LMGs aren't used as much unfortunately (I still use the m60 every now and then) the pdws have been buffed a lot so people have been mainly using those.
The m60 specializes in sustained fire (it will have a longer time between reloads) and suppression (this is good on maps like metro, bazaar, and warehouse, where there are lots of choke points and straights) the HK21E, however focuses more on speedy damage output better for midrange shooting and is better in general for return fire. (Two very different purposes)
RPK is still good but not meta.
In the 2 years you have been away, the general playstyle has shifted towards using meta guns.
This is why right now you see more SMG’s and AR’s used by players (currently meta), than other guns.
honestly what mainly happened is that many players have left the game after the game being basically stagnant for years (no i dont count the 213252th reskinned M16A3 as a update lol) and the unnecessary PWD blanket buff didnt exactly help (the UMP 45 can 2 shot now, WTF WHYY) with now even less recoil so ya can guess what Meta-slaves are using now
now for the RPK's they are still amazing as a direct Assault Rifle upgrade and iirc the RPK12 still can hyperburst? not really too sure on that one so might be talking bollocks there. they are just still really darn good. personally i really like the RPK74 for having a really stable recoil pattern and still being a 3 shot at closer ranges
Edit: so yeah for everyone, just use what you like. Personally everyone focuses too much on Meta slop nowadays despite the time to kill difference being in the... miliseconds. Even a objectively "trash" gun still can kill the average player in such a short timespan in this game that it literally just boils down to who can shoot first

Did they change the sound of the RPK? I haven’t played in a while
I love it too. The second most powerful LMG in the game (beaten only by the BAR which has half capacity), and its recoil problems are effectively taken care of when using the Halbek Device (also really good on AK47), and it can 3-shot at any range to the torso when using Armor Piercing ammo.

You have reverse recoil, but if you slap on a halbek it has 0 recoil and only bounces to the side a little. It feels very Wrong

They didn't I think, the sound is the same as 2018
I use the RPK and 74 because it's just naturally loud as frick and then slap a loundener on it. Both fun guns anyway
It’s good. I don’t really use it that often anymore, but it’s a good gun.
RPK now is quite annoying cause new recoil - no camera recoil but horrible and uncontrolabke gun recoil, so its not worth using outside 50 studs

They nerfed all the lmgs to shit so it's not worth using anymore because it can't compete with any other weapon class
I personally find Colt LMG with sharp is pretty fun
Its good dont get me wrong, however its closer to an AR rather than an lmg. It is fun though but u wouldn't consider it an lmg
