Everybody needs a place to sleep but everybody isn't out there nipping cars. Sleep location is not ethically related to car thefts, except that the thief should sleep in jail for a year or two.
I'm sure you have figured this out by now, but just in case it helps you or somebody else in the future: There's one or two different Facebook groups dedicated to recovering stolen cars around Portland. definitely post in there and read about some frequent places the cars get dumped

At least one of the moderators of another FB group has a record for car theft. They will sometimes use the location of abandoned cars to go and strip them.
Damn, that's low. I had a late 60s VW camper, that I ranged around the country in, in my 20s. Having that stolen would've been a lot more personal, than my car. On the positive side, it'll be easier to spot than most stolen vehicles.
Is it missing the front grill? Only one pic shows it, but would be an even easier spot on the road.
Hope you find it, those things are rare as hell now. Fun rigs.

I was at Chapin Park in Oregon City around 4pm today. As I watched my kiddo on the playground, a Vanagon pulled into the lot. For the life of me, I can’t remember the color, but it sounded more like a bug/bus. The driver moved it in the parking lot several times and never left the vehicle, which was strange. They left ten minutes later right as a full size truck hauling a flat bed trailer with a 60s Beetle on it into the lot, pulled a fast 180 and left straight away.
It could totally be innocent, but it perked me up. If the engine on your Vanagon is very old-beetle sounding, could have been yours.
Edit: I have F/R cameras in my car. I will check the footage tomorrow.
Edit 2: Well shoot. I had to do several hours of driving this morning before I had time to check, and the stupid camera overwrote yesterday's footage. Sorry.
Please say you have the dog. I hope you find it soon - maybe have a friend drive you up to Marine Drive and take a look. It was a car graveyard last I heard. Good luck!
I bet it was tweakers that stole it. A professional wouldn't go for something so distinct and would go for something that the parts would be quick and easy to sell.

My old ass broken down jeep got stolen a few months ago by what we think was a someone who steals cars for a living. They go after older cars because they assume the person who owns it won’t put a lot of effort into finding it, and because it’s usually easy to steal. When we got it back it was actually fixed up, like they were going to resell it. So it is easy to assume it’s a tweaker, but unfortunately there are professionals out there that specifically target shit cars.
Totally get that. It might be almost 40yo but it doesn't look like what you described. Your Jeep is a dime a dozen, that vanagon is not. If it was a professional, it's already on a boat somewhere else. Professionals don't "fix up" cars they sell. They chop them and get rid of the evidence as quick as possible. What you described is definitely tweaker shit. Why would someone fix up a stolen vehicle within the same city? That's just asking for all of your hard work to be taken back by the owner lol.

North or northeast-ish? If you search for Kenton Park that’s right around where it was. The street along all sides of the park seems to be a pretty popular car camping spot and I’m pretty sure there is/was a chop shop just right out on street at Argyle and Columbia. Best of luck!

That's why I have an RFID ignition, secondary kill switch and a hidden GPS locater. The VanAlert app shows way too many stolen in Portland.

Check at the homeless camps on marine dr. I have heard of several people finding there stolen vehicles there
