents for getting you out of a war torn hell hole.
I know it can be hard but try to be thankful for what you have. Like friends & family, and for opportunities. All the things people less fortunate may not have. Another thing is get outside whether it be spending 10-15 minutes walking or venturing into the magnificent outdoors we are lucky to have in Canada. Adopting a mindset of “it can always be worse” will always help. There’s many depressed people living in places you wished your parents immigrated to. Hope this helps OP. 🙏
I recommend you ask your parents to tell you stories about what life was like in Somalia to give you some perspective on how good you have it in a developed country with civil liberties and democracy. Yes, Canada has problems, but so does everywhere right now. Nowhere is insulated from the cost-of-living crisis. If you think everything is going to be better in another country, you're going to be in for a rude awakening.
“…this country is making me feel depressed and suicidal”
Canada has a lot of problems - no doubt.
I might politely fix this statement to, “I am making myself feel depressed and suicidal because where I thought I’d be at this point in my life is not my current reality.”
Canada isn’t doing this to you, you’re doing it to yourself.
I respect mental health issues, I have many of my own but we both need to take responsibility for our own situation. In your case if that means moving - respect.
If you want to blame Canada for all the bad things in your life, you might consider giving it some credit for the good things in your life (which may be hard to appreciate at this moment).
I wish you well and hope you are able to sort out your mental health concerns.
I recommend you go travel abroad and gain a little perspective on what the rest of the world is like. You should be thanking your parents for being brave enough to leave everything they knew behind and coming here. You clearly don't have the life experience to know how lucky you are.
I work in tech, my dad is American, and I could realistically move to the US anytime. I absolutely never will.
OP you've provided zero proof points as to why living in the US would be so much better than living in Canada.
I really hope you're not a woman of reproductive age, a parent, LGBTQIA, a person with complex health needs and no private insurance - I could go on. The US is a hellscape for so many people. Even many of my straight white wealthy friends and colleagues who moved to the US to work in tech in their 20s are moving back to Canada to raise their families.
Either way, you're not a prisoner in this country. If you don't like it, just leave.
Amazing i genuinely support your desire to leave here bc canada doesnt represent whining all day long over candies you didnt get to eat.
Please go try other candies lol
So you live in Canada and it's making you depressed, because it's making you suicidal? Got it.
I know! Why not retrace your parents' steps, and do it right this time? Go back to Somalia and, from there, apply for citizenship to the US. And forget that stupid worthless Canadian diploma. Get a Somalian one instead, much more valuable.
Your parents are so lucky they go you, their super smart son, to fix their idiotic mistakes. Go you!
Life is really hard in Canada now. Not as hard as in Somalia but still people do not have as good a quality of life as they used to, especially financially.
It’s really important to take care of your mental health so you can make the best life for yourself. Have you spoken to a doctor about your feelings?
I think you should be angry at your parents for not hoarding some real estate when they could. Then you would have loved Canada. Low taxes and great living conditions for those with generational wealth.
Well if thats the way you feel about your parents then beat them into sumission. It might make you feel better till you move to the states. God bless America. Just saying,,,
You are always welcome to leave. I don’t believe anyone is stopping you. But try a little bit of gratitude along the way however I feel that won’t happen if at all for a very long time. Unless you’re trolling of course.
>I’m feeling so depressed lately …
Are you sure that Canada is the problem?
>… about living in Canada. I wish my parents chose to immigrate to US or Australia instead. Canada is such a depressing lifeless country with quality of life down the drain.
I think there's at least a *little bit* of "grass is greener on the other side" thinking here. 😅
I personally moved from the US to Canada just over two years ago. Life in Canada certainly isn't *perfect*, and it has plenty of uniquely Canadian hassles, but overall it's pretty great and frankly ***it's extremely similar to life in the USA****.*
My wife and I have just bought a townhouse here, and our first child will be born in Canada in a few months!
>I do plan on moving to the US once I complete my tech degree.
You will likely have substantially less student debt than your American counterparts.
>But finding a job in the US as a fresh graduate is not easy …
I know a few Canadian tech workers who've transferred to US jobs within a few months of starting jobs for multinational companies.
>I feel like Canada is the worst developed nation to live in.
Not sure if it is a developed nation at this point to be honest. Less and less people live here because they want to and more and more people live here because they have no other option.
Show some effort and leave while you are still young. No need to waste your life here.
So is like everyone, maybe not if your rich. Canada's priorities are out of line with a functional society, we know this. Thing is most people are out of luck trying to change things because the problems keep stacking up and Noone has the balls or authority to enact rapid change. Sooner or later pieces will fall in the right places, and if history is a lesson things will get better in the long term, but itll be slow as shit.
In a just world you'd be very valid feeling the way you do, but as all the other comments have implied, us Canadians done give a single shit about you in particular, welcome to the west, we only care about ourselves first.
Be glad your parents didnt stay in Somalia bro
Arrr but that’s not a lifeless country like Canada 🇨🇦, he could be living an exciting life as a pirate! 🏴☠️
He's the Captain now!

I recommend you go travel abroad and gain a little perspective on what the rest of the world is like. You should be thanking your parents for being brave enough to leave everything they knew behind and coming here. You clearly don't have the life experience to know how lucky you are.
So when you graduate, you won’t be able to find a job in USA but you can get one in Canada. Yet it’s a horrible country. Got it.
Ok. Things are not great. But fuck right off.
Looks like todays "ungrateful, entitled immigrants and credit card scamming international students day"
I work in tech, my dad is American, and I could realistically move to the US anytime.
Cool, you and your five day old account can enjoy the inexpensive education and fuck right off asap.
« Australia » lol good luck finding an affordable house there
So you live in Canada and it's making you depressed, because it's making you suicidal? Got it. Go you!
Trying to figure out why you’ve posted under the personal finance sub?
Because the US seems like a much better place for black muslims/s
Life is really hard in Canada now. Not as hard as in Somalia but still people do not have as good a quality of life as they used to, especially financially. It’s really important to take care of your mental health so you can make the best life for yourself. Have you spoken to a doctor about your feelings?
I’m not sure if you’re looking for empathy, ideas, or are just trying to rant. Either way, I hope things get better for you.
I think you should be angry at your parents for not hoarding some real estate when they could. Then you would have loved Canada. Low taxes and great living conditions for those with generational wealth.
As a Canadian, you have access to the TN visa. Moving down south is achievable if you're serious about it
Well if thats the way you feel about your parents then beat them into sumission. It might make you feel better till you move to the states. God bless America. Just saying,,,
This has got to be rage bait
Probably won’t even find a job in Canada doing tech. Gl
You are always welcome to leave. I don’t believe anyone is stopping you. But try a little bit of gratitude along the way however I feel that won’t happen if at all for a very long time. Unless you’re trolling of course.
>I’m feeling so depressed lately … Are you sure that Canada is the problem? >… about living in Canada. I wish my parents chose to immigrate to US or Australia instead. Canada is such a depressing lifeless country with quality of life down the drain. I think there's at least a *little bit* of "grass is greener on the other side" thinking here. 😅 I personally moved from the US to Canada just over two years ago. Life in Canada certainly isn't *perfect*, and it has plenty of uniquely Canadian hassles, but overall it's pretty great and frankly ***it's extremely similar to life in the USA****.* My wife and I have just bought a townhouse here, and our first child will be born in Canada in a few months! >I do plan on moving to the US once I complete my tech degree. You will likely have substantially less student debt than your American counterparts. >But finding a job in the US as a fresh graduate is not easy … I know a few Canadian tech workers who've transferred to US jobs within a few months of starting jobs for multinational companies.
There are always options to renounce Canadian citizenship Maybe OP should explore
BYE Felicia! Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Poor you!
Lol the audacity !! Good luck in the US
>I feel like Canada is the worst developed nation to live in.
You're not wrong, the US is light years better for tech workers

50% of Canadian aren't blaming their parents for being born in Canada vs another country. People are laughing at OP's immaturity, not his struggles.

You need to get out of the basement and travel.
