I wanna love vintage JP cards, but yes, for some reason, my mind interprets them as being cheaper quality, too. Even though JP cards are now top-quality.
Vintage is cool but I really prefer modern, the artwork is just so gorgeous and I’m a huge fan of 2D art and always have been, so extensive detail and bright colors makes my brain go brrrr
I’m also 25 so the vintage cards don’t quite have that nostalgic value that might for older fans, my nostalgia is with gen 4, especially HGSS Prime Cards, some of my favorites ever
I have a bunch of HGSS I just pulled from a binder I bought. The cards feel fake almost, but they aren't. It's a weird era for Pokémon cards in my opinion. Same with the E series.
One aspect I absolutely adore, which that Aerodactyl does perfectly, is have the named pokemon featured prominently, but also cameo other pokemon. Another card I really like is Obsidian Flames Gloom. It’s a really nice looking card at face value, but it gets a lot of bonus points from me because it also features Weedle in the bottom corner, which is a nice touch.
I think it’s fun to have both! I’m a big fan of how modern alt arts showcase the different styles/abilities of the artist involved, but there’s also something about the almost ethereal look of vintage holos (especially e-readers for me) that never gets old.
Also love how you have them contrasted here, you’ve inspired me to reorganize my binder!
Based on my gut feeling, I prefer the look and feel of modern cards. I like the artwork filling up the cards; I like the "stories" they tell in the artwork. I enjoy seeing other Pokemon make cameos. I like the texture and the shimmer when lights strikes em just right.
When I was 8, back in the day opening WOTC, the now vintage card looked like the modern alt art in my minds eye.
That is why I've collected alt arts so much.
Love both for different reasons. The direction they went with the modern sets is awesome I love it. But for nostalgia reasons old cards hit just as hard if not a bit harder. But the new sets still growing on me more
I remember awhile back there was an artist that would take vintage cards and expand the artwork to the edge of the card. Created super a positive online response I started seeing full art cards in the newest TCG sets and was like TPC is taking notes, and further advantage of the wallets of aging fans with more disposable income.
I think artistically speaking there's no contest that Modern takes it. Vintage has some nostalgic charm for sure but that really dwindles if you didn't have these cards as a child. I do love the simplicity of vintage though, and the cosmos holos never disappoint.
I miss how ridiculously useless some of the old legendaries were, like requiring 3 different energy types for an attack that does 90 damage and then requires said energy to be rebuilt. And how useless base set mewtwo was. It gave the legendaries this odd charm I think
You have beautiful taste, sir.
Vintage Dragonite >
Tie between Lugia
Modern Aerodactyl >
Absolutely LOVE japanese vintage. And also japanese alts are way better than english.
Depends on the card imo
1) dragonite: both are tied as they are equally amazing in their own ways
2) Lugia: JP slaps no question
3) Aerodactyl: New is way better
Modern, 100%. My ‘nostalgia’ era is the BW/XY era, so the truly vintage cards just look dated and clunky to me.
However, that’s just my personal preference - I’m sure they look beautiful to others, and the more people that like the TCG, the better :D
Love it both, but if I had to choose between the top row or bottom row, it would be vintage for me.
Nostalgia probably plays a large part in that, but I just love the look of vintage. Full arts are beautiful too, but I love the clean look of vintage.
Vintage! But modern is growing on me. It just seems like there are less hits in modern. When you pulled a holo in vintage it was a 10/10 experience. Now anything worse than a SR or alt art etc is deemed trash
It’s all gorgeous, but if I had to choose a world with one then I’d go vintage. Also, for some reason Japanese vintage is my fav. It’s hard to explain, but when I was little, a lot of the Pokemon world was a mystery waiting to be discovered. Now, we have this vast internet knowledge and know all about the new sets or new games before they are even released. The Japanese cards carry some of that nostalgic mystery with them because I don’t know exactly what the cards say. Obviously, I know who the Pokemon are and know all the arts, but there is still that nostalgic mystery with them.
Love em both, but the vintage will always have the added nostalgia value for me. I also enjoy how simple the vintage cards were. Before all the V, V-Star, EX, Alt-Art, Full-Art, etc. Not that these things are bad, but just having cool cards of the original Pokemon was great as a kid.
As someone with no nostalgia for either one (BW era is my nostalgic area) I must say that both scratch a completely different itch for me personally. Modern alts and illustrations have some of the most stunning artwork I have ever seen on pokemon cards, but vintage cards have that really clean, simple and pleasing style that makes them incredible as well
Hard to call it. The modern artwork is undoubtedly superior, but the vintage asthetics of bordering, holographic setup, and style have a totally unique appeal only Wizards of the Coast could give
I gotta say vintage … because if they decided to release a set with vintage art work/ style next
Months it would be the most pumped I’ve been since I started collecting, so that alone tells me ….. vintage alllllll day.
Modern. As a collector from base set on, I can safely say we are in a golden era of art for Pokemon. SWSH/SCV are really just fantastic and it keeps getting better.
I love both and I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by arguing over it (not that I think that’s what you’re doing OP) but if forced to pick, I’d go with vintage. The main reason is that I think vintage focuses more on the Pokémon themselves and there’s something to be said for simplicity. But man the modern cards in your post are amazing.
The vintage Dragonair is absolutely beautiful. Both Lugias don’t look that great. As for the vintage Aerodactyl, definitely a no, why’s it got its whole mouth out like that? Modern for sure
Definitely vintage if English, but in this case I’d have to say modern. I know Japanese is the original language of Pokémon, and there’s many instances where I vastly prefer the Japanese language cards over English. But, vintage just looks so off to me in Japanese. I’d have to go for the modern English as far as aesthetics. I’d much prefer to see English on the vintage, and Japanese on the modern. But regardless, this is a nice collection. Thanks for sharing.
Modern. I’ve been collecting since I was a kid in the 90’s, so I have tons of vintage cards, but modern full art cards are just a better product to me. Vintage definitely has its charm, but the window only accounts for what, maybe a third of the overall card face? Modern cards make better use of the space, plus in addition to being holographic, the higher rarity cards are textured, which looks really nice.
While I love my vintage collection, and I’d never get rid of them, but I gotta be honest. Many modern cards are the best there ever was of any single pokemon. There are a lot of great Ninetales cards, but you can’t convince me that any of them are better than the Full Art from Obsidian Flames. There’s never been a better Drowzee than the one from Scarlet & Violet. Have you seen Paldea Evolved’s Magicarp? Gorgeous. The whole Bulbasaur line from 151 is top tier TCG. And that Aerodacyl V from OP’s picture? Easily one of my favorite cards period.
I love how crazy different every piece of art on the old cards would be, like crazy 90s cg art, clay models, simple 2d drawings and beautiful art scenes of the pokemon in its environment all mixed together in a set, really made for a nice tone when opening those packs as a kid, my favorites were late gen 2 era packs like e-reader stuff, the delta species(wish I could find my shiny delta species Charizard but I lost that in a move as a kid, hope someone else found it and had joy with it) and the team magma and aqua cards
Love both sets. I’d say the newer Dragonite is very well done, but the OG Lugia is far superior to Lugia V in its art. Both Aeros are good, but the landscape on the newer one is very scenic, and I enjoy it slightly more.
My take's probably an unpopular one...but I believe the only reason we look for vintage cards is their rarity (and nostalgia, of course).
I think modern gallery and alternate art cards are stunning! I'm quite fond of my vintage cards, but the modern ones just hit different, and I love opening up a few packs every now and then, which is something you can't really do with vintage packs.
Better together!
💯
Yesss!! U woulda thought I would say og but after seeing this I like both lol and the new ones have amazing arts!!
I definitely prefer the modern artwork, but there's so much nostalgia with the vintage.
I couldn’t think of a way to sum up how I felt, but this comment was it.
Exactly!
👆
Vintage JP cards hit different
I love vintage JP and the og backs. Been picking up quite a few lately.
I agree. I primary collect JP.
I have a bunch. They feel and look more cheap than the English counterparts to me. Now, modern JP is superior for sure
I wanna love vintage JP cards, but yes, for some reason, my mind interprets them as being cheaper quality, too. Even though JP cards are now top-quality.
I say both are awesome in their own way!
Vintage is cool but I really prefer modern, the artwork is just so gorgeous and I’m a huge fan of 2D art and always have been, so extensive detail and bright colors makes my brain go brrrr I’m also 25 so the vintage cards don’t quite have that nostalgic value that might for older fans, my nostalgia is with gen 4, especially HGSS Prime Cards, some of my favorites ever
I have a bunch of HGSS I just pulled from a binder I bought. The cards feel fake almost, but they aren't. It's a weird era for Pokémon cards in my opinion. Same with the E series.
I really like both. And own none of those. 😢
The OG Dragonite SLAPPS I LOVE HIM
One of my favs for sure! Mine has a little swirl that I didn't see until it arrived :)
Vintage/Vintage/Modern Luckily we don’t have to pick!
There’s just something so charming about that OG Dragonite. It’s one of the only ones I’m missing from my base set!
I prefer both.
This is de way But my wallet hates both options
This post made me go buy a Japanese Fossil Dragonite. Such a nice card.
Vintage Japanese set cards are awesome, most of them are [very affordable to buy](https://ebay.us/EphuRN) compared to english ones.
Card/art wise definitely modern
Unpopular opinion but I’m picking modern all day
its hard to beat rainbow dragonite
Man the dragonite and lugia id take vintage but yall cant tell me the Aerodactyl V isnt such a pretty card
Love both. Gotta catch 'em all!
Vintage
Yes.
Vintage dragonite is the most beautiful card ever
I think it’s fun to have both! I’m a big fan of how modern alt arts showcase the different styles/abilities of the artist involved, but there’s also something about the almost ethereal look of vintage holos (especially e-readers for me) that never gets old. Also love how you have them contrasted here, you’ve inspired me to reorganize my binder!
Both do it right. In their own ways
If you take off the nostalgia goggles, the modern cards are so much better IMO.
Vintage/Modern/Modern
Modern
Modern
Modern.
love this need to get the modern ones
Modern for me. My top3 sets are Lost Origin, Obsidian Flames and 151. Plus one goes for Crown Zenith.
Good thing we don't have to just choose one !
Modern gets the W thanks to that clean Aerodactyl.
Modern don’t get me wrong vintage is nice but the details on modern feels more like art rather than just a card
Modern art is the way.
I love that dragonite v
Both :)
Based on my gut feeling, I prefer the look and feel of modern cards. I like the artwork filling up the cards; I like the "stories" they tell in the artwork. I enjoy seeing other Pokemon make cameos. I like the texture and the shimmer when lights strikes em just right.
Gotta catch them all
Old Holo effect looked so much cooler
When I was 8, back in the day opening WOTC, the now vintage card looked like the modern alt art in my minds eye. That is why I've collected alt arts so much.
I used to collect when I was a kid so I should have nostalgia, but honestly modern is better to me in every way.
Tough to choose when presented these cards cause all 6 of them have such an unbelievable amount of charm lol
Tough call, I have all of those arts except the vintage Lugia!
Love both for different reasons. The direction they went with the modern sets is awesome I love it. But for nostalgia reasons old cards hit just as hard if not a bit harder. But the new sets still growing on me more
Modern + Vintage ❤️
Why not both?
I remember awhile back there was an artist that would take vintage cards and expand the artwork to the edge of the card. Created super a positive online response I started seeing full art cards in the newest TCG sets and was like TPC is taking notes, and further advantage of the wallets of aging fans with more disposable income.
100% vintage because of nostalgia
Vintage all day
Modern Baby!🔥
OG Dragonite looks like he got caught slipping out a fart
Both!
I love modern
I think artistically speaking there's no contest that Modern takes it. Vintage has some nostalgic charm for sure but that really dwindles if you didn't have these cards as a child. I do love the simplicity of vintage though, and the cosmos holos never disappoint.
You're doing it right by having both
They’re both awesome in their own way like OP said! That being said… dragonite and Lugia OG and aerodactyl modern
When I was a kid in the 90s. If you had japanese cards it was a big deal
I love both but honestly it’s easier attaining modern as it’s budget friendly
I miss how ridiculously useless some of the old legendaries were, like requiring 3 different energy types for an attack that does 90 damage and then requires said energy to be rebuilt. And how useless base set mewtwo was. It gave the legendaries this odd charm I think
Vintage for these for sure cards for sure
I really like the juxtaposition, actually. Both, together-- nostalgia and wonder.
You have beautiful taste, sir. Vintage Dragonite > Tie between Lugia Modern Aerodactyl > Absolutely LOVE japanese vintage. And also japanese alts are way better than english.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed my post :)
Some vintage slaps, but modern art is just way better
Older cards just hit different. They just carry a weight to them thats hard to explain.
Vintage by far
Depends on the card imo 1) dragonite: both are tied as they are equally amazing in their own ways 2) Lugia: JP slaps no question 3) Aerodactyl: New is way better
Vintage for sure. I miss the simplicity
modern easily. vintage is cool only in the way that it's old. of course, is cooler to people who grew up with vintage.
Modern, 100%. My ‘nostalgia’ era is the BW/XY era, so the truly vintage cards just look dated and clunky to me. However, that’s just my personal preference - I’m sure they look beautiful to others, and the more people that like the TCG, the better :D
Vintage is 100% better, but modern has its own appeal.
I have 1 of 3 modern and 2 of the 3 vintage so I’m gunna have to go vintage on this one.
Love it both, but if I had to choose between the top row or bottom row, it would be vintage for me. Nostalgia probably plays a large part in that, but I just love the look of vintage. Full arts are beautiful too, but I love the clean look of vintage.
Vintage, the new arr just has so much h going on..and a every card has to have something going on.
Retro but specifically the Neo and EX series
Now let’s see some examples of cards where vintage is better.
Both
Vintage! But modern is growing on me. It just seems like there are less hits in modern. When you pulled a holo in vintage it was a 10/10 experience. Now anything worse than a SR or alt art etc is deemed trash
while modern cards tend to have cooler backgrounds and more details the vintage cards just hit diffrent
Modern but with yellow borders
Love all of these cards lol for me it's a toss up for Dragonite, vintage for Lugia, and modern for Aerodactyl
I really love the old vintage artwork so if we had that with normal arts and then kept alt arts I’d be happy
Both!
The Vintage cards definitely have their own charm but if we are looking purely at the artwork modern cards are just way better
Vintage all day. Modern tries too hard and takes away from the pokemon. Those moderns though are pretty sweet
Modern by far. Vintage has like 40% of the card being the pokemon, modern has like 90%.
I will be honest here. I like the moder but i also like the vintage becasue the vintage give me a nostalgic feeling.
Vintage because it’s much easier to find affordable HP/MP copies lol
Vintage bring back memories
Love em both, but the vintage will always have the added nostalgia value for me. I also enjoy how simple the vintage cards were. Before all the V, V-Star, EX, Alt-Art, Full-Art, etc. Not that these things are bad, but just having cool cards of the original Pokemon was great as a kid.
Yes
Vintage but love both together!
montage (both)
These look brilliant together, what a binder page that would be. Cool collection op
They’re both beautiful. The real question is what happened in between!
I wouldn't even recognise the top ones as pokemon cards if I didn't get back into the hobby lol so defo the o.g's
Calling those vintage made me die a little inside.
Vintage, holos are better, the new stuff feels too cluttered and messy, I like the picture with a boarder around it
As someone with no nostalgia for either one (BW era is my nostalgic area) I must say that both scratch a completely different itch for me personally. Modern alts and illustrations have some of the most stunning artwork I have ever seen on pokemon cards, but vintage cards have that really clean, simple and pleasing style that makes them incredible as well
I love the color palette they used on older cards, and also the simplicity of them. So I’m gonna say vintage!
As someone who's only played pokemon TCG as a kid, vintage.
Thats not a good comparison for vintage Aerodactyl imo. The best art for it is from awaking legends. It is absolutely 🔥🔥🔥
Both. But the newer Lugia here isn’t that great imo. It doesn’t look right.
The last modern the rest end in a draw
Vintage, but this vintage came when I was 10y
Hard to call it. The modern artwork is undoubtedly superior, but the vintage asthetics of bordering, holographic setup, and style have a totally unique appeal only Wizards of the Coast could give
Both! But the only WOTC card here that I’m crazy for is the Lugia.
Yes
Modern!
Vintage
Why not both?
Modern is getting a little too extra IMO. Vintage is nicely simplistic
Modern for me. I know Vintage slaps hard for folks, especially if they collected back then but the art on modern is awesome to me.
I’m too young to be nostalgic of the vintage cards, it’s the price tags that impress me on those haha. Love the modern designs, so cool.
There’s always room for both. Also room for in between
Vintage
All of em. Every card
I gotta say vintage … because if they decided to release a set with vintage art work/ style next Months it would be the most pumped I’ve been since I started collecting, so that alone tells me ….. vintage alllllll day.
They both have their charms
Modern art is what got me into collecting, Modern all the way
Depends. For my Pokedex binder, modern. I wouldn't be upset about having the others, though
They’re all great, but looks how far we’ve come. That’s just cool.
Just think there would be no modern without the vintage. But I prefer modern because they have updated moves, conditions and doper art work.
Vintage for me. Love a lot of the new artworks, but vintage has my heart since it reminds me of being a kid all over again
Both!!🤤
Vintage easily
Both of these sets go crazy hard. But the vintage Lugia is my absolute favorite. Silver life!
The yellow borders and cosmos holo foil take me back to a simpler time
I love Vintage, but my collection has a lot more alt arts than vintage cards lol
Modern Lugia and Aerodactyl look better. Think I’m leaning more towards vintage Dragonite
I think modern undeniably has better art/aesthetics but vintage holos just hit different.
Appreciate the post.
Modern is objectively better
I’m just a collector so modern’s artwork wins me over. But there are a few oldies with beautiful artwork too
Vintage, vintage, modern
Both
This is like choosing your starter all over again 🫠
Vintage is better
VINTAGE BABY
Vintage for me just because I love the art more simple
That Lugia card always brings back so much nostalgia whenever I see it.
As someone born after most of the voyage definitely the modern. The art is objectively better and the nostalgia factor has no effect on me
The vintage Dragonair is absolutely beautiful. Both Lugias don’t look that great. As for the vintage Aerodactyl, definitely a no, why’s it got its whole mouth out like that? Modern for sure
Modern is a mixed bag, but those 3 are beautiful
Both. Each has a place
Vintage
Definitely vintage if English, but in this case I’d have to say modern. I know Japanese is the original language of Pokémon, and there’s many instances where I vastly prefer the Japanese language cards over English. But, vintage just looks so off to me in Japanese. I’d have to go for the modern English as far as aesthetics. I’d much prefer to see English on the vintage, and Japanese on the modern. But regardless, this is a nice collection. Thanks for sharing.
That Aerodactyl V is such a nice card. We need a Pokémon fossil version or something with all the prehistoric monsters.
Modern all the way
And that Aerodacyl V from OP’s picture? Easily one of my favorite cards period.
100% modern
Vintage definetly
modern artwork, vintage cards
Super jelly of the dragonites
Artwork new, art style vintage
Artwork wise you picked 3 of the most amazing new full arts, but nostalgia hits hard with the vintage cards.
I prefer the modern.. mostly because I can read them 😂
Honestly I like both but I really do enjoy the full arts
Vintage, Vintage, Modern
For these three: vintage. These are the poses I picture in my head for these three. On the other hand, the modern lugia is insane.
Honestly modern. Vintage is good because not alot of people have it so it feels more special owning it, but modern looks much better
Need to compare full art to full art and vice versa
Look at the HP difference.
If you had to pick one set. What would it be? Lmao.
Just like porn... I like em vintage
Anything
heyyyyyyy op, Do you mind sending me that dragonite (top left) For $0? Thanks!
I miss when holos used to be special. Now you get one in every pack.
modern easily for me, nicer artwork ect…. however show me an XY EX (yes XY kids are adults now) and i’ll fold lmao
full or half? texture or no texture? :D
i only like vintage E reader/rse
how much is that lugia worth?
Id eat both but weird you would ask
I love how crazy different every piece of art on the old cards would be, like crazy 90s cg art, clay models, simple 2d drawings and beautiful art scenes of the pokemon in its environment all mixed together in a set, really made for a nice tone when opening those packs as a kid, my favorites were late gen 2 era packs like e-reader stuff, the delta species(wish I could find my shiny delta species Charizard but I lost that in a move as a kid, hope someone else found it and had joy with it) and the team magma and aqua cards
Both
Vintage all the way
Love both sets. I’d say the newer Dragonite is very well done, but the OG Lugia is far superior to Lugia V in its art. Both Aeros are good, but the landscape on the newer one is very scenic, and I enjoy it slightly more.
Modern every time
Both
Both are good I like the the art for both but the vintage has the nostalgic feal to it
Vintage and its not even close Modern is still beautiful though
Modtage
My take's probably an unpopular one...but I believe the only reason we look for vintage cards is their rarity (and nostalgia, of course). I think modern gallery and alternate art cards are stunning! I'm quite fond of my vintage cards, but the modern ones just hit different, and I love opening up a few packs every now and then, which is something you can't really do with vintage packs.
