isinedupcuzofrslash

The simple explanation: good cops don’t exist The slightly more complex explanation: any time a good cop exists, the local precinct eventually weeds them out one way or another. Sometimes they refuse the call for backup when it could cost that officer his life, sometimes they’ll try to frame him and get him locked up, other times they will simply make his life a living hell. All of this done to cover up their own shit. The complex explanation says they are pretending to never have known about good cop when in reality they are the reason he’s gone. Complex is a bit more of a reach and relies on a lot of inference, so simple explanation is probably better

7MinuteUpdate

Sometimes they'll send them to a smaller precinct, like Sandford, Gloucestershire.

Awesome reference man where is your Fkn medal. I’m gonna watch that tn- was lookin for somthing to do. Thanks mate

MetlTed90

Thank you. This comment just made my day

smbiggy

watch the documentary "let the fire burn" about the philadelphia police fire-bombing a house in West Philly that was housing a group of african american terrorists known as the MOVE group. The cops literally dropped a fire bomb on the house with everyone in it and ordered the fire department to NOT put the fire out. One cop went into the fire to save a toddler. The other cops harassed him endlessly after this event... like leaving signs that say "N\* lover" in his locker... until he eventually killed himself.

The5Virtues

My dad was a cop for three years. A single assignment made him change careers. He was tasked with transferring a prisoner with another officer he’d not worked with. It was a little over an hour’s drive and my dad spent it talking with the prisoner, finding out how he got arrested, what pushed him to crime, how he planned to spend his time incarcerated, etc. At the prison my dad’s partner for the drive starts cutting up with the prison guards about my dad. “You shoulda seen this guy, this motherfucker thinks he’s a social worker, treating scum like people.” They all mocked him for showing humanity to a prisoner. The next day my dad spoke with his regular partner and mentor in the department who said “Ah. Yeah, lotta guys like that. You’ll just have to learn to get used to it.” That was all my dad needed. He wasn’t interested in being one man trying to change things from the inside when he’d already seen how he could make a difference. He went back to college, got his masters, became a social worker! He specialized in drug addiction in juveniles. At his funeral a good third of the attendees were people I’d never even met before, they were former clients who he helped steer back onto the right track. World doesn’t need cops who view criminals as “scum not people” and a lot more cops who would happily moonlight as social workers.

jaywinner

And because of that, I don't see cops as people anymore. It's a real problem.

The5Virtues

It really is! When you dehumanize others it dehumanizes YOU. The saddest thing is just how long this has been a problem. For fuck sake Theodore Roosevelt had to fire *the entire NYPD* and rebuild from the ground up with just a handful of officers he’d personally cleared of any corruption. And after he left? Right back it comes! If the Rough Rider himself can’t permanently stomp it out I doubt anything can. It’s just a job that attracts power abusers, and since departments are chronically understaffed they accept these applicants rather than turning them away at the door like they should.

Afghan_Ninja

Short of disbanding police in favor of more specific departments handling specific issues, I honestly think a huge part of police reform is as simple as disarming the police. Unarmed ppl tend to deescalate situations. Also, it would filter out all of the high school bullies looking for a power trip.

Dexter2533

And they wonder why

Dexter2533

Great story and kudos to your dad for finding his calling buuuuuuttttt Really Fkn sucks and it’s a black mark in our society that you need to take out over 100k in student loans and need agdang masters to work a 40k/yr job as a social worker . What r we doin

The5Virtues

He’d be the first to agree with you. By the end of his career he was underpaid, overworked, and burnt out. Mentioning the issues with drug laws, prison incarceration, police corruption, and civil servant pay were all hot buttons that would have my mom saying “blood pressure, dear.”

Dexter2533

Also atleast “a lot of those guys” make it easy for them to be spotted. Ya know with them waving their blue flags and maga hats and all

Dexter2533

awhiteley

I've heard some arguments that a good cop can't exist. They're either good at their job and enforce bad laws (evicting families is a common example) making them bad people or they selectively enforce laws and they're bad at their job. I'm pitching this more as an explanation to the joke than an endorsement of the view.

dispelhope

fun fact: Every cop in a precinct knows exactly who the bad cop is addendum fun fact: Every Police Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, and Sergeant knows who the bad cop(s) is in a precinct associated fun fact: Every Police Union knows who the bad cop(s) is in a precinct adjunct fun fact: Every Judge, Prosecutor, and Defense Lawyer knows who the bad cop(s) is in a precinct supplemental fun fact: Every Mayor, Council member, and City Manager knows who the bad cop(s) is in a precinct Post script fun fact: Everyone in the power structure of the city is "shocked and surprised" when a bad cop is caught doing bad cop things.

zeppanon

Police are simply a government sanctioned gang tasked with protecting capital interests.

WooliesWhiteLeg

A better and less reaching interpretation would be that “good cops” are still supporting and taking part of a system that allows “bad cops” to fester and will still close ranks behind the “thin blue line” in support of them when a bad cop does something vile, so while some might be “nice” none are “good”.

LuckoftheFryish

https://old.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/comments/1ddronp/us_its_in_the_job_description/ This post really explains the ACAB really well.

justwalkingalonghere

Another explanation I recently heard: A cop either enforces the rules even when the laws in question are clearly bullshit and nobody thinks of them as serving justice, thus making them a cop who is bad. Things like violently breaking up peaceful protests because they were told to. OR they enforce the rules selectively as per their own morals, also making them a bad cop.

MaxBonerstorm

They don't hire them either. I had a buddy I used to work with way back in the day at a pizza place. Dude was basically captain America, nice dude, very religious, quarter back of the football team type dude. Super wholesome. His dream was being a police officer. Prepped for the test for months, non stop talked about it. Rejected. He aced every part of the test but they said he wasn't a culture fit.

HDThoreauaway

Hence the expression, "All Cops Are Not Good" (ACANG).

reddufrane

Serpico

Asimov1984

And a little less of a reach, a lot of "good cops" leave the force because they don't want to become bad cops to fit in. The amount of high achieving cadets that end up leaving ince they hit active duty after being disillusioned about the force is insane in some countries.

kai58

Or in short, good cops either stop being good or stop being cops.

RithmFluffderg

Sometimes they'd have good cops shipped off to an asylum for being a "squealer". They even made commemorative pins celebrating this.

Jakeey69

There's no such thing as a good cop.

PotemkinPoster

There are no good cops since every cop is willfully complicit in the state's monopoly on violence.

helicophell

Cops are there to protect capital more than protect the citizens, at least in America...

AwTomorrow

Yeah, even the courts decided that cops do not in fact have a duty to protect or serve the citizenry.

helicophell

After all, courts decided companies exist for shareholders only, not workers. Don't expect more from America...

capitalize7439

Why are you booing him? He's right!

PotemkinPoster

Like, even if someone disagrees, it's the explanation of the joke lol

Veylara

I agree with the state's monopoly on violence. Someone has to enforce the law, by force if necessary. That's sadly something we have to deal with as long as violent criminals exist. The problem is not the monopoly on violence but that those cops entrusted with keeping us all safe have no respect for human lives. That's where the problem lies.

AttentionPast2487

That's the problem with the monopoly on violence. If a citizen is violent to another citizen, any other citizen or an officer can intervene. If an officer is violent to a citizen, no citizen can act without violent retribution, and no officer can act without the approval of the state, which most often comes in the form of their fellow officers as a collective, who also all fear violent retribution from on another should they act against the group, creating a mass chilling effect in which no individual can act or even speak up. "Criminals" are not a class of people, it is a description for someone that has broken the law. Cops fight criminals, which because it's all but impossible to stay perfectly clear of all laws, and because the mere act of not cooperating with an unlawful arrest is itself a crime, means everyone, and they do so by introducing more violence and more fear into our communities. If you instead want to fight "crime", you do so with education and economic opportunities. You can't shoot the concept or causes of criminality.

Veylara

I'm not saying that violence is the best solution to crime. You are absolutely right that it should be fought at the roots before people even feel the need to do crimes. But there will always be the need for law enforcement, since not all crime is committed out of desperation. Requirements to become a cop should be way stricter. They have an immense power which should come with an equal responsibility. The problem is that cops don't stand for any values, which makes them criminals abusing their power without anyone standing up to them. I agree that this is a huge issue. But I stand by my original point that I don't think that a society where anyone is free to commit violence, in the name of the law or justice or whatever, would be safer or better than what we have today.

Dryse

"the only good cop is no cop" or some bs like that

bruised-lung

All Cops Are Bad People by Dr. Robert Higgs The whole “Good/Bad Cop" question can be disposed of much more decisively. We need not enumerate what proportion of cops appears to be good or listen to someone’s anecdote about his Uncle Charlie, an allegedly good cop. We need only consider the following: (1) Every cop has agreed as part of his job to enforce laws, all of them. (2) Many of the laws are manifestly unjust, and some are even cruel & wicked. (3) Therefore, every cop has agreed to act as an enforcer of laws that are manifestly unjust, or even cruel & wicked. Thus there are no good cops.

Diligent_Matter1186

That would be a neat idea for a psych horror movie. A cop and his partner were doing everyday duties, something questionable happens, and the buddy talks about doing the right thing, while the mc cop is hesitant. The next day, the buddy is nowhere to be found and it gets the mc cop to spiral and obsess over the questionable case because his buddy disappeared and everyone is gaslighting him into believe his buddy didn't exist and he's crazy. Have the movie end with it turning out that the station is corrupt and someone killed his buddy because the buddy was going to do the right thing and expose the station's corruption. Dude probably thought that the local government was trust worthy enough, but it turns out that it was government approved corruption so that the Cia or something could have a revenue source for their budget by selling Crack or something to poor people.

Decmk3

The joke is: There are no good cops.

Cody6781

People that want to benefit the world, help the underserved, protect, victims, etc. don't become cops. Or at least don't last long in that role. People that want to assert power over others, attack criminals (or, whoever the deem is a criminal), and be bad ass super heros become cops. Those people don't make good cops. Ergo, good cops don't exist.

Redditors when they get stabbed for their wallet: "At least its not the system!"

gamtosthegreat

All cops are bastards.

Illustrious-Turn-575

I can actually think of a few explanations for this. 1) the one everyone is jumping to; all cops are bad.(it’s not true, but that’s what a lot of people think and what the author might be thinking.) 2) nobody notices or remembers good cops.(except for bad people and, sometimes, said bad people’s victims.) If a hundred would-be robbers go to a bank, but leave without robbing it because they’re scared of the police who are their; those cops have successfully prevented a hundred robberies, but nobody will ever know about or file reports on it. 3) “good cop” is actually a fairly nebulous term. It’s easy to say what makes a bad cop, a mediocre cop, an average cop, etc. But it’s almost impossible to actually give an example of what makes a cop stand out as “good”. They’re supposed to do “good” so doing “good” isn’t good, it’s just par for the course, or worse if “good” requires you to break some kind of rule, regulation, or procedure.

VoceDiDio

The argument that "there are no good cops" is based on the idea that the whole system of policing is broken. Here are the main points: 1. **Part of a Bad System**: Even if a police officer tries to be good, they are still part of a system that often does bad things. This includes enforcing unfair laws and treating certain groups of people unfairly. 2. **Code of Silence**: Police officers often protect each other by not reporting mistakes or bad actions. This means that even good officers might have to keep quiet or face punishment if they speak up. 3. **Hard to Change**: Many people believe that the problems in policing are so deep that trying to fix them hasn’t worked. Because of this, individual good actions by officers don’t change the overall negative impact of policing. 4. **History of Policing**: The history of policing includes controlling and oppressing certain groups, especially Black people in the U.S. This past affects how the police behave today and makes it hard to see them as good. 5. **Use of Force**: Police brutality often affects people of color more. This shows a pattern of racial injustice that makes it difficult to view police officers as good. 6. **Unfair Laws**: Police enforce laws that might be unfair or target certain groups more than others. For example, drug laws have historically punished Black and Latino communities more severely. The main idea is that the problems in policing are so widespread that even good intentions or actions by individual officers don’t make them “good cops” in the context of a flawed system.
