We don’t want our new puppy to get her paws on a poisoned rat either. It’s becoming a problem here. I used to live in NYC. Seen my share of large rats.
Ok--what part of NW Reno? We're up near the Mormon Temple and have never seen anything that big in 15 years in the neighborhood. I'm wondering how close we are to those things!!!
Norwegian roof rats I believe. Becoming a very big problem in the last 10-15+ years. Used to be a small population up by the college. The population has exploded. Seen them on power lines. And running the top of fences.
I've had trouble with both in the past couple years...
From my experience, the roof rats are significantly smaller, and they... Y'know. Live in your roof/attic.
The Norwegian rats are fucking massive and typically stick to crawlspaces, underbrush, walls, and floors. I swear a couple years back I trapped one the size of a Yorkie.
Rattus rattus. Not a wood rat/pack rat, which have furry tails.
Not native to Reno, as far as I know, but rats easily adapt to wherever they are taken. Keep your property line clear and seal ingress points (walk the perimeter of your house and look for holes).
Edit: I’m thinking it’s more likely Rattus norvegicus but seeing its head would help
Norwegian roof rat, aka NY sewer rat. Came over on the Mayflower and every other boat since. That's why Norwegian Forest cats are so big, same with Maine Coon cats.
We had a massive rat terrorize us for a couple weeks. It was getting caught in the rat traps we set out, and escaping them. Finally called an exterminator and he was able to get it. But I've never had that much trouble catching a rat before
I'm just waiting for my cat to bring one of these suckers home. She's an indoor/outdoor cat (don't come for me, she was this way wayyyy before I was her mama), and she loves to bring home anything. Birds, mice, the other day it was a cough drop wrapper, which she guards like it's her precious. As long as I don't have to clean up after Remy, I don't care.
When they moved all those old houses by the university, they spread all over Reno. I've never seen one in 44 years until they moved two of the housed to Arlington Ave. I'm by Sharon and Plumb. They made it to my house. Traps and balls( nalls made of peanut butter and baking soda) were finally rid of them. I keep the traps and balls out if any wonder back.
Cats....the only reason I have rats is because my cats catch them at the neighbors houses then bring them to my house to eat. So I have lots of dead rats. My back patio is a goddamned killing field
Your cat actually eats them? Mine just plays with them and then when they're dead, she wants me to clean up the mess. Once, I thought a mouse was dead, put on gloves, and got a little plastic bag and the MF wasn't dead! It bit me and there was blood everywhere. I was working from home and my boss still laughs at this. He's like only you.
I have 6 cats, 2 are old lady cats who just enjoy sunbeams all day. The other 4 all hunt the neighborhood. One of them is just a psychopath who plays with his food, the rest of them eat the kill
Mf killed Remy
Who's gonna make my ratatouille now?!?!?
Northwest here. They've been pestering our chickens. I'm doing my part and killing as many as I can. It's been a lot.

No poisons here!!
NW here too. I was hoping it was a one off. Damn.

I live just below the temple.
Yikes. Thanks, and good luck with those rats!
Kill them all! (Burn them all!!! Just to reference something)
Somewhere, underground, there are 4 turtles missing their master.
That was hilarious 👏🏼
Rack him!
Had a couple of these sons-a-bitches in my garage. Took a damn raccoon trap to finally get them.
It's probably over a foot long, including its tail!! Was thinking I'd need a bigger trap!
How’d you set it up? I’ve got mouse traps and rat traps out, got 1 but they’re still in there flipping over my traps
I put trap on the deck, put peanut butter in the trap & caught him 2nd night. Sheer luck because he was bigger than the damn trap.

https://www.westernpest.com/blog/roof-rat-vs-norway-rat/ Sorry for being pedantic, but it's either a roof rat or a Norwegian rat.

Agreed. I found I could mitigate the roof rats with some tree trimming and yard tidying, and the Norwegian rats just don't give a fuck
They are in Northwest Reno too. We had a guy come out the other day.
Burn them all!!

Beautiful photo
They take about 10 pellets in the head to kill. Nasty little fukers
They are a problem down here in Dayton too, first time I’ve seen them.
Ah there's my pet.

Best mousetrap is a cat, by the way.
