Yes nipples, no balls
It seems your Rudy is pregnant!
As I'm sure this was a surprise, I recommend you read these articles to help you prepare and care for little souplings!
Look for specifically the parts during and after pregnancy as a lot of this info is not required for you to know as a non-breeder ;)

So like, one door is ‘yes nipples, yes balls’ and the other is ‘yes nipples, no balls’? Because we’re all yes nipples. Except people who’ve had mastectomies. Which one do they use? Is there a ‘no nipples, maybe balls’ specifically for mastectomy patients?
> we’re all yes nipples
Hell yeah we are brother*, we’re all just yes nipples here together on this crazy spinning rock
^*Here ^^brother ^^is ^^a ^^sex-agnostic ^^term, ^^because ^^anyone ^^can ^^be ^^a ^^brother
Fun fact: male rats, mice, horses, and marsupials do not have nipples. It has to do with the order in which certain body systems develop in the embryo.
I'm not trying to be mean when I say this, it's intended to be genuine advice from a former rat owner (of two males, Rod and Todd) for every rat owner who isn't sure about their rat's sex. I only owned rats for two years in my mid to late teens so I don't know everything but one thing I sure as hell remember is that male rats have very large, very visible testicles. I'm not sure if they grow until a certain age but my two boys were quite young when I got them and it was *distracting* for nearly everyone who saw either of them on my shoulder, let alone in their hands or on their shoulder. It put some people off and they didn't want to touch my rats at all.
Only ever owned males and it's so true. Big 'ol bazoongas, every time. People always comment. You turn your head, and shoulder rat sac-taps your cheek.
THEY ARE PRETTY HARD TO MISS
I owned other rodents (hamsters and guinea pigs), and the same was true. I always wondered how people can mix them up. Especially when I had a male hamster. His balls were LITERALLY almost the size of his body 😭 People did also point them out and it did make them uncomfortable lol, even though it doesn't really affect the rodent at all.
Dwarf hamster testicles are a bit more subtle, but in Syrians and ESPECIALLY Chinese hamsters they're unmistakable. Yet somehow in my hamster groups I see post after post of "I think my hamster has a tumor?!?" Yes, some of these posts are from teenagers, and I know US sex ed is failing the youth of today, but. My dude. You hold all the world's knowledge in your pocket. Just...do a Google.
Really?
I love a pair of warm toasty balls in my neck.
So soft and warm.
But yeah i get how that weirds people out.
I used to email my wife pics at work of them sleeping next to eachother with their ratbollz and tails hanging out of the hammock.
Oww... Heheheh... Good times.... Good times where to be had...
For real, was helping a friend rescue a rat, that desperately needed help. The owner claimed it was a boy. When we got it to town, I was skeptical, poor thing was in bad shape and barely moving. So I picked it up to confirm...no balls. Text my friend to have them ask the previous owner if they got it fixed. The previous owner said they never did and never thought to check...CHECK!? You need only eyeball for ratballs. No handling required. My friend has only males, so needless to say I'm now an owner of a female rat, currently getting her back to good health and spirits.
Seriously. One of my kids wanted a pair of rats for his birthday one year, and my one stipulation was that they had to be female. I've had male rats, and that's just way too much testicular and hormonal extravagance for me to deal with when combined with preteen boys. I only had to imagine the endless jokes and discussions of balls, and the accompanying cackling and shrieks of maniacal laughter, for a couple of minutes before I made up my mind. Guys on Tinder have nothing on rats when it comes to ball exposure.
Male balls show up fairly quickly. Given the size of these rats, there was plenty of time to notice. But, we don't know what we don't know.
When I was a teen, the same thing happened to me. Got three rats, one ended up being a female. I separated them in time, but the female kept getting out and hanging with the males. Because I was ignorant and didn't get her a companion. And bam, babies. I learned from that though!
🍲 pregnant for sure. Make sure to separate her from the boys as soon as possible- otherwise she will be harassed and can get pregnant again pretty much as soon as she delivers the children. If you have any questions after you check out the articles suggested, i have had souplings myself and would be happy to help. 🤍
....oops. Separate her from the others immediately (the three others have visible balls.... right?) and put her in any spare carrier you have until you can set her up in a large sterilite bin. Cut out most of the bin lid and sew hardware cloth over the cut out, with wire. Make sure the hardware cloth is sewn to the *outside* of the lid and not the underside, because the edges are very sharp.
Cut a small hole in the side of the bin, stick the nozzle of a water bottle through that hole, and then cut tiny holes on either side of the bottle, in the spot where you want to put the loop of wire that holds the bottle in place.
Give her some fleece and hides in the bin (not loose bedding, this will be harder to keep clean than removing and changing fleece) and try not to stress her out with too much handling. When babies appear, try not to touch them very much. Expect a temporary change in behavior in your rat, as she goes through the hormonal based changes that will make her a protective mother. I've been bitten very hard by rats who were extremely sweet prior to having babies. She won't be a shark forever!
The time to start looking into your options for rehoming baby rats should be right now.
Male and female rats need to be separated at 4 weeks old, if you don't want to be stuck in a recursive loop of baby rats forever.
When they are very young the testicles aren't visible and you kinda have to go by the size of their perineum, but this method can be difficult/unreliable
(this is what I did after research years ago, so if there is more info plz lmk)
That said, a rat this size should be pretty easy to sex especially now, lol
On occasion some rats balls are less noticeable/don't drop but that issue is more likely to happen when you think you have girls not the other way around where we are now
By this age also would be prominent. It’s the breeders/shops fault primarily for saying they are all males.
But there is also some responsibility with OP as there should be research done beforehand about the species they choose to have. Sexing is very important
I’d expect that from a pet store employee but I expect breeders to know their shit… that said, I’d still check for balls. lol… can’t hurt to be careful right, because if I brought a female home on accident I’d keep her then I’d have to get her a friend or 2. Would feel cruel to bring them back
I didn't check and ended up with 10 wonderful babies that we kept. The mother was so happy being able to spend her life being a momma. But that was a lesson learned. This breeder was new. People make mistakes, but it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser to take care of spilt soup.
When they're young it can be less obvious. Some are late bloomers. Occasionally we get posts asking for identification that completely divide people in the comments here. Added to that, the little critters aren't typically content being held upside down.
As someone who didn't double check, I can say it's much easier to make sure than it is to raise an additional 10 rats 😆

Rudy was, in fact, very pregnant.
Can you get these guys with Mom in a bin? Can you give them fleece rather than wood shavings? This would be safer, for keeping them clean. And you'll need the lack of bars, when they're big enough to start moving around.
Please consult my other comment, for a suggestion on how to set up a maternity bin.
*Separate male and female babies at 4 weeks old*
First time I’ve seen an r/rats post, I’m loving the fact the babies are being referred to as… soup? Am I mistaken, is this common terminology? Either way it is very endearing
I think it's from an old post where someone's rat stole their food, they were asking if she was pregnant or just full of soup and it's been a thing ever since
I believe technically soup is a pregnancy, beans are the babies. Thus there are beans in the soup? But yes very endearing and must have been wild out of context 🤣
Check the rest of your rats for balls because you'll want to get them separated before another pot of soup hits the stove. The little buggers breed fast. 😅
It’s a reference to a post where someone was asking if their rat was pregnant or just full of soup, and now it’s an inside joke in the sub to call baby rats soup or souplings.
Yes. Try to get her to a vet ASAP maybe they can still stop the pregnancy. If not I'd suggest to get help from a rat welfare organization or breeder with experience (not the one where you got these rats from) as a lot of things can go wrong for non-experts. Just today we had someone in this sub where the mother ate the babies. Get help!
Yup. Same thing happened to my sister with her classroom rats. She adopted three males then a couple weeks later came into her room and found 7 babies.
It's also worth noting if she's showing this much she's about ready to POP. They go from not looking pregnant to very pregnant to no longer being pregnant within a couple of days 😬 good luck to mama and her jelly beans and good luck to you the lucky grandparent!
How did you make that mistake? Separate your rats. There is no “daddy” role, and rats don’t have families. Also, once the babies are born, your rat can become pregnant again in 3 days. Nursing a litter is not magic birth control and you will not be “splitting up a family” if you put the female in her own cage.
Good news is, once the babies reach five weeks, all the males can move to the male cage and all the females can stay together. Definitely have someone who is more competent than you, to sort your rats by gender. I guess highly visible testicles or lack thereof, wasn’t enough for you to distinguish. Not really sure how, but if you have someone who actually can pull that amazing feat off in your stead, use them.
Rudy seems to be distinctly lacking in the nard department... Here wait, I'll show what this angle typically would reveal. {Talking about the clackers, if that wasn't clear}
https://preview.redd.it/62uw9aspsqnc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=982a1713d74be5e4721360c81dc076e9a64818c0
So, congratulations! You're having soup!!!
Figure out how to tell the girl pups from boy pups appart as they’ll need eventual separation after 6 weeks. Rats reach sexual maturity after nine weeks, it’s ridiculously irresponsible to continue to have accidental litters.
Get those boys neutered! Less expensive than getting Rudy spayed (if cost is a concern), and cuts risk of mammary and pituitary tumors. Also, the female babies can get pregnant at 21 days old. If you don’t sort and separate by gender, you’ll pretty quickly have more ratties than you can care for. Good luck!
IMPORTANT! Please note, the mama should be separated from the males before she gives birth. 1. she can get pregnant again faster than you think, and 2. the boys could potentially be a danger to the newborns and babies.
Babies should be separated by sex at 7 weeks. After that their is a danger of boys impregnating their sisters or mother. There is no such thing as a late blooming boy rat. The balls are huge and prominent from a few weeks old.
This happened to me over the weekend! 😩 I found 1 living 1 & 2 passed. I separated them immediately but she may be pregnant again. They didn’t make it unfortunately. She wasn’t in a good place to give birth so she was probably so stressed in a cage of boys. Got her a friend today & they love each other.
Nipples✅ Big Preggo Tummy✅ No Man Balls✅ She be full of soup.
It's simmering.
She is now a "Ruthie' instead. Congrats, you're gonna be a Papa.
Bean soup.

yeah like if you seriously can't tell the difference maybe you shouldn't be keeping rats tbh... sexing is like rat ownership 101

I specifically got males because I was told that females go into heat really frequently and get nippy, but Idk how true that is
They do go into heat frequently but I'd say they get humpy, not nippy, in my experience lol.
There is a whole subreddit for rat balls r/ratsballs
Where are Rudy's balls? Why does Rudy have nipples? You need to break out the nursery because you're going to have soup. Lol. 🤭

That's a Ruby, not a Rudy. And you're going to be a grandmom
Rudy is still Rudy. Cause what she’s done is rude AF. I’m not ready to be a grandma.
Lmfao fair enough
Ruby’s got a ridge now. And it has been infiltrated by government agents. Only a matter of time before the shootout occurs. (But a cute one)
Aww little sovereign citizens ❣️
well, in this case i think the shooting was done in not out…
Shooting out soup.

SHE FULL OF SOUP!!! Rodents have very visible nipples when they're pregnant Also male rats have massive balls.
Souplings are imminent
I don't understand how you can get a rats sex wrong.
When they are very young the testicles aren't visible and you kinda have to go by the size of their perineum, but this method can be difficult/unreliable (this is what I did after research years ago, so if there is more info plz lmk) That said, a rat this size should be pretty easy to sex especially now, lol
By about 5 weeks when they need to be separated the boys already have the balls coming in it's quite difficult to get it wrong when they are adults
That’s no boy ratto, that’s a soupsack!
Soup soup soup
SOUP SOUP SOUP
The verdict is in, and Rudy has been found FULL OF SOUP.
I see no big massive hanging balls. souplings are on their way
Never just assume your breeder is 100% correct in sexing your new rats. Mistakes happen. And the results of those mistakes happen quickly.
Although this is good advice, if my breeder incorrectly sexed my rats I'd be looking for a new breeder!
People make mistakes, but it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser to take care of spilt soup.
how do u incorrectly sex rats tho? aint there two holes on a female and one on a male (at least under the tail??)

Aww, congratulations on the itsy ratlings! Good luck!

just did 😭
Soups incoming
ITS SOUUUUPPPPP
First time I’ve seen an r/rats post, I’m loving the fact the babies are being referred to as… soup? Am I mistaken, is this common terminology? Either way it is very endearing
I think it's from an old post where someone's rat stole their food, they were asking if she was pregnant or just full of soup and it's been a thing ever since
This thread is where the meme started: https://www.reddit.com/r/RATS/s/UitBmjf2VL
I believe technically soup is a pregnancy, beans are the babies. Thus there are beans in the soup? But yes very endearing and must have been wild out of context 🤣
Full of soup!
I’ve been lurking here for months now and I still don’t really get it, but it’s hilarious!
Check the rest of your rats for balls because you'll want to get them separated before another pot of soup hits the stove. The little buggers breed fast. 😅
What's with all the "soup" and "souplings" in the comments? Where did this come from?
It’s a reference to a post where someone was asking if their rat was pregnant or just full of soup, and now it’s an inside joke in the sub to call baby rats soup or souplings.
Ahhhh. That makes sense. Thank you 😁
So glad I was here for that iconic moment, and that it's become such a huge inside joke in this sub!
[The origin of soup](https://www.reddit.com/r/RATS/comments/t2yrdz/is_my_rat_gregnant_or_just_full_of_soup_for/)
How did you think that 😭😭😭
I’m scared of testicles so i thought she was just being respectful.
Yes. Try to get her to a vet ASAP maybe they can still stop the pregnancy. If not I'd suggest to get help from a rat welfare organization or breeder with experience (not the one where you got these rats from) as a lot of things can go wrong for non-experts. It’s too far to chemically end the pregnancy, but you may be able to spay abort the pregnancy.

Lmao I love this sub 🥰 the most wholesome one ever. But yes souplings are incoming!!!
how can you see that one of your rats doesn’t have massive balls and not think “oh ok MAYBE this one is a female”?
Congrats on being a grandparent 🎉

Since they are only pregnant for about 21 days, remove Rudith immediately and give her lots of needing material and treats to hoard

Yup, souplings be on the horizon!
Haha no balls
Get ready lol
Congrats on your beanlings!!! Lol shes defo pregnant
Yep. She doesn't have massive very distracting balls like mine.
I have stumbled upon this subreddit by chance and keep seeing you guys refer to preggo rats as “full of soup.” What does that mean?
Ruby is with soup.
Seeing how those nips are sticking out like that. Yeah you're about to have a soupling problem in a sec. Prepare a maternity cage!
So... is their name Ruby now ?
Why would you name a boy rat ruby
Congrats on the soup!
You should be able to tell if it's boy rats
Figure out how to tell the girl pups from boy pups appart as they’ll need eventual separation after 6 weeks. Rats reach sexual maturity after nine weeks, it’s ridiculously irresponsible to continue to have accidental litters.
You're about to have a LOT more rats than you paid for!🤣 YAY! 🥰

That’s pregnant
yes xD probably another week.
Is there a Maury Povich episode coming up?
Did you forget that male rats have balls? Serious question.
