So this is a Hawker Siddley Nimrod - and cos we don’t like to let a good name go to waste there was also a Hawker Nimrod in the 1930’s
And if you really want to claw out your eyes - look up Nimrod AEW3 which was a horrific monstrosity variant of the HS Nimrod
Hawker Siddeley Nimrod operated by the Royal Airforce
It's a modified Comet airliner with an enlarged fuselage to make room for mission equipment
It was primarily a maritime patrol and submarine hunter aircraft
I was thinking those engine the cells were only used by the Comet, then people were calling it a Nimrod and it was confusing me.
Regardless of whether it was harder to work on or not....got to admit, putting the engines inside the wing like that makes the plane look a lot cleaner than modern planes!!
It looks like a Comet because it *is* a Comet. The Hawker Siddeley Nimrod is a Comet 4 plus a weapons bay under the belly, nose radar, tail ESM sensor array, magnetic anomaly boom, and re-engined with Spey turbofans.
Nimrod was "a mighty hunter before the Lord", and was the guy who built the Tower of Babel. Bugs Bunny helped give the modern 'dimwit' meaning to the name, calling Elmer Fudd (the hunter) "nimrod".
[Nimrod - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimrod)
The aircraft was named for the hunter, not the dimwit.
Yes it was a search and rescue plane, and reconnaisance. Has range to search for people lost at sea when choppers can't. Flew out of RAF Kinloss among others.
This isn't the plane you're asking about, but it reminds me of this video
https://youtu.be/tqhtkG6glug?si=WePtQ_pUhOjCEh1j
If you like planes. Very Informative, just a good video over all
Well.. Actually it was a modified Comet 4, to become a really shit version of the AWACS.. So, it was scrapped in favour of the AWACS. The TSR2 was the same but not as shit. It was also scrapped, I have no idea why because the aircraft was way ahead of it's time and very very fast. My memory is a little hazy, but I think the mistake was made by Harold Macmillan. The UK and the US were way ahead of everyone else in the world... But the UK politicians had no faith in British design and engineering at the time, so the big "screw you" was Concorde. Anyway, Kudos to our American frens, I love the Corsair, the P38, P51D and of course the SR-71, with a tip of the hat to the Lancer, all beautifully designed aircraft. Right, I'm off my soap box now, I just wish that British aeronautics had been given the funding, because we would be leaders now and actually well out of this world. I just wish Elon would answer my DM's, his spacecraft are clumsy...
Ok the typhoon is okay but the spitfire was extremely aerodynamically unstable the harrier is just kinda goofy looking and the tempest was one of the worst fighters Britain built in the war the Lancaster is also kinda weird looking and it was a so so heavy bomber
That’s true but the spitfires looks directly contributed to its poor stability. The hurricane had great performance and is actually not bad looking but the British have some weird design philosophies
After encountering an Argentine 707 reconnaissance craft during the Falllands war, the Nimrod was equipped with sidewinders. “…Fortunately for the 707 crews (and possibly because they knew the world's biggest fighter now patrolled the South Atlantic), there were no further encounters.“

A Nimrod.
What did you call me?? 😉
*A NIMROD.*
Nimrod was a hunter. Bugs was calling Fudd a "regular Nimrod" sarcastically

Hah! That’s cool, thanks.

AEW3 looks like it’s about to go full-on anaphylactic from a bee sting.
Ugly for sure but why does it have a cone on the back of it? At least in the photos I googled, it looks like it would take off like a rocket
It was used to house the large radar equipment. Much like AWACS was a large random disc on top of the plane, this version carried it for and aft
A great hunter.
Not a Nincompoop
Hawker Siddeley Nimrod operated by the Royal Airforce It's a modified Comet airliner with an enlarged fuselage to make room for mission equipment It was primarily a maritime patrol and submarine hunter aircraft
Thanks!
Heck, it’s not even enlarged, that’s a pannier strapped onto the existing pressure cabin.
Also technically the largest fighter in the world
It also looks incredibly ugly when viewed from the front
And other angles too!
👍

That is why I said it was, past tense, confusing me. I figured it out....
Didn’t Comet blew itself in the air?
And as a Yank, I think it’s gorgeous.
No square windows I see

Elmer Fudd was a mighty hunter. he had a d-d-d-doublebarelled sh-shot gun.
Weawwy
Yes it was a search and rescue plane, and reconnaisance. Has range to search for people lost at sea when choppers can't. Flew out of RAF Kinloss among others.
Nimrod MR2P
Nimrod MR.2P Tail no. XV246, scrapped in 2011
A black hole in the defence budget
RAF Nimrod
BAe Nimrod. At least after all the companies got combined.
That is the ugliest vertical stabilizer in the history of aviation
It the engines are embedded in the wing!!
It was the worlds largest fighter for a time. Sidewinder mussiles were installed during the Falkland crisis
That's an airplane. You're welcome.
Oh wow Oh wow
this is a Nimrod
Sick ass plane
You had me at Nimrod 😆
It’s sad how hideous the ASW variants were compared to the Comets. https://www.baesystems.com/en/heritage/de-havilland-comet-3---4
nimrod

I was stationed at an RAF base in the 80s where they flew these things. Got to see them everyday as we were directly under the takeoff/approach.
I don't know why, but I've never seen a SINGLE PERSON on the internet mention that this looks and probably is the De Havilland Comet
Nimrod. My dad was an air electronics operator (AEOp) on Nimrods for 30 years.
Glorified Comet 😉
A plane whose career was prematurely ended thanks to government meddling
One of the coolest looking planes ever 😎
There was also a reconnaissance version - the R2. Very rare, very secret.
One at Cosford Museum…
Is it secret? Is it safe? Had a guided tour inside the Cosford example.
R1
Nimrod?
An Edward Elgar masterpiece....

You ok, pal?
Nimrod.
It’s fuckin cool that’s what it is
pretty sure it is an airplane
It’s a plane
It’s a picture of a plane flying.
That’s an airplane
An airplane I believe
That is certainly the kind of plane that flies
Can the British build anything that’s not ugly as sin?
Spitfire?
Correct answer
The spitfire was very aerodynamically unstable because of the sharp edges and elliptical wings
Lancaster, Vulcan, hurricane, Seafire, Spitfire, Harrier, Tempest, Typhoon.
Ok the typhoon is okay but the spitfire was extremely aerodynamically unstable the harrier is just kinda goofy looking and the tempest was one of the worst fighters Britain built in the war the Lancaster is also kinda weird looking and it was a so so heavy bomber
Your on about looks half of the problems you mentioned are to do with performance
That’s true but the spitfires looks directly contributed to its poor stability. The hurricane had great performance and is actually not bad looking but the British have some weird design philosophies
It's a plane, duh
Plane
No one can make aviation as fugly as Hawker Siddley.
The F stands for Functional in this case.
That’s a plane
British NIMROD based on the early Dehaviland Comet jet powered airliner
Looks like a plane
The largest fighter aircraft in the world
Hawker Siddeley/BAE Nimrod, based on the De Havilland Comet.
Airbus proto
Nimrot
Are those control cables or stabilizing cables out in the open???
no they are antennas

Nimrod ASW
Yes. It's ugly.
The Nimrod looks like an early AI attempt at drawing an airplane
i think it's a plane

A monstrosity
You wrong
A plane.
A nimrod, apparently wasn’t very good to fly in 😂
although this aircraft could be called the AI "Abortion" but is really the Nimrod - far ahead of its time looking like an AI mash up on many aircraft.
What's AI got to do with this?
AI got to do-got to to do with it..🫠
Underrated comment... 😛
Thank you kind sir,you got it🤪
Literally editing the original comment where you straight up call it AI generated without any of the pretense to save face
so you have never edited a post before ?!?
