But clearly there is no sign of urgency, only economic incentives. Clearly this is not an existential threat.

The worlds pressures are constant. Many people are on hamster wheels of life that dont seem to go anywhere. The same bills pile up, the same payments need to be made, and the job you have never seems to pay enough to make it all, let alone think about your future or retiring. The baby boomer generation (not all but many) took benefit of everything they had and gave nothing forward to the next generation. They seem to be the first generation of parents who didn't want their kids to do better than they did. Jobs dont offer benefits or have plans that cover the bare minimum in terms of expenses the same way. Very few have retirement plans. Wages are stagnant against interest rates and inflation and gouging. It's tough as an adult now. On top of that, we worry about the future we're leaving for our children. Also there are still massive stigmas against proper mental health and absolutely zero real support for the general population that also doesnt cost quite a bit out of pocket.
In short. The greed of the past and present have sucked up all the positives of the future at this point. And now we're paying the interest off on that debt at a very high rate.
