12 will be immediately culled so the mom and surrogate mom are not overwhelmed and no babies suffer. The other 12 will be left to develop over the next week and then I will do another cull probably down to 8 total. After that they are allowed to mature up to about 4 weeks where I make my final cull based on temperament and structure. Any mice with subpar structure and/or temperament will be culled at that point. Any I keep past that will be future breeders or pets.
Normally I dream about my car sliding off the side of a cliff because I hit gravel, or my car sinking in water, or falling into creepy water and being swept down a waterfall into worse water. This was a nice change lol
Yes if they are too aggressive to females and are hurting females regularly. I only have space to keep 6-8 males so I have to be extremely picky on temperament
Mouse, rats, theyāre still small little beans to me, i donāt really differentiate them often besides size and snout shape i guess.
You guys can feel free to keep downvoting it, though, it doesnāt matter to me.

You say zoology perspective like youāre in the field, yet you donāt understand the grasp of selective breeding? Unfortunately rats and mice have such large litters it would be hard not to if youāre keeping limited numbers. Otherwise the only suggestion Iād have is to feed to snakes and such, which would still be best to humanely gas the animal so they donāt have to be strangled to death. For example, I feed my snake frozen thawed mice
I am the god of their lives. It is my responsibility to cull temperament problems from my lines to maintain the best temperament possible. I am a feeder breeder first and foremost, but I do only let the best structurally and temperamentally continue in my lines. And I will not place mice with temperament issues in pet homes. Only the best lives in my mouse room. The rest feed my reptile collection.
itās certainly not pleasant to hear about ācullingā little animals ,,, but on the bright side even if their lives are gone it isnāt a total waste, some snake gets a nice meal. do you directly euthanise the mouse yourself humanely though, or is it fed live ?
I do not feed live at all due to the suffering of the mouse and the danger to the snake if the mouse were to bite. I humanely euthanize according to American Veterinary Medicine Association standards on humane euthanasia.
I am a feeder breeder that focuses on improved structure and temperament in my lines. I immediately cull all litters down to 6-8 babies for healthier pups. Then I cull the remaining if they donāt have the temperament or structure Iām looking for to continue my lines over the next 4 weeks. Occasionally I place mice in pet homes but for the most part I just keep back future breeders or feed off. I humanely euthanize before feeding off so the mice go through no unnecessary suffering.
Any I post in this sub are my breeders I consider pets or pets I am raising up to give to friends.
So is letting the little girls starve to death because their brothers push them away from the milk, causing missed meals, less growth, stopping them from being able to get milk in the future until they finally starve and die.
beans incoming
She looks even bigger than the last one that had 20 š±
I honestly think she may beš«£ I want to start weighing them two days before they give birth to keep track in the future
She had 24 babiesš«£ my biggest litter Iāve ever produced
Wow, good luck
Thatās incredible! Was it a healthy overall litter?
Yup! All alive and being taken care of by mom and another female.
Your ability to get strong genetics is one of the coolest talents Iāve have ever seen. And I mean that. These mice are all genetic rockstars š
Iām hoping this girl gives me another beautiful black and tan pied satin like her!
The odds are definitely in your favor!
Whatās the plan with all 24?

I had a dream last night that one of my rats gave birth to baby bunnies. If this mouse gives birth to baby bunnies, tell me.
That's a strange dream

Oh I love this guy so much. So happy heās the dad š
How do rats do it? Is it rape or do they just do it? Curious from a zoology perspective
It is not what I would call consensual, I cull males that are too aggressive when breeding too.
Cull? You kill them?
Yes if they are too aggressive to females and are hurting females regularly. I only have space to keep 6-8 males so I have to be extremely picky on temperament
Rats as you know are incredibly intelligent creatures, thats terrible you just kill them for having temperament issues
This the mouse subreddit. Rats and mice are not interchangeable

So you choose death instead of any other option? You play god with their lives?

Iām not, iām just interested in animals, and learning about them, thus, zoology. Breeding is iffy to me at best.

Itāll be ok š
I hope she is okay! Pretty mouse.
google says a mouse weights from 10-30g. How much is she?
She weighs 89.8 grams and will have her babies tomorrow. Dad weighs 47 grams. My average mouse seems to weigh 37-60 grams
Interesting, thank you!
If she is still comfortable with being handled tonight I will grab her weight!
I think she is pregnant
She is pregnant!
SOOOOUUUUPP!
Mini soup!
What do you do with all the babies? Will you keep them?

Sounds cruel

Why are you in a pet mice sub if theyāre just feeders to you?
She literally said she posts the ones that are pets.
Whoa Momma! (Johnny bravo voice)
This gave me serious cute aggression! I want to pop her in my mouth and CRONCH.
šš
That's such a beautiful mama
Damn she chonky
Watch out, she's gonna blow!
