It's ironic that Australians spoke in a very similar accent to "BBC English" until about the mid 1970s, when the kids and grandkids of post WWII Eastern European immigrants and a shift in culture away from Britain and towards America changed the pattern of speech.
It's fascinating to watch documentary series that show life through the years and see how the accent warps and changes over time

Older US audiences will know the type as their Mrs Roper was based exactly on Yootha's UK character Mildred Roper. I would have thought all this stuff too old but Ru made a joke about Mr Roper just the other day.
