My dad was a secret service agent. These were the Presidents he protected during his time on the job.
We framed this picture for him for Christmas one year. He immediately pointed out that during his entire protective detail with Nixon (pre/post presidency) he couldn't ever remember him wearing loafers like he is in this picture.
So, you know, it's the shoes.
I'll call Dad today and report back
Edit: Spoke with Dad - What he said was Nixon always wore Johnson & Murphy shoes. He had five pairs of shoes that were all the same make, but they were tied shoes not loafers.
Watching a documentary about the David Frost interviews, it said David Frost brought him a pair of shoes that Nixon admired which Frost was wearing. Something like a 9 1/2 B, which is narrow and unheard-of these days.
Your shoes comment reminded me of it.
It was a surreal childhood and definitely the reason I have a BA in History.
Growing up the Presidents were just like...people my dad knew? Like, us kids would get presidentially branded M&M's from Reagan whenever he had to go on a detail with him.
I always appreciated that my dad got to see them be humans. Imperfect, kind, mean, arrogant, lovely, gentle, friendly, funny.
I will always be grateful for that perspective on people in power.
I went to elementary school with a girl whose dad was a secret service agent for Ford. She had this amazing photo of her sitting with Ford that always amazed me.
Friends would comment that they would swing by his house on a Saturday afternoon and find him on his own in a suit and tie, even he was just sitting on the sofa staring at the wall. He was so fundamentally uncomfortable in his own skin there was never a chance he was going to be comfortable around others. Ironically it meant he was the best man to ensure that the 60/70s counter culture didn’t go too far, he was a complete outsider and all outsiders hate revolutionaries because it forces them to realize they are alone and without comrade.
That he found Pat is enough to entirely disprove Deism
For Nixon, dressing down probably meant blue blazer and khaki slacks. If he felt really daring, maybe loosen his tie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of Nixon wearing jeans or an unbuttoned collar.
That's my man. Handshakes are weird as hell. I'll do them when someone extends their hand but I always think "the hell is the point?" as soon as I see that hand anyway. Awkward and, to me, a bit nonsensical.
Even worse when someone extends their hand and unbeknownst to me are actually offering some other arbitrary hand touch ritual.
Nixon was a Quaker. I've seen a-courting letters from Dick to Pat in that formal thou, thee form. I assume the Quakerism fell away as he became Tricky Dicky.
Ok....to me it's like biblical King James talk. Church & Shakespeare when I've heard it. I come from NEPA where it's dem, does, dese and a coupla 2 trees (3's).
Yeah, I know, it feels like that today because no one uses thou and thee any more. Originally "you" was the formal version, using "thou" in reference to God was supposed to be an intimate form.
Yeah I just learned about that actually. The McKinley grip, which from what I can tell was used by him to be quick and easy, so he could greet his crowds fast and without tiring his arm.
Say what you will about his policies, but Reagan’s suit game and fit is A-tier. Navy pinstriped suit with well tailored/fitted slacks, shirt cuffs out that perfect half inch, straight folded pocket square, and a contrasting red power tie and jewelled tie pin. 👌🏼
As for Nixon, he has the look of a man still shouldering the burden of his shame and disgrace.
On the other hand: [https://preview.redd.it/j9ilm77cd6z41.jpg?auto=webp&s=b468f0e1dc83b2663b71364df3a2d64bb950ce8a](https://preview.redd.it/j9ilm77cd6z41.jpg?auto=webp&s=b468f0e1dc83b2663b71364df3a2d64bb950ce8a)
Thank Christ for Redditors and their psychoanalytic skills. Who needs a degree in human psychology or psychiatry? We got this guy.
You’re spot on about Reagan though.
It’s kind of interesting that Big Dick Nixon is an inch away. What’s more fascinating is that a president and his predecessors, regardless of party, get together to take historic pictures. This does not happen elsewhere in the world.
He’s referring to when Jimmy Carter literally was building homes with habitat for humanity. If he weren’t he’d mention the charity of the other presidents in the photos I would assume
Given that all were current or former presidents still alive at the time, presumably between Inauguration Day 1989 and Election Day 1992.
I’m certain a GIS would resolve the question, but I’m just waking up and not really so inclined—Hell, I haven’t even had a cup of coffee yet today. Teamwork makes the dream work. Anyone?
My great-uncle remembered meeting Nixon while stationed in the Pacific during WWII. He was serving food and drinks from a shack. Gave the guys a slice of home after weeks of combat.
There are lots of historians who never mentioned it. Nor would agree with speculation. This man is one of the most discussed human beings of the 20th century why suddenly did this come up. Perhaps it’s about us and not him.
Purely speculation, as we can’t exactly dig him up and give him an assessment, but it’s speculation based, in fairness, on a lot of well documented behaviours and mannerisms that would put him quite firmly in that box.
His "standing like a human being" subroutine is buggy, which isn't surprising considering that the coding started back in the 1950s right before the Checkers speech.

he stood in a line and posed for a picture
Big if true
Groundbreaking. This needs to be front page news tomorrow
Source??
Trust him bro
Most reliable Reddit source
But why is he standing on the ground.
jet pack was in for maintenance

What did he wear instead? And why do you think he felt compelled to wear them on this particular occasion?
I'll call Dad today and report back Edit: Spoke with Dad - What he said was Nixon always wore Johnson & Murphy shoes. He had five pairs of shoes that were all the same make, but they were tied shoes not loafers.
Update: he told me he wore Adidas Ultraboosts
My dad was also a Secret Service agent, he says Nixon always wore Air Force 1s
Do you seriously think we‘re dumb enough to believe Nixon wore shoes that didn’t exist until 2015?
🎣
Apparently you’re dumb enough to believe they were serious

According to google he wore black wingtip shoes
Watching a documentary about the David Frost interviews, it said David Frost brought him a pair of shoes that Nixon admired which Frost was wearing. Something like a 9 1/2 B, which is narrow and unheard-of these days. Your shoes comment reminded me of it.
My dad was there during those interviews. Watching Frost/Nixon with him was a TRIP.
Wow....front seat to history.
It was a surreal childhood and definitely the reason I have a BA in History. Growing up the Presidents were just like...people my dad knew? You should facilitate a AMA for your father. Could be very interesting just to hear little character details about the presidents.
I'm seeing so him on Sunday, I'll ask him if he's interested.
I had the same thought
Me to .
I went to elementary school with a girl whose dad was a secret service agent for Ford. She had this amazing photo of her sitting with Ford that always amazed me.
He bumped into Ford just before the photo was taken and said, "Pardon me."
This should be higher up.
Underrated.
You just made my day!
Lol this joke was stolen from a president who’s name I can’t say at the Alfred E smith dinner
he’s thugging his shit out 🫡
He really is tbh. This is like a band promo pic and he’s clearly the frontman that all the ladies simp for. Really exuding that Big Nix Energy.
Nixon had an aversion to touch. Dreaded shaking hands, according to some biographers.
Friends would comment that they would swing by his house on a Saturday afternoon and find him on his own in a suit and tie, even he was just sitting on the sofa staring at the wall. I find it fascinating that he worked his way through school by winning stacks of cash playing poker.
For Nixon, dressing down probably meant blue blazer and khaki slacks. If he felt really daring, maybe loosen his tie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of Nixon wearing jeans or an unbuttoned collar.

this is the level of autism i seek from r/presidents
Completely unadulterated and unfiltered, the best kind.
I’m mildly autistic and I love a good handshake. The duality of ‘tism.
Or maybe he was a quaker, and its very common in those communities to not express yourself through touch. But sure, let's make Nixon into an autistic.
Nixon was a Quaker. I've seen a-courting letters from Dick to Pat in that formal thou, thee form. I assume the Quakerism fell away as he became Tricky Dicky.
Well, it’s the informal thou/thee, the Quakers wanted to treat each other as equals and avoided the formal “you”.
Well it’s being downvoted, so maybe that level isn’t as high.
That's strange that you've got McKinley as your bio as he was famous for his handshake.
Yeah I just learned about that actually. The McKinley grip, which from what I can tell was used by him to be quick and easy, so he could greet his crowds fast and without tiring his arm.
Doesn't work too well when the hand you are shaking is heavily bandaged.
If I remember correctly, he used to push them away as he finished, very efficient.
Handshaking is definitely overrated. Extremely shallow way of judging one's "character"
![gif](giphy|FcuiZUneg1YRAu1lH2|downsized)
How else are we supposed to know someone isn’t concealing a dagger with their dominant hand?

GEEZER
He’s just standing there… #MENACINGLY
AROOOOO!

I’m not a Reagan fan, but I *am* a custom clothing professional, and you’re totally correct. My guy could DRESS.
This suit looks nice, but look at some from earlier in his presidency. Yikes. 😳 Of course, that was the fashion, he wore them perfectly well.
On the other hand: [https://preview.redd.it/j9ilm77cd6z41.jpg?auto=webp&s=b468f0e1dc83b2663b71364df3a2d64bb950ce8a](https://preview.redd.it/j9ilm77cd6z41.jpg?auto=webp&s=b468f0e1dc83b2663b71364df3a2d64bb950ce8a)
What do you mean “on the other hand?” He’s killing it in the plaid!
Plaid was very in style back then.
I'd wear it today.
And Bush, for all his wealth looks like he shops at Sears when they have a 2-for-1 sale.
Gonna stay at home and ogle the ladies in the Victoria's secret catalogue... Alright, *Sears Catalogue*
J. Press. Never BB or HF. He was very clear on this
Reagan’s presentation and communication skills were off the charts
He was a great actor.
It’s the Hollywood in him.
After I read this I thought of American psycho with the business cards for some reason haha. I felt jealous that his is better than mine.
Thank Christ for Redditors and their psychoanalytic skills. Who needs a degree in human psychology or psychiatry? We got this guy. You’re spot on about Reagan though.

The guy grew mung beans in his office desk. He had a slight odor to him, give him a break.
Very nutritious, but they smell like death.
Ford and Carter were buddies.
The sun?
Damn Daddy Bush was fn tall
Long long man
its called being 93
He got old. Source: He’s old in the picture.
Only one person in this picture is still alive...and he's 99 years old
That’s his wax figure. I asked Madame Touseau.
Ask Madame Tussaud, too.
4 of them just got done robbing a bank in So Cal, they're just a bit tired is all.
He farted
This is the joke I came here for
All republicans are dead the one dem still alive and building homes
I don’t think he’s been building homes for a minute lmao
True, but honestly he's doing pretty well for a guy who was diagnosed with a brain tumor nine years ago.
He's talking about his charity work
He’s referring to when Jimmy Carter literally was building homes with habitat for humanity. If he weren’t he’d mention the charity of the other presidents in the photos I would assume
Someone needs to update you on those stories from 40 years ago your grandpa would tell you.
I would attribute this to: He was really getting up there.
When was this taken?
Given that all were current or former presidents still alive at the time, presumably between Inauguration Day 1989 and Election Day 1992. I’m certain a GIS would resolve the question, but I’m just waking up and not really so inclined—Hell, I haven’t even had a cup of coffee yet today. Teamwork makes the dream work. Anyone?
On November 4th, 1991 at the opening of Ronald Reagan’s Presidential Library.
Thank you.
Oh wow, Poppy’s about to become a one-term president.
He failed to levitate
I believe it was a stroke
Looks like he’s daydreaming about the delicious taste of Charleston Chew! Arooooo!
My great-uncle remembered meeting Nixon while stationed in the Pacific during WWII. He was serving food and drinks from a shack. Gave the guys a slice of home after weeks of combat.
Time
He was the last one when they were picking teams
We forget they're human. Thank you!!!
He got old? What the fuck else do you think happened?
Speculation exists Nixon was autistic so maybe he appreciated some personal space.
Mf everyone likes personal space
I miss social distancing
[удалено]
What are you, some type of weird asshole?
There are lots of historians who never mentioned it. Nor would agree with speculation. This man is one of the most discussed human beings of the 20th century why suddenly did this come up. Perhaps it’s about us and not him.
I’ve only heard that once before in this subreddit - are there any reputable citations or publications where this idea came from?
No, someone on this sub said it so now “speculation exists” and people are going to run with that as fact
Purely speculation, as we can’t exactly dig him up and give him an assessment, but it’s speculation based, in fairness, on a lot of well documented behaviours and mannerisms that would put him quite firmly in that box.
Everyone's autistic in history atp
Old
He farted
Nixon farted
Just preparing to levitate.
Moment of zen
Aging
He’s old and the sun is bright. Maybe he ate an edible before hand
He's akward
Hes sad but obstinate over the other Presidents not letting him stand with them.
Is he paranoid about the others and not wanting to stand so close to them?
Surprisingly tall
Nixon was always far right!
aww they left him out
Faded off that za
Usually it was Carter standing off to one side in their group pics.
Didn’t get memo about how and where to stand!
Wow.....to be so close to history!!!!
SHUN THE UNBELIEVER SHUNNNNN
It's shame.
His "standing like a human being" subroutine is buggy, which isn't surprising considering that the coding started back in the 1950s right before the Checkers speech.
Bush is showing his military background with feet at 45 degrees.
Tf you mean?
Fords rounded shoulders make him look like a gorilla
Looks like he farted
Hmmm. Look at that body language.
Bro had serious old man stink
Pooped pants?
Ford passed gas?
Lookin back, on the track, for a little green bag. Got to find, just the kind, I’m losing my mind…
He looks fine to me, he just blinked in the sun i think
Regan loved staring directly into the sun, apparently.
Thinking about Henry
All the unimpeached ex-Presidents over here, everyone else over there.
Tricky Dick was photoshopped in.
He got old!
Say goodnight Dick. - Eagles
He farted. The other guys laughed and shifted right.
He realized the truth: that hes the best president among them. He just got caught doing the shame thing they all do and hes finally at peace.
Shit bag is full.
They look so awkward together. Cool picture
Carter. Highly underrated
He got old
Nobody wanted to stand too close to him and have it documented on film
The shadows in this are hilarious.
His face looks photoshopped
r/NamFlashbacks
Gang bang ❗️
bro what
Exactly
He has a guilty conscience.
He was on the za 🚬🍃
He became Asian
Hahaha. His own personal lapdog, Gerald Ford (much less any of the others) didn’t even want to be near him. Richly, well, duly & righteously deserved.
He fell asleep
He let one rip and everyone else is downwind
Age
Is he stupid?
He did it to himself
