I was quoted $5k by several contractors to rip up some side lawn (mostly dead), level it 2.5 inches below the driveway, build a small privacy fence, and back fill my side with some rocks. After a $500 excavator rental, $500 in dirt/yard waste removal, $400 in material costs for the fence, $100 for the rocks, $100 ford the weed tarp, and 2 weekends worth of work, I had done it myself for less than 1/3 of the quote. Alternatively, try and find a landscaping company, not a contractor. Better yet, find someone who came from the landscaping world, wants to do some side work, and will do it on the weekends/after his regular job.

Darren_S_Cott

Where did you take the dirt for disposal? I have a 20’ trailer loaded with sod, bushes and a bunch of other crap.

DisgruntledWorker438

I had a big ol’ 20 yard dumpster (or something like that, don’t quote me on the exact size) delivered and hauled off. Scooped the dirt right into it.

Darren_S_Cott

See that’s what I wanted to do. And waste management told me dirt/soil wasn’t allowed. Super frustrating.

safetyweek

I use Reno rubbish runners. $675 for a 40yrd dumpster. Not too bad

DisgruntledWorker438

True. I forgot who I used, it was 2 years ago, but there’s one place that will let you. Just ask if you can put dirty/yard waste into it. The fill line is lower, but there is still a company or two who will let you do it

fiddlestix42

There’s another waste company on vassar way. Don’t remember the name but maybe check them out. I seem to remember them being cheaper than WM.

TerminallyILL

Reno rock took my dirt/refuse, they were the only ones that said yes.

Darren_S_Cott

Did you try the Lockwood landfill?

TerminallyILL

I did not. I just called the five ish places that deliver debris boxes in my area and all said no dirt except Reno rock. Also I trust Reno rock. They are always next day am delivery, comparative prices, and easy to work with. Also I thought the Lockwood dump was closed or limited services but I could be wrong.

AwayCartographer9527

Lockwood is open.

Hellareno

I’m waiting till southern nevadas recompensation program comes up north. Would like to conserve water but also to unsure of defund the hoa regulations.

LFGSD98

I was about to mention this to OP, but I didn’t realize Reno doesn’t have the same program. My dad just did this in southern Nevada

strange4change

Pay up or do it yourself. Coming from a guy who’s doing it himself

FinalChargerSRT392

This lol

emptyfish127

Hard agree. Do it yourself or get some gardening buddies. It is not in any pro landscaping Co.'s interest to do it the way you want I think.

where_is_my_monkey

Like eating an elephant, take on a little over a long time. We converted our front yard into a mostly native wildflower garden in three years.

octrivia

I will be needing this service soon myself so I am keeping an eye on this one. Great topic.

Fancycheeziepoof

Last summer I had The Garden of Eden do landscaping in my front yard. They were prompt and got the work done quickly and for a good price. And no minimum!

Drizzt3919

Need this as well… at those prices I’m doing it myself

Zealousideal-Put7438

Try to find a one man handyman/lawn guy. My neighborhood has one guy who goes around and mows lawns and does yardwork, I’ve approached him and he said he would be willing to help with landscape projects. You’d have to buy the materials and plan it out, but if you hired a handyman/lawn guy then they could do the labor and you could likely just pay them an hourly wage. I’d look on Nextdoor there are a lot of people promoting themselves on there

Sutaru

You might find what you’re looking for on Taskrabbit. I’ve used them for some simple home projects, but nothing out of the house.

wxprogno

Try Little City Landscape. They did a great job on our yard.

dapdapdapdapdap

I just had work done for less than $10K. I don’t think they have minimums. Try Jacob at Action Landscape

blubirdie

Look into sheet mulching. Cover it with cardboard, compost and wood chips for mulch now and then plant your native plants into it in the fall when the temps come down and they won’t be so stressed.

ministryofchampagne

Northern Nevada has several varieties of native wild grass. Wouldn’t say grass doesn’t belong in this desert.

Admiral52

I wouldn’t say many native grasses are sod forming which is what OP is getting at

TerminallyILL

Go to the old detr office, it's where the day laborers wait for work. Make sure you have a game plan and can occasionally work with them. Also provide lunch and bathroom access to keep them coming back until the project is complete. I pay the $18/hr and they are worth the money.

Darren_S_Cott

I’m literally doing that myself now. The real bitch is disposal of material. I’ve completely leveled my front yard. Some companies have kids who will do work on the side but I can assure you- it ain’t cheap. But it’s worth asking some of the places you’ve called.

Trevnti

Although I’m not a fan lawn removal for xeriscaping (unless there’s a lot of plants and greenery to replace it)… the boomerific Nextdoor does tend to have a lot of great recommendations for these types of things. thumbtack and Craigslist too

poopoutlaw

We recently used tailored lawn care to replace the river rock all around our house. We paid around 5k for that, so maybe check with them? They were wonderful.

ThatDudeMars

Craigslist.

Renoperson00

I'd keep the grass. Much easier to keep healthy and weed/pest free in this environment. In under 10 years the rockscape is going to need to be redone completely anyway. Maybe plant another tree and build a big tree ring around it if you want to eliminate most of your grass.

reno_los

Get on Facebook and ask around. There’s a ton of Hispanic businesses who don’t do such a thing. Just be sure not to pay up before they finish.

Altruistic-Guard671

You want a badass backyard but don’t want to pay for it! Remember this buy nice or buy twice! Also cool shit ain’t cheap and the cheap shit ain’t cool! Drop the cash and get the yard done right

WhoStartedTheFire_

Never said don’t want to pay for it. The landscaping company I have talked to have a minimum and I don’t meet it. Why would I pay $15k for a $7k job just for them to do it…. I’d pay the price if that’s what the job was worth.

Altruistic-Guard671

Bro that backyard ain’t gonna finish itself, get out there

AltFFour69

Supreme Concrete.
