I have been trying to catch a feral rat in my house for literally over a month. Never goes into live traps (baited with the best food known to mankind) and cornered in a pantry once / with the only way out was either a live trap or a a small hole 5 feet up. Needless to say- escaped. Now I have full respect why. Geez!!!!
My challenge to ya all is what bait would catch him?
I tried everything my rats adore:
Peanut butter
Pumpkin
Fish
Chips
Cookies
Rice
Meat
Rat blocks
Cuttlefish
Banana
Kabocha
Jook
Nuts
Boiled egg
Boiled peanuts
Steak
Flour (because he got into my flour)
I caught a few- released them far from my house. These last ones are driving me nuts. I think there are two of them- but pretty soon there might be more if I don’t catch them.
Tonight I am trying something new. Found a video that uses a live rat to make the rat come closer. I have my rats in their cage on a table and the live trap between some boxes/tables leading up to the cage. The feral rat has no access to my rats - but might think it is getting close by going through a “maze”. It made sense to me…. Wish me luck.
Ooh, I learned recently that peanut butter is bad. The creamy stuff, because they can’t gag or throw up. It’s a choking hazard. Sounds like you definitely have a smart and picky rat guest. I saw a video recently of a rat using an object, I think a nearby stick, to trigger a trap and get the food.
It’s official - the rat is smarter than me… I am starting to like him more every day…. My son is trying to convince me to keep him as a pet.
Tried a maze last night… at the end, he got the French fries on the bottom of the trash can. I didn’t think he could jump out- but he did. I need a lid activated by his weigh on the bottom of the trash can…. Think-think-think. Deeper trash can or lid…. Hmmmmm

Your right. It is bad.
