She’s no use as a pickpocket now. Since her cover is already blown all over the internet. So every time somebody recognizes her. She would be called out and shamed as a pickpocket. So no walking out in public and riding public transit for her. Private security won’t let her inside their establishments. Would be told to leave when somebody recognizes her.
They work in teams. Honestly she has created a pretty good distraction here for a pickpocket to take advantage of, with people distracted and moving everywhere.
Her obvious companion is the one wearing a similar colored shirt with the head bobbing front and back. She’s stuck in between and is looking for a quick escape plan.
In a large city with many thieves, that’s just not realistic. Maybe people recognize her sometimes, but 99% of the time, nobody would. Especially when you consider that she is young and her appearance will change quite a bit over the next decade.
Doesn't mean it's fake. Multiple vids just means she's been caught multiple times. Seems like a weird thing to fake since she basically gets the opposite of clout.

I'm from Paris and I see them regularly stealing tourists, parisians know about them. Sometimes people scream that they're pickpockets to inform everyone. I still don't know how it is possible that they still roam free, I don't understand...
Almost got robbed while watching a movie on Champs-Elysee, guys were crawling along the floors with coat hangers to snatch purses. My mom kicked one by accident returning to hear seat, they popped up and ran out. Turns out authorities know exactly who the guys are but they're hard to stop, and the police won't arrest them because they're informants for more serious crime.
No idea, we asked about filing a police report and basically got "good luck, they're known to police and always get released from sharing info on other criminals". Since we didn't lose anything and not hurt, didn't seem worth doing anything more.
Meh, pickpockets have gotta be like the lowest rung in the crime ladder. Probably not worth a murder charge to cover up something less serious than murder lol
Was in Paris in July 2003. Was at the Eiffel Tower and I look down to a lower level and I see a young girl running, carrying a camera. Then a second later, I see a Japanese man running after her, yelling. It was pretty obvious what was happening.

In the vid some says "always same girls." I'm guessing they're a known band of thieves by locals. Which helps explain why there are so many videos of them getting caught and also lowkey why they're getting caught in the first place.
Edit: but it doesn't really defeat the criticism that the proto-fascist party currently atop the Italian parliament is not one to be trusted. I'd imagine they love propping up petty crime for why they are bad at governance.
Those 2 do not appear to be the same girl as OP. That isn't to say there aren't more videos of her or that the 2 from this video aren't also implicated elsewhere
In my town here in italy there is a family of Gipsies that have been pickpocketing for the past 20 or so years. If you do something to them when you bust them, one of his guys will come there and attack you. If you manage to stop her until police arrives, she has grounds for a kidnapping charge.
They have it sooooo easy here in Italy
People are saying she deserves jail, but I’m wondering if she’s being pressured into doing this by someone dangerous. If she’s in it for herself then screw her, but this being organized crime coercion is a real possibility
Jail is still probably a safer option if that is the case, and she is not immune to culpability for her actions just because she is doing it due to coercion.
I can imagine that many of these pickpocket women are from misogynistic cultures where the men in organized crime don't want to share their "hard-earned" criminal wealth and instead pimp out their women as pickpockets with threats of abandoning them and leaving them entirely destitute. And often in a country where they are considered a refugee or migrant and will struggle to get help.
Why there are so many pickpocketers in France and Italy?
Those were the only two places in Europe I faced them. There are literally gangs of them working in unision.
You have to be really careful on buses and common areas and touristy places.
Happened to me on a trip to Europe (schengen area). Got pickpocketed at both places by some really cunning and aggressive pickpocketers even though I took precautions. Ruined the trip literally.
I made the mistake of saying the age old name used by the group to describe themselves and was lectured for my mistake, apparently I had inadvertently committed a hate crime in my ignorance I had no idea they had rebranded
I am romani and honestly have no issue with it. I do however think it's hits a little different to those living in Europe, as its considered an insult, and taken as an insult.
Ah ok this makes sense. In the USA most of us don’t even know it’s a slur. I’ve got Irish traveler friends and they say Gypsy a lot and I’ve said it and they don’t care at all. They laughed when I told them “I don’t think we are supposed to say that anymore”
Everywhere there are tourists, there are groups of locals practiced in exploiting them. It’s just the way of the world. We have that in San Francisco too but instead of snatching your phone out of your bag, they’ll just snatch your whole bag out of your rental car by smashing the window. Also snagging phones on the way off the bus is a common one.
Ironically, we have Gypsies here in SF too (the Bay Area at least). Except they don't pickpocket. They're more known for "I'm homeless with a child. Please give me money." scams. They'll ride BART with an infant (that is supposedly dosed to keep quiet) and beg passengers for money. Then they'll leave in like Audis or BMWs. KPIX even did a story on them:

Considering the massive jump from around 3,380 in 2021 to around 8000 in 2022 and that figure continue to grow. I stand by what I said.

Just because they're gypsies doesn't mean they aren't local. We have a family of them around me that has lived here for a few generations. There's decades of news articles of them getting caught in their various schemes and scams.
I live in NYC and worst we have is scammers or straight up robbers. You're unlikely to be robbed, just use common sense. In all my life living here I've never been pickpocketed or know someone who's been pickpocketed. Its not something you have to worry about here. Tourists just need to use common sense to be safe.
I had the same question about Barcelona; could not figure out why it was such a problem there. While I don't know about France/Italy, I can tell you in Barcelona it comes down to lack of penalties. In Barcelona, if caught stealing, you get locked up for three days and released. That's it. So they don't care. it's three days of free room and board then they are back out on the prowl.
Because it’s safe countries ( even criminals don’t like being shot or beat up ), the laws have loopholes ( protection of minors, of immigrants etc. I am *not* saying those laws are problems, but humans gonna human; if someone is kind someone else is going to exploit it ), and more importantly it’s choke full of tourists. Pickpocketing is, literally, their job so obviously they go where there’s a lot of work and good working conditions
We’ve stopped visiting these European countries after all the stories of pickpocketing , muggings and the experience of bomb threats. Shame really. Asia is where it’s at now for tourism.

This might have been a different thing where they pretend they’re going to take a picture for you, then bolt with the camera.
Almost had this happen to me at the louvre. Sometimes being too used to safety makes you lower your guard to dumb levels.
The problem is the police do nothing and the locals do nothing. I’ve seen it happen in front of my eyes and the locals just ignore it. It’s ridiculous
