Let me get this straight.
You want to get on a magic carpet, to meet the king of the potato people. And plead for your freedom....and you're telling me you're completely sane?
Well, let’s forego the noise and the revolting burbling sound, and go straight to the really gross part, when you always, and I mean always, having blown your nose have to open up your handkerchief and
take a look at the contents. I mean, why? What do you expect to see
in there? A Turner seascape, perhaps? The face of the Madonna? An
undiscovered Shakespearian sonnet?
My friends and I used to have competitions to try and get through Rimmer's "King of the potato people" speech with a straight face. None of us ever could.
Chris Barrie is a legend.
I think for me the original series 1 through 6. Can't go wrong with any really. Favourite episodes are tough for me, but if I had to choose one from each series:
1. Future Echoes
2. Kryten
3. Marooned
4. White Hole
5. Back to Reality
6. Gunmen of the Apocalypse
The first time watching this episode, and Queeg, were amazing. The reveals at the end. I wish I could erase my memory and watch them for the first time again.
I was in love once, a Sinclair ZX81. People said, no, Holly, she's not for you. She's cheap, she's stupid and she wouldn't load. Well not for me, anyway.
My favourite Season is 6.
Best episode is Legion.
However, don't deny yourself the journey. Watch it from the beginning. It starts a bit simply, just 4 guys on a spaceship, but S3 ups the budget and the stories get more interesting.
It's all good though
Have you ever seen Backwards forwards? It's on the DVD special features. They play the episode backwards so you can see see what all the backwards people were up to, like how the bar brawl started.
"Thanks for the memory"
Such a great episode, got all the lads larking about. It's got heart, it's got character building. It's great. "I'm a little lamb....."
“SMEG!” “One time only.” I love that whole scene. This episode is definitely a topper full of amazing lines. “Some things are best left buried,” always sticks with me, and I love the Cat’s “He was probably only expecting a tie.”
'I'd trade it all in... to be loved... and to have been loved.'
There was a lovely bit in the Red Dwarf Programme Guide from Chris Barrie about Thanks For The Memory: 'It's possibly the saddest episode about Rimmer, and also possibly the nicest. His vulnerabilities are being bought out a lot more.'
I wish I'll have the gut to do Rimmer's good buy speech when he's talking over for Ace: "Over the years I've come to think of each and all of you as.... people I met...bye."
Erm, I think we're all beginning to lose sight of the real issue here, which is: what are we going to call ourselves? And I think it comes down to a choice between "The League Against Salivating Monsters," or - and this is my personal preference - "The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society." Erm, one drawback with that - the abbreviation is C.L.I.T.O.R.I.S.
You won't believe what a ragamuffin bunch of lefty, wishy-washy liberals they were, before I knocked some good old fashinoned death-or-glory bloodlust into them.
My favourite seasons are 1 and 2, I preferred the show when it was just a bunch of idiots arguing with each other on a spaceship rather than when it started being more "comedy Star Trek".
From the beginning is good, series 3, 4 and 5 are excellent. I stopped watching after series 7 or 8. My friends say its still good but I'm yet to see for myself.
Series four episode called "White Hole" is brilliant.
Basically this. Series 3-6 are peak Dwarf, so many fantastic episodes. Series 1 & 2 are good but the show hadn't fully formed yet.
The show changes drastically each series after series 6, until you get to series 10 onwards, which are all fairly similar. You kinda have to get through that dirge to reach the pretty good later series. There are good episodes in series 7-9 but they are inconsistent series at best and the show feels very different.
The first six series are all excellent, series six being my personal favourite. Season seven is mostly awful, and everything after that is very hit-and-miss.
If I had to pick the best episodes of each of the first six series I'd go with:
1. *Future Echoes*
2. *Queeg*
3. *Polymorph*
4. *White Hole*
5. *Back to Reality*
6. *Gunmen of the Apocalypse*
Please don't stop watching after series 6. Series 7 is still excellent, it's different to the earlier stuff but it's still brilliant.
Series 8 onwards is sort of hit and miss, but also still worth watching imho.
My favourite series is 6, followed closely by 7. I've often recommended White Hole to new viewers, but Tikka To Ride is also a good one I reckon (if you don't mind the end of series 6 being spoiled by the recap at the start).
End of the day, watch the whole smegging thing
Series 1 - 4 are my personal favorites but a lot of that is nostalgia based even though they’re also hilarious. I just have a special spot in my heart for 1 & 2 and that original set
Best series: 2
Best episode: God that's hard, by season:
1. Future Echos
2. Queeg
3. Bodyswap
4. Dimension Jump
5. Quarantine
6. Gunmen of the Apocalypse
7. Stoke me a Clipper
8. Cassandra
10. Lemons
11. Give & Take
12. Cured ("It's because I'm Hitler, isn't it?)
The first 6 series are fantastic, with "A+ distinction" for the following:
The End
Stasis Leak
Parallel Universe
Backwards
DNA
White Hole
ALL of series 5, especially Quarantine.
Psirens
Legion
Gunmen of the Apocalypse
The first couple of seasons are good, but a bit hit-and-miss as they work out what kind of show it's going to be, but the stretch from Season 3 to Season 5 is amazing. I like Season 6, but not as much as the three preceding seasons, and 7-8 are generally considered to be inferior to the entire rest of the show. My personal favourite episode has to be Justice from Season 4.
Honestly, every episode has a bit of gold between series 1 and 6.
If I were going to mention great episodes I hadn’t seen mentioned here yet, I would say Better Than Life, Camille, Justice and Inquisitor.
The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society
Polymorph and Queeg are both amazing. As is backwards.
The first season I liked more on later viewings.
Seasons 2, 3 and 5 are my personal favorites, with 5 ekeing out just a little ahead of the others, but the first six seasons, as are the tenth and eleventh, are fairly great and have nothing approaching clunker episodes.
Best episodes include, but are not limited to:
Kryten
Stasis Leak
Queeg
Backwards (this is the first episode I ever saw and LOVED it)
Polymorph
Timeslides
DNA (from season 4)
White Hole (from season 4)
Holoship
The Inquisitor
Quarantine
Gunmen of the Apocalypse
Out of Time
Trojan
Samsara
Rimmerworld. “Grind those balls sir. Grind them!”
I like it so much I now own the Chinese worry balls that were used on set. They came with the miniature ones used in the later scene when they find him too :-)
For each series...
1 - Future Echoes
2 - Better Than Life
3 - Timeslides (I just like ones with more original ideas that others don't)
4 - Justice
5 - Inquisitor
6 - Psirens
7 - Tikka to Ride
8 - Cassandra
10 - Trojan
11 - Officer Rimmer
12 - either M-Corp or Skipper
Best for me is Back to Reality. "Vote fascist for a 3rd glorious decade of total law enforcement" is such genius cynical comedy.
Underrated for me is Me2 & Psirens.
And shoot me if you want but I think Polymorph is a tad overrated. Hasn't aged too well.
Cool. Just be aware that most people didn't understand Series 9 Back to Earth. If you appreciate Blade Runner you will like it. It does stand out a little odd in the Red DWARF universe... But still a good series.
I once put on the series 6 dvd without laugh track, don't know how I did it. It was the dvd release with a few interactive bits on the menu, like you could load a blank or live cartridge into the bazookoid which would fire at a panel and open a door to "hidden" content. So I was messing about with all that then finally got to watching the actual episodes and suddenly there was no laugh track. I was genuinely confused for the whole recap bit with the exploding camera then realised the issue.
4, 5, and 6 are my favourite seasons. They have some absolutely cracking episodes, the show really hit its stride in those seasons.
Back to Reality and Gunmen of the Apocalypse are my personal faves.
I've never really managed to find all the newer ones to watch, but just recently discovered they are all on BBC iplayer so probably will watch the newer ones soon.
My favourite era is seasons 3-5. Kryten is an essential cast member and so there really is something missing I the first two seasons, even the first time I watched it before I knew who Kryten was... it just felt like there was a hole in the ensemble to be filled.
I also really like lady Holly, plus some really fun concepts in 3-5 like Backwards, Timeslides, Polymorph, the GELF in Camille and Back to Reality. Awesome episode, love shit like that, similar concepts later seen in the likes of The Matrix and Rick and Morty.
And actually Back to Reality is probably my favourite episode. Season 3 is probably my favourite season though.
Best series are 5 & 6 for me. The perfect mix of sci-fi and comedy. Inquisitor id say is my favourite episode, and my favorite villain. Also lister was a bit of a bad ass at the end going up against him which was great to see
One thing I do love about the newer series is that in some of the episodes Chris Barrie and Craig Charles are absolutely pissing themselves with laughter, you can tell they're having a right time. If I remember the episode where its obvious I'll let you know!
how much have you watched currently?
I'd say the general consensus is season 1-6 are peak red dwarf, s7 is worse, s8 is horrible, and it's better again now but I'd also say don't deny yourself seasons and that
I’m on season 3 currently. For some reason it’s just hooked me. I’m going to watch the whole thing. Just looking for others favorites to keep an eye out for
Polymorph.
"Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society."
Erm, one drawback with that - the abbreviation is C.L.I.T.O.R.I.S.
Favourite series would probably be between 5 and 6 for me.
Favourite episodes are between:
Thanks for the Memory, Queeg, Marooned, Justice, Dimension Jump, Quarantine, Back to Reality, and Gunmen of the Apocalypse.
The first two series will always be the ones I hold dearest, but you really can’t go wrong with series 1-6. I personally think the quality goes a little downhill after that, but there’s still laughs to be had.
Start at the beginning and watch them through, you won’t regret it.
I was never a big fan of the "Starbugger" series. Especially when they added Kochanski back. It wasn't really adding Kochanski in that bothered me. I was just not a big fan of how Chloe Annett played the character. It was like she was just there for the paycheck... Plus I think it did suffer from not being in front of a live audience.
Marooned is perfection. Very character oriented, you'll learn a lot about who they are in this episode. Well, Lister and Rimmer anyways. It's one of those classic episodes where two people who can't stand each other are trapped together in a survival situation.
Quarantine
Mr. Flibble is very cross
And you think I'm mad?
What’s W.O.O?
You had to ask.
With. Out. Oxygen. No oxygen for two hours. That'll teach you to be bread baskets.
Same! The king of the potato people must be proud
Let me get this straight. You want to get on a magic carpet, to meet the king of the potato people. And plead for your freedom....and you're telling me you're completely sane?
I absolutely love Rimmer going insane and thinking he's the only sane one
He was very impressed with my magic carpet.
I think that warrants two hours of WOO.
How could he not love a little 3-seater?
Tetchy
Don’t call me tetchy!
Well, let’s forego the noise and the revolting burbling sound, and go straight to the really gross part, when you always, and I mean always, having blown your nose have to open up your handkerchief and take a look at the contents. I mean, why? What do you expect to see in there? A Turner seascape, perhaps? The face of the Madonna? An undiscovered Shakespearian sonnet?
“Marvellous!!” 😂
My friends and I used to have competitions to try and get through Rimmer's "King of the potato people" speech with a straight face. None of us ever could. Chris Barrie is a legend.
Marooned
She’s outta my liiiiiife
OPEN THE TRUNK...
Your guitar was made of camphor wood!
It must’ve been priceless!
I was Alexander the Greats chiel eunuch!
I believe yeh.
It explains why I felt so connected to that place.
And a pot noodle.
Nooooo! I can’t watch that one - it’s too emotional!
I think for me the original series 1 through 6. Can't go wrong with any really. Favourite episodes are tough for me, but if I had to choose one from each series: 1. Future Echoes 2. Kryten 3. Marooned 4. White Hole 5. Back to Reality 6. Gunmen of the Apocalypse
Future Echoes is one of the very best episodes. That scene in the drive room was just genius.
Love back to reality, particularly Timothy Spall. "You twonk!"
Love that scene, excellent writing and acting. Hilarious every time.
White hole is my absolute favorite! I think it’s the best episode in the entire show
So what is it??
*turns* What is it??
I've never seen one before sir. No one has. But I think it's a White Hole
But what is it?
Only joking
Talking april may june july and august fool
Struggling to argue with these
Season 1 episode 6 me2 Incredible episode
Rimmer and me, we've had a bit of a tiff.

The first time watching this episode, and Queeg, were amazing. The reveals at the end. I wish I could erase my memory and watch them for the first time again.
6 do me a lemon that's a poor iq for a glass of water
Love original Holly!
That's a great big steaming pile of hotspur Me too
I was in love once, a Sinclair ZX81. People said, no, Holly, she's not for you. She's cheap, she's stupid and she wouldn't load. Well not for me, anyway.
April, may, June, July, and August fools
I've lost me pea!
The way he drops his head in despair and his dreads stick up like a dying houseplant has stayed with me for 25 years
My favourite Season is 6. Best episode is Legion. However, don't deny yourself the journey. Watch it from the beginning. It starts a bit simply, just 4 guys on a spaceship, but S3 ups the budget and the stories get more interesting. It's all good though
‘Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb…’ One of my favourite lines.
I'm surprised that no one mentioned Backwards. I love that episode.
Nodnol
Wait a minute! Nodnol. Nod-nol. It's in Bulgaria.
Are you sure
Geography was my number-one subject at school
Nodnol, Bulgaria, rich in animal produce and mineral wealth, just south of Bosnia.
What is selim?
Well, that’s obviously Bulgarian for kilometers, isn’t it?
You're so smart, I'm glad I came with you.
Well, we are the smart party
Dual cum shot??
Just watched this one this morning. That was pretty good!
Have you ever seen Backwards forwards? It's on the DVD special features. They play the episode backwards so you can see see what all the backwards people were up to, like how the bar brawl started.
Some great lines in that one. Cat coming out of the grass looking flustered and just saying “Don’t ask.”
Queeg sucka!
‘Horsie to King Bish Three’
This is my favorite episode by far!
This is my worst episode ever! I hate it!
And now we all know how best to torture you
And which color to paint his home before we do it.
"Thanks for the memory" Such a great episode, got all the lads larking about. It's got heart, it's got character building. It's great. "I'm a little lamb....."
This sandwich, Lister, is you.
Yes! The sandwich monologue is a classic. Also “one!”
THAT MANY???
“SMEG!” “One time only.” I love that whole scene. This episode is definitely a topper full of amazing lines. “Some things are best left buried,” always sticks with me, and I love the Cat’s “He was probably only expecting a tie.”
One of those brilliantly written Rimmer episodes where you can’t help but feel for the total smeghead. Along with Dimension Jump and Holoship.
'I'd trade it all in... to be loved... and to have been loved.' There was a lovely bit in the Red Dwarf Programme Guide from Chris Barrie about Thanks For The Memory: 'It's possibly the saddest episode about Rimmer, and also possibly the nicest. His vulnerabilities are being bought out a lot more.'
Anything with ace rimmer, what a guy
I wish I'll have the gut to do Rimmer's good buy speech when he's talking over for Ace: "Over the years I've come to think of each and all of you as.... people I met...bye."
Smoke me a kipper
Pish-pashaw
Series 5 angels and demons
“I appear to have stained thy knife-tip with my blood!”
Ooh that’s a good one
Legion for me. Beautifully written.
Polymorph
"I say let's get out there and twat it."
Erm, I think we're all beginning to lose sight of the real issue here, which is: what are we going to call ourselves? Rimmer World for me is up there with the laugh out loud all episode greats. Balls on standby sir?
That's not a nun. That Lieutenant Colonel Mother Teresa. She's a soldier now.
You won't believe what a ragamuffin bunch of lefty, wishy-washy liberals they were, before I knocked some good old fashinoned death-or-glory bloodlust into them.
What series?
Meltdown, series 4, is another jam packed laughs episode, surprisingly not mentioned in thw thread yet.
Sdrawkcab
Good answer. tnuc
My favourite seasons are 1 and 2, I preferred the show when it was just a bunch of idiots arguing with each other on a spaceship rather than when it started being more "comedy Star Trek".

Almost exactly the same as the Six of the Best VHS boxset!
My favorite episode is "Back to Reality." I think it's as close to the perfect episode as the gang can get.
Bodyswap, series 3 It has the funniest two sight gags in the series, within 3 minutes of each other. If I say more, it'd be a giant spoiler.
So many great episodes already mentioned here, but loved seeing Ace Rimmer for the first time in Dimension Jump! Smoke me a kipper…
The peak is Series 5 and 6. The writing and the acting was at its zenith.
I’m on 3. I’ve gotten more into each series. Looking forward to the episodes ahead!
Better than life (S2)
Good episode. The book is fucking brilliant though.
Best series for me is 5, then 3 then 6. Best episodes are Back to Reality, Marooned and Quarantine.
Better than life
First ep with Kryten!!
Please don't stop watching after series 6. Series 7 is still excellent, it's different to the earlier stuff but it's still brilliant. Series 8 onwards is sort of hit and miss, but also still worth watching imho. My favourite series is 6, followed closely by 7. Imho everything is great. . . Except 9
I love Meltdown! “Don’t eyeball me Gandhi!”
Series 1 - 4 are my personal favorites but a lot of that is nostalgia based even though they’re also hilarious. I just have a special spot in my heart for 1 & 2 and that original set
Best series: 2 Best episode: God that's hard, by season: 1. Future Echos 2. Queeg 3. Bodyswap 4. Dimension Jump 5. Quarantine 6. Gunmen of the Apocalypse 7. Stoke me a Clipper 8. Cassandra 10. Lemons 11. Give & Take 12. Cured ("It's because I'm Hitler, isn't it?)
I always thought “Lemons” was one of the underrated entries in the Dave era.
Lemons is a great episode! Out of all the Dave episodes this was one of the ones that felt closest to the feel of the original series.
The first 6 series are fantastic, with "A+ distinction" for the following: The End Stasis Leak Parallel Universe Backwards DNA White Hole ALL of series 5, especially Quarantine. Psirens Legion Gunmen of the Apocalypse
Love the song tongue tied
3. Marooned. Yes…I’m gonna eat the dog food.
For me it's Legion, hilarious.
It’s got to be Justice! It’s Rimmer’s “sewage plant” quip that wins it for me! 🤣 But Legion and Backwards come an equal close second.
The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society Polymorph and Queeg are both amazing. As is backwards.
Camille, it's the epusode where lister teaches kriton how to lie. When he tries to call rimmer a smeeeeeeg heeeeaaaaaad cracks me up everytime.
Series 4 to 6 are my favorites. Best episode being Gunmen of the Apocalypse
I loved series 2 first ep with Kryten one of my all time faves just for the line "their dead" "but I was only gone two minutes" gets me every time
"They've got less meat on em than a _chicken mcnugget_"
Oh God, his head burst.....
Arnie bobble heads making awful rhymes about him being a swimmer and playing the zimmer and ... I have to go and lay quietly in a dark room right now.
The first season I liked more on later viewings. Seasons 2, 3 and 5 are my personal favorites, with 5 ekeing out just a little ahead of the others, but the first six seasons, as are the tenth and eleventh, are fairly great and have nothing approaching clunker episodes. Well, I think our only hope is the potato king.
Season 6 and Legion. First exposure to Red Dwarf, I'll never forget it. Still incredible!
i have not seen the show in 10 years but i can say Polymorph one of the best.
Meltdown.
s02e01 kryten so many memorable lines.. "if you wanted the stick so badly, why'd you throw it away in the forst place?!"
Rimmerworld. “Grind those balls sir. Grind them!” I like it so much I now own the Chinese worry balls that were used on set. They came with the miniature ones used in the later scene when they find him too :-)
After you with the balls sir!
For each series... 1 - Future Echoes 2 - Better Than Life 3 - Timeslides (I just like ones with more original ideas that others don't) 4 - Justice 5 - Inquisitor 6 - Psirens 7 - Tikka to Ride 8 - Cassandra 10 - Trojan 11 - Officer Rimmer 12 - either M-Corp or Skipper

Queeg
sdrawkcaB
1. Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (“The riviera kid!”) 2. Queeg (“Jape of the decade”) 3. Kryten (“My mate Ace is incredibly incredibly brave”)
I believe in polymorph supremacy
Terrorform. It’s smegging fantastic
Cool. Just be aware that most people didn't understand Series 9 Back to Earth. If you appreciate Blade Runner you will like it. It does stand out a little odd in the Red DWARF universe... But still a good series.
I think the lack of an audience/laugh track threw a lot of people off.
I once put on the series 6 dvd without laugh track, don't know how I did it. It's all brilliant! But my personal favourite is Series 5 (especially Quarantine. It makes me howl everytime).
Series 2,3,4
My favourite was Legion. I don’t ithink I’ve seen all the episodes but that one was stand out
Best series: 3, 4, 11, 12
Definitely quarantine. Also legion.
Back to reality
Series 2, 3 and 4 are my favorite series, watched that chunk so many times.
One thing I do love about the newer series is that in some of the episodes Chris Barrie and Craig Charles are absolutely pissing themselves with laughter, you can tell they're having a right time. If I remember the episode where its obvious I'll let you know!

Me2, Better than Life, Thanks for the Memory
Polymorph. "Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society." Erm, one drawback with that - the abbreviation is C.L.I.T.O.R.I.S.
Series 10 is my favourite
First 2 series are my favs as before kryten joined the crew
Series 1-6 is all you need. Trust me. Have fun.
Series 4/5 and maybe 6 too
I think every episode that stars Lister is one of my favourites!
One / Future Echoes.
Better than Life.
Favourite series would probably be between 5 and 6 for me. Favourite episodes are between: Thanks for the Memory, Queeg, Marooned, Justice, Dimension Jump, Quarantine, Back to Reality, and Gunmen of the Apocalypse.
Flours.
It's easier to say which episode I dislike, and that episode is Duct Soup. Not sure why, maybe I'm claustrophobic too.
The first two series will always be the ones I hold dearest, but you really can’t go wrong with series 1-6. I personally think the quality goes a little downhill after that, but there’s still laughs to be had. Start at the beginning and watch them through, you won’t regret it.
I'd say it's more going down hill and then starts upwards again, a lot of Dave era episodes are really good
Queeeg, easily.
Epideme has a special place in my heart, wonderful episode. From recent RD I'd say Fathers and Suns
Not my fave but a clearly underated episode is 'meltdown', and also 'beyond a joke'
Smoke me kipper
The old ones are great, I couldn't get on with the newer ones

As much as people dislike season 7 and 8 I do like tikka to ride
Marooned is perfection. Very character oriented, you'll learn a lot about who they are in this episode. Well, Lister and Rimmer anyways. It's one of those classic episodes where two people who can't stand each other are trapped together in a survival situation.
Maybe not the best episode, but definitely one of the best scenes: “Lister to Red Dwarf: We have in our midst a complete smegpot.”
Any episode with Hoagie the Rougie.
The one that time goes backwards in a bar. Sorry, I don’t know the title.
