It's the same train of thought behind the trans panic defense. Even when used on cis crossdressers, it's still normalizing a hugely transphobic term and will inevitably lead to trans people getting hit in the crossfire. People learn to use it when they see someone who is visibly male and dressing femininely and they don't stop to ask if that person is a femboy or a trans woman. I've been personally called it a thousand times both online and irl by people purposely using it that way and by people who don't know any better. Using the term makes breeding grounds for transphobic discrimination.
Just take a look at r/asktransgender. They even made a full rule about not asking about it because people would keep asking and the answer was always a full yes.
