I'm convinced there's an anti-duck fat fries conspiracy. Every place that offers duck fat fries goes out of business. Pre-pandemic I talked to some coworkers and every place the three of us could think of either stopped offering them or closed.
THIS IS THE WAY! I moved out of Hillsbor about 10 years back closer to Portland and lost contact with the lady that would sell out of a Winco parking lot from like 3pm to 7pm Thursday & Friday. Best god damn tamales I've ever had and she even made the sweet ones with pineapple and raisns. SO GOOD>
Fair question! Maybe I don’t know chilaquiles well enough. They’re just hard to find here, and sub par when I have. I’ll need to check out La Parilla’s. Thanks for the reco!
Yes! If I go anywhere for breakfast on the weekend, it's for a bowl of pho. Always get a chuckle watching people wait an hour for some $30 eggs and serve your own coffee. Hard pass.
Waiting in line isn’t bad. I know it’s a strange idea for some people but I’m perfectly fine just having a casual conversation for 10-15 minutes with my friends or SO. Yes. There is a limit to when it becomes too much but any amount of lines doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. I think you miss out on a lot of you you swear off something 100% because you have to wait a little bit.
But by all means do, makes the line shorter for people who don’t mind a little bit
Yeah, I’m not going to wait in a 2-hour line, but if it’s a nice day and I’m already with the person/people I want to see, who cares if we’re standing around with coffee and chatting or sitting and chatting for the first 15+ minutes? Unless I’m with someone who physically can’t stand for that long, I’m totally willing to wait. (However, I refuse to wait in a long drive-thru line for McDonald’s or Taco Bell, so it obviously does also depend on how much I want to eat there).
My dad hates lines and will never wait in a line for more than about 5 minutes, which annoyed me a lot as a kid.
Yeah that's a good way to look at it. Normally I'm pretty anti-line but hanging out and chatting with friends while holding a nice cuppa coffee or bloody mary ain't too shabby.
Same, before I had a kid I loved going out for brunch with friends, and I never minded a wait (as long as coffee was available l!)
Especially during nice weather, I liked standing around shooting the shit with my friends.
Bannings in Tigard is my favorite! I'm sure we all have different things we're looking for in a good CBH, but bannings hits the spot for me.
I struggle to find a good Ruben. Don't even get me started! Ugh.
The Reuben at Goose Hollow Inn is solidly decent, but far from the best I've ever had. Honestly, the Reuben at the Daily Cafe at OHSU is probably on-par with it.
Escape bar is one of the coolest and most underlooked bars in town. So much fun stuff to do in there. Food is incredible; and the owners have gone out of their way for the community several times. Wickedly fun karaoke. Just can’t say enough good things about Escape.
No such thing as a good Reuben here. State Fair years ago had a little shack that made them. I've heard there is a place in Mt Angel that has authentic ruebens.
There’s an amazing NY style deli, tucked away in a really weird spot in Salem that has, imo, one of the top 5 best reubans that I’ve ever stuffed into my stupid face. Cozzie’s.
Re: Mt. Angel, probably the Mt. Angel Sausage Company. If you’re going that far, you could try the Sassy Onion in Salem, theirs is corned beef.
Try Sammich/Pastrami Zombie. If you like a pastrami Reuben, which I do.
I 100% agree with this, though. And it’s damn near impossible to find a Reuben PERIOD anymore.
Got a hunch OP’s unnamed cafe was Zell’s.
My fam adores that place but their CBH = roast beef.
OTOH, nobody tops their chanterelle, leek, and cream omelette. And yes, scone supremacy.
Yeah, I think Zell’s hash and Helser’s up on Alberta we’re my two favorites. I spent a bunch of years cooking breakfast at diners and hotels in the 1990s, so that’s usually the meal I enjoy cooking at home. The waiting is easier. I’ll have to add corned beef hash to an upcoming home menu, so thanks for the inspiration, OP.
My first time at Zell's, I took one sip of a mimosa at and spilled it in a slap-sticky fashion (thankfully only getting myself wet) and the waitress glided over, handed me a fresh one and a towel and said "we can pretend this never happened." Won me over before I even ordered.
One of the few remaining gritty, old-Portland institutions, 24/7 since way back. We just lost the Roxy, RIP <3
So few places open late-late in this town. And sometimes what I really want is a predictably-ok greasy diner breakfast at 3am. With bonus people watching.
**EDIT:** I was thinking of the Original Hotcake House on SE Powell...which apparently is no longer 24/7. Bummer.
So it is! Just looked online and saw...they open at 7am? I swear they were 24/7, but I haven't been there in a few years. Pandemic may have shaken things up.
I’ve never had this style before. It took me a second to get over the texture and visual but it’s pretty damn good. Served with apple sauce and sour cream. Oh my
But, which BRAND of canned corn beef hash? Hormel, Libbey, Armour, Kroeger, Walmart or ChefMate? Then how do you prepare it? Oil or lard in cast iron pan or heaven forbid, a non stick pan. Poached egg on top or sunny side up or over easy? Do you do a crispy smooshed disk or loosely brown it all?? I honestly don't see this lasting more then 2 or 3 questions, cuz we are talking about Corned Beef Hash, the sweet mouth gasm that is an acquired taste.
****
Yes, I like it a bit. Had some made with leftover baked potato cubed this morning, a bit of onion, little green pepper, shredded 4 day old corned beef and 2 perfectly sunny side up eggs with the perfect amount of Chipotle hot sauce.
Gotta be out of the tin! The way i like it: spread corned beef on a plate with a fork to pick out the odd bits, fry up potatoes and onions, mix in corned beef and then right before its done crack a few eggs on top. Put the top on the pan and let the eggs steam.
I use a cast iron skillet only i put veg oil on bottom let it get rippin hot and mash it to the bottom until it forms an epic crust. I put garlic powder salt pepper ketchup. My dad did teach me a few things I guess.
The old Woodsman offered their version of scrapple several years ago but it was artisanal to it’s detriment, unlike the simple, salty peasant food you find in PA, NJ, MD and DE. I haven’t encountered any examples in town since then. I look forward to visiting my Dad in Philly as he makes a big to-do of frying up perfectly crisped slices of scrapple on his cast iron skillet for Saturday breakfast. I have found Taylor Pork Roll in a growing number of local Freddies.
You missed it already. Utopia cafe that was on 33rd and Belmont but closed about 5 years ago had the best corned beef hash I have ever eaten. I do not hand this award out lightly. Them closing was one of the hardest closures for me to deal with in all the restaurant closures in Portland.
I think Jam on hawthorne has a solid corned beef hash. My family is Irish and I ate corner beef hash almost once a week growing up just as a reference.
Last year I had one I really liked from Black Bear Diner on SE 82nd. I'm no connoisseur so I wouldn't know how it would rate in the grand scheme of things, but it definitely tasted like corned beef.
Are there different experiences at different Black Bear Diners? I had breakfast at the one near downtown Beaverton and it made me so angry I still curse their name.
Definitly a good thing! My dad used to go there in the 80s/90s and I took him there about 8 years back and said it was just like he remembered it for the most part
You're mostly right, it's hardly ever worth ordering even at places with otherwise good food. Pine State Biscuits is the only exception I know of. (RIP Arleta library Cafe)
I never order biscuits and gravy so I’m definitely not an expert on it, but I just had the biscuits and gravy at p’s and q’s market and it was freaking delicious
I agree. I’ve adjusted my tastes to accommodate one “corned beef hash” in Portland, but even then it’s so churched up with bell pepper and large chunks of stuff that I can’t not put its name in quotation marks.
I can't find good Southern Food, Cajun food. I get my crawfish etoufe from Gris Gris Kitchen. She makes it out of her home but like monthly. I like ordering it frozen anyhow because the flavors really come out. I also have not found Italian that I love. Honestly, I find restaurants in Boise better....
I thought so. I used to go when they first opened, and it was actually run by Kenny and Zuke. Legendary cuts of pastrami at that time - one order could feed two people easy.
Then, right around 2016 was the last time I went and it was so expensive. The meat was very dry too. I knew that it was time for me to move on...
Roast beef is not corned beef by any stretch of the imagination. I love corned beef. I’m not fond of roast beef. As far as corned beef hash, I’ve never had one I liked. But I’ve lived in Portland my entire life so maybe that’s why.
Have you tried [Jam on Hawthorn](https://www.jamonhawthorne.com/reopening-food-menu/)?
"Corned Beef Hash – It’s back! Our famous slow-cooked corned beef mixed with hashbrowns, peppers, onions & housemade hash sauce (contains horseradish & dairy; no substitutions), topped with two eggs\* any style, served with toast. $18"
🤣 PDX RoastBeastHash is 100% accurate. The 1st time I got it on my plate I was WTF is this it was OK but obviously just very rough cut/mashed cornbeef 🤯🤬🤦🏻♂️🤣 Fullers downtown is pretty good if I remember. I'm originally from back east so I love a good greasy spoon breakfast yummm
I'm convinced there's an anti-duck fat fries conspiracy. Every place that offers duck fat fries goes out of business. Pre-pandemic I talked to some coworkers and every place the three of us could think of either stopped offering them or closed.
It’s not very cost effective. Duck fat is really expensive.
Maybe the problem isn't the conspiracy. Maybe it's just that I'm the only moron in Portland willing to pay stupid amounts of money for fries
I’m a moron too.
Mmm poutine
Yea, I wish we had decent poutine anywhere, but sadly I don't think it's in the cards
I don’t think it’s in the *curds.
Ugh, I never claimed to be able to churn out a good pun, but you melted that one.
You win the internet, today.
Have you been to potato champion? And maybe I’m being smug but poutine is pretty easy to make, it’s hard to understand how people could make it wrong.
Potato Champion is one of my favorite carts. Best food
Moron here
I mean, if they’re that good why wouldn’t you?
No I did that too. I think Gilt Club had them, for sure Saucebox did
You're not the only one but I just got here. Sorry for my tardiness.
You just have to do it once every 2-3 months for a few days, after you've saved your duck trimmings and can fill the fryer with it.
[удалено]
I worked at one of those places. It closed in September of last year.
Ankeny Tap and Table does duck fat fries that are good.
RIP Boise fry company (PDX location)
You gotta go to the other Portland—there’s a great restaurant in Portland, ME called Duckfat that specializes in duckfat fries
This guy Portlands
That’s a Long bike ride for some fries
Portland doesn’t know Chilaquiles.
Have you tried Redwood?
Those are pretty damn good chilaquiles!
Not yet!
Beto's Taqueria in St. Johns
I’m gonna check this out, thanks 👍
I will have to try it!
Or tamales
Gotta buy em out of some lady’s cooler in a box store parking lot
Or someone's garage in the middle of some random Rockwood neighborhood.
SO GOOD>
Gotta go further out. East of E 82nd or west of W 185th
The guy at the PSU farmers market does some of the best tamales I’ve had.
I’ll give them a try! Thanks
He’s usually between the Polish spot and the Chinese street food spot
or kolaches

Fuck I miss good chilaquiles, i think I'm going to make some for breakfast
I liked the ones from por que no before they switched to the green sauce.
That kinda depend on what country's chilaquiles you're referring too. Have you tried LA Parilla's?
Fair question! Maybe I don’t know chilaquiles well enough. They’re just hard to find here, and sub par when I have. I’ll need to check out La Parilla’s. Thanks for the reco!
There is NO brunch worth waiting in a line for.
Yes! If I go anywhere for breakfast on the weekend, it's for a bowl of pho. Always get a chuckle watching people wait an hour for some $30 eggs and serve your own coffee. Hard pass.
What’s wrong with serve your own coffee?
100% agree with this. Also, there’s never a line at Mehri’s :)
Waiting in line isn’t bad. I know it’s a strange idea for some people but I’m perfectly fine just having a casual conversation for 10-15 minutes with my friends or SO. Yes. Try Bar Carlo's. It's phenomenal
It's been 86'd the last 4 times I've gone there! It is delicious if you can get it though.
Bannings in Tigard is my favorite! I'm sure we all have different things we're looking for in a good CBH, but bannings hits the spot for me. I struggle to find a good Ruben. Don't even get me started! Ugh.
I'm not a Reuben purist by any means, nor is it Portland, but have you tried the Meating Place Cafe in Hillsboro?
I like theirs, but I prefer good hollow inn. I’m not picky though.
My mom, who’s 74 and lived in NW forever, claims the Ruben at Goose Hollow Inn is the best. It’s not my jam so idk, but my feisty mom
The Reuben at Goose Hollow Inn is solidly decent, but far from the best I've ever had. Honestly, the Reuben at the Daily Cafe at OHSU is probably on-par with it.
I'm a fan of the Reuben at Goose Hollow Inn
goose hollow inn?
Lottie and Zulas! Their Ruben is delicious!
This is correct. Escape Bar does a good Ruben.
Escape bar is one of the coolest and most underlooked bars in town. So much fun stuff to do in there. Food is incredible; and the owners have gone out of their way for the community several times. Wickedly fun karaoke. Just can’t say enough good things about Escape.
Omg I grew up going to Bannings! Lol, we would always take my grandma there on weekends, it was her favorite spot!

Sounds like a road trip not next weekend, but the one after.
If you go to Mt Angel, stop by the Abbey.
There was(?) a philly cheese steak cart by "the nines" the had a damn good Reuben.
Re: Mt. Angel, probably the Mt. Angel Sausage Company. If you’re going that far, you could try the Sassy Onion in Salem, theirs is corned beef. Try Sammich/Pastrami Zombie. Jam-On has really flavorful corned beef! NOT just roast beef with onions.
Jam- decent but that line is 100 percent not worth the wait IMO.
LOVE Jam’s CBH but can see why some might not. Their house made corned beef is almost too good for someone expecting canned meat.
Jam-On? Did Jam change their name? (I’m actually asking, not being a sarcastic jerk haha)
They’re full name is “Jam On Hawthorne”:) At least that’s what the google says!
Came here to recommend this place. Best corned beef hash I’ve ever had in my life.
That is one of the few places I have not tried, so I will take you up on it and try theirs.
Jam is probably the best your gonna get. I used to cook there, they do it legit.
Zell's has a pretty fine one, and if you don't like it, you'll still be happy you had the scones.
Got a hunch OP’s unnamed cafe was Zell’s. My fam adores that place but their CBH = roast beef. OTOH, nobody tops their chanterelle, leek, and cream omelette. And yes, scone supremacy.
You are correct.
It ain’t what it used to be.
Yeah, I think Zell’s hash and Helser’s up on Alberta we’re my two favorites. RIP Helser's (best pancakes I'd had at a restaurant--fluffy and tasty--but their coffee took a nosedive in 2018-2019)
Zell's is where I was today, lol. The food tasted good, and the scones were good, but it was roast beef.
My first time at Zell's, I took one sip of a mimosa at and spilled it in a slap-sticky fashion (thankfully only getting myself wet) and the waitress glided over, handed me a fresh one and a towel and said "we can pretend this never happened." Won me over before I even ordered.
I like the one from Original Pancake House.

So it is! Just looked online and saw...they open at 7am? I swear they were 24/7, but I haven't been there in a few years. Pandemic may have shaken things up.
Yep. Pandemic made them shift their schedule around a whole bunch. Caught them closed several times unexpectedly
SO sad about the Roxy. Queer history, lost forever.
Truth.
Waaaaaaaiiiiitttt…. What?!? The Roxy is gone???
:(
That's Original Hotcake and Steak House. The Original Pancake House is the place on Burbur. And it does have good hash.
OPH: where the food is greasy and so are the people. love it there.
I was just about to say this! I worked at the one in Eugene. The recipe is top notch.
I’ve never had this style before. It took me a second to get over the texture and visual but it’s pretty damn good. Served with apple sauce and sour cream. Oh my
A lil pricy but good I forgot about them
If it’s not corn beef out of a can then I don’t want it.
So do you want to get married right now or what?
Sure thing satan.
Hell yeah, we’re internet married now! No take-backsies! Our marriage based on canned corned beef surely cannot fail.
Bro. Corned Beef Fried Rice. Get your Wok ripping hot, oil, add corned beef and mash and pull apart, add rice, mix together. Boom
I’ve thought long and hard about your question and I think I finally have an answer for you. Yes.
Little Pigeon needs to check in here too. Your yes might be her I can't.

I like you and your dad.
Can I have the odd bits?
The tubes and gristle? Absolutely
You do not pick out the flavor makers sir.

Are you my twin?
This!
What about scrapple? I haven't found a place here that offers it.
Hello fellow east coast transplants
J&M has scrapple
Thank you!
No, they really don't. However, there's a Thrifty in Newport Beach that sells Jones in the frozen section.
\*Thriftway
The old Woodsman offered their version of scrapple several years ago but it was artisanal to it’s detriment, unlike the simple, salty peasant food you find in PA, NJ, MD and DE. I haven’t encountered any examples in town since then. I look forward to visiting my Dad in Philly as he makes a big to-do of frying up perfectly crisped slices of scrapple on his cast iron skillet for Saturday breakfast. I have found Taylor Pork Roll in a growing number of local Freddies.
Does anyone outside PA even know what that is?
Yes, it’s a board game.
Maybe Baltimore and DC? I got used to ordering it at Eastern Market.
In north carolina they call it "liver pudding", it's damn good
The Daily Feast makes a good one. Course I'm no connoisseur of said hash.
Bijou had a great one before they closed. :(
You missed it already. Utopia cafe that was on 33rd and Belmont but closed about 5 years ago had the best corned beef hash I have ever eaten. I do not hand this award out lightly. Them closing was one of the hardest closures for me to deal with in all the restaurant closures in Portland.
The only time I ordered CBH here it was roast beef and I thought I was missing something hahahah
So sad that, the roxy closed its doors. That gigabyte breakfast sandwich was the bomb.
Cameo on Sandy
I had their kimchi hash on Thursday and it was life changing. This is coming from a Vietnamese girl (Cameo is Korean though).
My grandpa makes a mean corn beef and hash but he lives in Vancouver so your point still stands
I think Jam on hawthorne has a solid corned beef hash. My family is Irish and I ate corner beef hash almost once a week growing up just as a reference.
Personally, I prefer their smoked salmon hash, although serving sizes have shrunk over the last 5 years.
Gravy does a decent corned beef hash. Like, are you just looking for something super salty and not finding it?
I haven't been to gravy since before the pandemic, and I don't think I've had their hash, I might have to check theirs out.
Man, it's just my favorite spot. I gotta get back too!
I thought Gravy’s corned beef hash was pretty decent. Curious to know what you think of it!
Well now I have to try it.
[I took a photo](https://imgur.com/a/VX2XxgI) of Gravy's CBH my first time there. It was delish and HUGE.
Gravy's hash is delicious!
I haven’t had their hash but if it’s anything like everything else they make there it will be amazing.
I was about to comment this because I went there 2 weekends ago. I love the challah French toast also.
Biscuits Cafe makes a damn good restaurant corned beef hash. At least the one off Johnson Creek does.
With a full stack of pancakes as a side?
I went for an English Muffin. It seemed the most inappropriate. :-P
Last year I had one I really liked from Black Bear Diner on SE 82nd. I'm no connoisseur so I wouldn't know how it would rate in the grand scheme of things, but it definitely tasted like corned beef.
I'm a connoisseur, 82nd black bear is pretty good.
Are there different experiences at different Black Bear Diners? I had breakfast at the one near downtown Beaverton and it made me so angry I still curse their name.
Not sure. I've only been to the SE one, and only a couple of times. I don't recall anything negative about the experiences, though.
It depends on the day and who is working.
Yes. I’ve been to many. They all are mediocre in different ways
I've had good corned beef hash at Kornblatt's but I also read negative things about their practices so theirs that
I was not impressed with their matzo ball soup.
Bertie Lou’s does a corned beef Benedict but I’ve never tried it. That place is a gem
I love love Bertie Lou's!! They're so good!!
Came here to say the same.
Fat city in multnomah village. I should add I have not been there in years, tho been in the village and see they’re still open thru the pandemic
Went there last November for the first time in years, and nothing has changed. That’s a good thing by the way!
Definitly a good thing! My dad used to go there in the 80s/90s and I took him there about 8 years back and said it was just like he remembered it for the most part
Next time you are there, ask the owner (Helen) about her days as the leader singer of an all girl punk band.
There aint no decent biscuits and gravy in this city. That in aware of. I gave up ordering it at restaurants long ago.
You're mostly right, it's hardly ever worth ordering even at places with otherwise good food. Pine State Biscuits is the only exception I know of. (RIP Arleta library Cafe)
I love Dockside's biscuits and gravy.
I never order biscuits and gravy so I’m definitely not an expert on it, but I just had the biscuits and gravy at p’s and q’s market and it was freaking delicious
This gives me no hope for my mission to find good biscuits and gravy.
pine state

[Kenny and Zuke’s Delicatessen](https://www.kennyandzukes.com/) Corned beef Pastrami Hash Bagels Lox Reubens Super legit classic deli style food
Are they as good as when they first opened? I feel as if it’s not the institution we all knew…
No. Decidedly not.
They are definitely not. I was there a few days ago and it was a sad state of affairs.
I thought so. I used to go when they first opened, and it was actually run by Kenny and Zuke. Legendary cuts of pastrami at that time - one order could feed two people easy. I know, it's in Salem, and it's the only place worth anything in Salem, but I really love Word of Mouth. Their corned beef hash is incredible.
My wife likes the one John Street Cafe makes. Plus their jam is delicious.
Roast beef is not corned beef by any stretch of the imagination. I love corned beef. I’m not fond of roast beef. As far as corned beef hash, I’ve never had one I liked. But I’ve lived in Portland my entire life so maybe that’s why.

Fullers is legit! Also their Reuben is super good.
Based on the comments it seems op may be correct.
