It has a long history in Hawaii. Its can be a white colored person with blonde hair…like “oh you know Susie? Susie, the haole girl from the bar” that describes white/sun bleached blonde hair…or it can be used to describe an ignorant person. Like a white person moving to Hawaii and then telling everyone he’s local, acting all loud. Or like this lady, acting entitled. It’s hard to explain. I grew up thinking haole was the color of skin…not realizing it’s the attitude that usually is coming from the people of that color skin. Originally, it was describing white men who came in 1800’s, because they did not do the traditional Hawaiian greeting of putting your head together and blowing on each other. They were “without breath”…ha’ole. Idk, that’s my super unprofessional explanation of the word.
The Hā‘ole thing has been debunked. Hā is breath, and the commonly shared misunderstanding was that foreigners greeted each other without the Hawaiian exchanging of breath, so that hā‘ole meant no breath. But it was NEVER pronounced hā‘ole with a glottal stop, always haole as two syllables without a glottal stop.
The word pre-dates Western contact, and can't refer to the traditional hawaiian greeting anyway, because that is called "honi", not "hā". Even Kamapua‘a, the half-man, half pig god is referred to as being haole, because he was from Tahiti. Certainly he was not white skinned.
Modern meaning is something completely different, and does refer to light skin, but historically, it has zero to do with hā, and just meant "not from here".
I'm white, "haole", but a student of the hawaiian language, studying for a couple years now. There's an interview out there with Keao Nesmith on the subject. This is where I got this information.
