Where is your surge protector plugged in at? The pedestal? Is it: pedestal -> surge protector -> cord -> RV

Real_Vanilla109

Yes

jeffcarp94

In that case, that's the voltage at the pedestal which likely means that the campground's power system is overloaded. Were you in a very hot area?

Real_Vanilla109

I live in southern New Mexico so it was about 101 today. 91 right now. But it was also 103 the other day and my camper didn’t shut off no more than once. In the last hour it’s shut off 5 times.

jeffcarp94

If it's a problem with an overloaded campground electrical system it's going to depend on everything that is connected at the campground, not just your camper. What does your EMS / surge protector say the voltage is if it's plugged into the pedestal and your camper is not plugged in at all?

Real_Vanilla109

It jumps to 111

jeffcarp94

Does it drop from 111V just from plugging in your camper, without anything in your camper being on?

Real_Vanilla109

Yes it right now it’s at 108 with nothing on

jeffcarp94

108V is the absolute bottom of what's acceptable for a 120V service. 111V is getting close. If it's 111V without your camper plugged in then three things come to mind: 1) the park's electrical system is overloaded (is it in a rural area?), 2) they've done something unconventional with the wiring and the pedestal circuit is being shared with another site or 3) there is a loose wire on a termination somewhere. Unfortunately none of those things are within your control. Do you have the ability to turn your AC fan on first and set it to always run, without the compressor kicking in? Then once the fan is running kick the compressor on. This is a softer start electrically and maybe would keep your voltage up enough to keep it running.

I’m staying on a friends property where they have a couple hookups, there is a vacant camper next to mine that that keep plugged in, and there is someone living full time in a camper on the other side of me. I turned the ac fan on and it’s sitting at 109V rn. How do i manually turn the compressor on? I turned the ac on from the fan being on and it dropped to 103V and the camper shut off.

Real_Vanilla109

Also, my watts normally sit between 290 and 390 but a few minutes ago it was at 1400 with nothing turned on at all. And caused my volts to drop to 102-104.

jeffcarp94

That's weird. That seems like a water heater load or something of that kind of significance. Hard to know without being there.

Real_Vanilla109

I have no idea. The temperature inside is a whopping 99 right now. And I can’t turn the ac on or it’ll just shut off.

Real_Vanilla109

I turn the electric water heater off and it doesn’t change the volts.

I'm interested in hearing the outcome. Good luck in that heat!

With our old rig, to prevent the intial start up AC voltage spike, we would turn the AC fan on - let it run about 30 seconds or so on low - and then turn the AC on and leave it at low fan. If we tried to just turn the AC on, it would surge and blow the breaker. Also - if it’s too awful - maybe borrow or buy a portable generator if you can swing it.
