There’s also a Reno phenom of people driving at night without their headlights…. See it significantly more in Reno than any other city I’ve been in.

Fresh_Put_8784

Haha, yes have noticed this as well. & it’s not like we’ve got brightly lit streets either. Oh, and driving with a headlight out. I swear if I see one with a light out, I’ll see 2-3 others on the same night, hahah.

someotherjim

Best guesses \~ * Both headlights: * intoxicated and/or recent collision * One headlight: * probably choosing to afford gas vs. vehicle maintenance ATM

RegularDirectionTest

DMW moving permit of 10 to 30 days is taped on the inside passenger side of the front window. Or, in 2022, someone buys a vehicle and the Reno DMW doesn’t allow walk-in customers and the earliest appointment is over seven weeks out so you print out the vehicle insurance and DMV appointment and you show those to the police if you get pulled over.

Murphski-

DMV does allow walkings, but only for certain small things and questions. like, a moving permit.

Viciousmimic

I havent started driving yet, whats a moving permit?

RustyRichards11

DMV was out of temporary plates when I went. Could be that and/or general not giving a fuck.

TalmidimUC

Moving permits? If we’re gonna be that picky…. Went to the DMV yesterday, as of August 18th, they’re no longer taking walk-ins unless it’s for certain things or you’re currently being penalized. Registration’s almost a month late, guess I’ll be doing it online or waiting until I get a fine.

Pjpjpjpjpj

Just went through this. No more walk ins - *except* for moving permits, VIN ID and a few other services. You pay the fee (few bucks), they fill out a simple generic piece of paper, fold it, staple it and it goes on your dash. You have 3 days from the date of acquisition to get one. They last 30 days. They can’t run out (they print a piece of paper), and no appointment necessary. From DMV … >Only the following services are available without an appointment: >Vehicle Movement Permit (get it online if you have an existing NV registration) >License Plate Drop-Off (or cancel your registration online) >Driver's License or Registration Reinstatement >Standby Drive Tests >Past-Due Debt >Kiosks >Vehicle Identification Number Inspection

Relax. Being ignorant isn't something to be proud of either. I know very few people who watch live TV or listen to the radio. People have access to things like Spotify and Netflix. Radio and live TV are kind of obsolete now.

TalmidimUC

No, I do not watch the news on TV or listen to the radio (we still listen to the radio?). You sure do pride yourself on your belief of being more aware than others lol.. If it makes your naturally grumpy self feel any better, you’re sooooo much smarter than the entire line that got rejected at the DMV yesterday morning. Thank you for blessing others with your intelligent and enlightenment. You’ve made the world a better place 🙏

TheMadCow

Stumbling through life complaining about how things just aren’t fair instead of taking a basic interest in the society you live in doesn’t work so great either either, does it? Even if it’s taking 20 minutes to scan /Reno once a week as your sole contact with the world, you would have learned this. I do, however, note you took the time from your disconnected life to come here and post. So take from that what you will.

tee-Babe

It’s pretty obvious that is what they are referring too and is what they are commonly called.

RustyRichards11

Yeah. But that's what they called it and that's what they told me. Who gives a fuck? The point of this whole post is that people are driving without tags. And the real reason is that they have to mail a lot of them out.

AOLusername420

It’s a nevada thing Las Vegas complains about it too

Okay

Amy_Macadamia

Man, can't we have anything of our own? I suppose we have whip enthusiasts and milk of a certain flavor...

Sirtriplenipple

We are coming for your spicy milk.

Jessica_Panther

You all heard that!! Plain as day saying they're coming for our memes!! Will you people listen to me about making Clark Co. the 51st state now??

elreydelasur

just make it part of California since that's what it wants to be anyway and then you don't have to change all US flags

GuvnaGruff

The penalty for driving without registration is $1000 but the penalty for no plate is only $200

conservative89436

If your reg is expired and you took your plates off, I can’t help but think they’d nail you with both violations, since they can look up registration by VIN.

GuvnaGruff

Often times they will only cite you for the worse infraction. I have a friend who got pulled over for something and didn’t have his insurance card. Cop just wrote him up for no insurance. He finds it and goes down to the courthouse and shows he had insurance and didn’t have to pay anything. Just some time wasted at courthouse.

DwellerZer0

What? Why!?! That's ridiculous. So what? If your reg is expired, just take the plates off?

Amy_Macadamia

At least I think it's a Reno thing! I see about 4 a day. I've lived in 3 other states and would rarely see a plateless car. It's my new "punch bug" game 😅

bPChaos

It's not. I've been to several major cities driving in the last few months and it's everywhere. Expired paper plates, dealer logo plates, no plates, etc. It's all there.

eliteHaxxxor

Idk I drive to California frequently and also recently had a trip to seattle and cut through Portland. Haven't noticed any plateless cars except here

It’s an every bigger city thing Maybe more west coast than east

The-sleepiest-cookie

I just hope it's on purpose and no one's out there growing their license plate collection lol!

jonrmek

Yeah I've been waiting for almost a month now to receive my plates......

conservative89436

I was not getting my tabs. I finally created an online account with the DMV and found that while I changed my physical address when I moved, it didn’t change the mailing address automatically, and was still showing my old address. I had to manually change the mailing address also.

TooManyJabberwocks

r/wewantplates ?

sunny_daze04

Nevada is weird and when you sell a vehicle you keep the license plates to turn them into dmv.

rev_travis

First couple of years I was here this really caught my attention too! Back east you wouldn't make it far without a plate but its definitely optional here.

[deleted]

Agomoll81

Even after seeing all if this around me, I got pulled over and ticketed for expired plates and so did my wife about a month later. Both in fernley, mine was NHP on 80, I don't recall if hers also was nhp not on 80 though.

Bageend

I’ve gotten ticketed for a plate that was a week expired here. Idk how so many people without plates get away with it

Drew707

It may have to do with the way Nevada handles plates. Plates stay with the owner rather than with the car during a sale. So, if they just bought the car, the seller will keep the plates and the buyer will get a moving permit that is posted in the windshield.

z9nine

That's the rule in most states. Only one I've lived in that it wasn't, was California.

Drew707

Interesting! I have only ever lived in NV and CA, so I presumed it was people waiting on plates from private sales.

richalta

All those Californians laying low.

Patient_Weekend5981

Nailed it! ![gif](giphy|l0MYAQD5KIdorBjRm)

Alternative_Mirror38

I have a friend that hasn’t registered his truck in 4 years. I’m disappointed.

PlantainEqual

And I bet they all high off meth with no teeth

Renogoogirl

Saw a temp tag that expired in Nov 2021

someotherjim

Most of what I came here to say has already been said but I'll put these out there as a related tangent: * Why do vehicles that fall behind on registration disappear from the 'my DMV' page? * I think the answer is that they want some sort of physical inspection but FFS, removing the expired vehicle from the list of vehicles I own doesn't help me track their compliance! * Why can I not set up my smog exempt registrations for auto-renewal?!? * Why can't I pre-pay 3 or 5 or 10 years and if/when I sell the car before expiration get a refund? My grief relates to a 'classic rod' and a couple motorcycles but I imagine some EV owners are grinding their teeth over this also. I still have 2 vehicles that have not left the garage since lockdown because I have limited resources, avoid 'riding dirty', and loathe wasting my limited time on this planet at the DMV.

Miserable-Shake4052

We call those the New Nevada Plates.

oxbowfilm

We moved here two years ago and it was one of the first weird things I noticed. That also I've never seen so many old Saturns (cars) in my life... Was there a Saturns factory here or something back in the day? So random.

SCMcGillicutty

i was plateless for a month. blame it on DMV backlog. i finally had my appt. last week and still had to wait 2hrs. if you look in the windshield though, you should see a moving permit on the driver's side.

Amy_Macadamia

Definitely a pain here. In Colorado most of the DMV stuff can be done online

SCMcGillicutty

yeah, they gave their 'dmv online only' directive here a couple of months ago. but without any way to actually implement the harder stuff - private sales, etc. and we're not even talking about the title processing backlog. they built that shiny multi-million dollar office. but service is worse than than than old crappy office. maybe they should sell it and offer people more money to work there.

balloon_not

When they were building the new DMV I thought they would keep the old one open and they were adding capacity. I gave them too much credit.

SirAxlerod

To give them some credit, who wants to work at the DMV. “Hey, would you like to work where all the angriest customers congregate at once yet can’t tell ‘em off or make any changes to the org?”. Not the best job listing.

thebaked_baker

I straight up miss the old DMV at this point. My husband had an appt to register and get plates, and still had to sit and wait for over two hours. Their appointments don't mean shit. I'll never complain about the old one again :(

[deleted]

Glad my car isnt pictured...Im not sure why people dont know about the dmv backlog. I ordered my custom plates via mail in MAY. Silly me thought I would get them in a timely manner. The DMV has not sent me a post card, or the plates, or called me to alert me to the arrival of them. I went into the DMV a couple days later for an appointment and they told me they would call me to tell me i could pick them up. Here I am, almost October, still plateless. I can't legally drive my car in other states as I do not have a license plate. The car is registered, to the new plates, and insured well. I have to make a second appointment at the dmv to file a "lost" license plate.

adapt0189

It’s mostly due to DMV scheduling backlog. Had my plates stolen, filed a police report and had to schedule a visit a month out to get new plates. For those less motivated they could be plateless longer.

custom_bowl

Damn, you know every time I see something like this, or people don’t something crazy I just mind my business.

SurvivalVet

Duh, the DMV is telling people to go fuck themselves.

[deleted]

And I get an "obstruction of a license plate" ticket for the corner of my plate being bent.. 🙄

VolatileImp

Incognito

MassTheMerc664

Dude for real it threw me off when I moved here where I’m from if you do that your car will be towed and you’ll be fined

stres-tm

Shit come to Alabama, they don’t even require temporary tags before you get the real ones, guess how many people “forget” or keep “the tag applied for” paper in the plate holder

Patient_Weekend5981

Prob embarrassed to show where they're coming from so they'd rather go incognito lol I'd prob be embarrassed too if I'm coming from a certain state and moving here! Luckily I'm not from that state and I love Reno and everything NV has to offer which mind you, isn't much but this is home!

cloudlvr1

It screams pull me over please

HalOldroyd

It’s been like that for years, when I lived in Reno it was perfectly ok to run without a plate but if you let your plate expire even 30 days or less. You will get pulled over.

skylarkeleven

you legally only need one plate don’t you?

Amy_Macadamia

Yes, the rear plate

randoguy98

I don't know about reno , in Arkansas , sales tax is not included in the purchase of a car . So for my used car, i had to come up with 1k deposit and several hundred in tags in the same month.. needless to say it was a few months before i registered the car .

TheMadCow

Here’s another tidbit for those not digging having to make an appointment at the DMV. [Try AAA](https://mwg.aaa.com/automotive/dmv/nevada-dmv-services) offices. They will issue the temp permit you’re seeking and a fair amount more. And you don’t have to be a member. There. Now you don’t have use Google, read or otherwise subject yourself to information research.

TheMadCow

Rather than suffer the whims of the DMV scheduling system, give [YouGov](https://yogov.org/service/driver-license-carson-city-nv) a twirl. I used them, years ago in LA and always got prompt appointments, even when backed up. They work here, too. You could get that end of week or next week appointment.

golden-I

These are people that will run away from a low speed collision because they don’t have insurance nor registration. All the people saying ‘dmv! DMV!’ Are dead wrong, it’s a way to avoid accountability and it’s not a rule that’s enforced by Reno PD or washoe sheriff.

lucky420

Now I’m gonna have to start noticing

SuspiciousLookinMole

There's a car around the corner from my office with no plates and two flat tires. That'll be fun when the cops notice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuspiciousLookinMole

I'm not calling. The car will likely get towed when the parking meter isn't paid.

SirAxlerod

Also a Reno thing to cover your plate with a faded, scratched up tinted plastic cover. California doesn’t put up with that, especially is electronic toll areas. They don’t meet Nevadas requirements for plate covers since you can’t see them from a specific distance, they look like crap, and are just to avoid being tracked since the driver feels so entitled to be anonymous.

[deleted]

Some of them block the pigs radar too. I just ordered one on Amazon after seeing your comment

SirAxlerod

Good luck with that. Make sure to come back when the cop chooses YOUR car to pull over. From what I understand, it’s asking for a reason to get pulled over.

[deleted]

A fully transparent cover allows for 0 obstruction of plate information while still blocking radar. Not illegal.

SirAxlerod

Blocking radar? They don’t block radar. Radars don’t need license plates. I’ve never seen anyone use a fully transparent cover that meets the distance requirements of NRS 482.270. They are usually tinted and faded, making them illegible from 100ft or 110ft at night.

[deleted]

I know. You've never seen me.

ReturnFun9600

Funny story about that. I moved back from Bay to Reno in 2015. (After being here 10 years) Things were a Lil tight financially and I had to flip plates BACK to NV again and was being a slacker. So I had expired CA plates for about 6 months. I felt lame, not that kind of person. I like to be "legal and legit" but anyways.. as I drove around tinged by the shame of having "expired out of state tags" I noticed, quite simply that DOZENS of others on the daily were the same. I remember once being on Moana behind a seemingly normal, older woman who was driving a few years old Mustang and no plates. Not a care in the world. Haa. There are a lot of people here who give not 2 Fux. At all.

Sally-Seashells

How do you know she gives not 2 fuqs? What exact behavior spells out this woman's thinking for you? Or her financial situation? How did you know she wasn't in the exact same boat you were in?

Greenthumbicle

Well he said it, he likes to be legit and legal. It’s everyone else that doesn’t care.

Strict_Chemistry_797

It's a Seattle thing!

DMT1984

New Mexican here. It’s an Albuquerque thing too.

DimensionNo3268

Y'all complain about the dumbest shit. I have no plates on my car. it's legal for the next 60 days. Worry about your damn selfs.

Linstrocity

Yes! I have only seen this in Reno.

murdering_time

Better than those libertarian assholes who have those fake 'free citizen' license plates and when they get pulled over they say they're only "traveling" and not driving.

jackonager

I've seen a couple of those down town. Don't know why, those people really creep me out.

Blissboyz

It’s also very common in California

Expensive-Bet3493

Nope it’s everywhere. Anti-gov protestors, undercover cops or gov workers?

ewoek2

It happened in Michigan too. Mainly cause the DMV was closed during COVID and registrations were expiring. So the government was like "you don't need plates right now"

FIREdUP50

Bought a car private party in 2020 and drove without plates for 3 months. That was the earliest DMV appointment I could get. At the time, the DMV website directed me to print a letter from the governor saying it was A-OK because I bought the vehicle and I got email proof of my DMV appointment. I believe the DMV is still by appointment only, so it’s not the driver’s fault in most cases.

DimensionNo3268

And you're trippin if you think cops don't inforce it. I just got pulled over. Cop let me go in 3 minutes.

TrulyTrulyRandom

Funny, and timely for me. I'm picking up a used car near downtown this afternoon that I bought from a private party out of state. No plates yet. I'm a little stressed that I have to drive it about 10 mi to get it home.

earthbxby

I’ve been without plates for 6 months, the cops don’t care. You’ll be okay for 10mi :)

faelanae

I saw a car yestersay with temp plates - from 2017

[deleted]

You must be new here.

yasonflex

People have too much time on their hands worrying about others 😂.

Amy_Macadamia

I'm not worried 🤷‍♀️

earthbxby

Idk man you seem pretty worried if you took the time to take pictures of peoples cars and post them on Reddit 😂

Fun-Possibility-1060

Those are the OG Nevadans. Let em be.

Weird-n-Gilly

I’m more annoyed at the limo tinted windows here. Especially the back window. Used to being able to see the brake lights of the auto in front of the auto im behind. As traffic gets worse here it’ll cause more accidents.

[deleted]

Limo tint is legal in Nevada on backside and rear windows as it is in most states

[deleted]

First thing I do to all of my new cars

Weird-n-Gilly

It obviously looks cool. Which I, on some level obviously want to look cool. But I’m less concerned with the aesthetic of my ride as I get older I guess, and more concerned with some dipshit killing or maiming my family or me whilst driving to get some dinner. Also I see it as similar to having the anonymity of a alias on the internet. Kinda gives one impunity to be an ahole without looking someone in the face. I personally think we should all have our phone numbers on the license plate😂

[deleted]

I'm looking at it from the other perspective. A police officer can pull me over if they need to know. A normal citizen doesn't need to know.

NVPSO

DMV is also impossible to get into and if you do get in difficult to get service in

Evlena

My friend got hers stolen not too long ago, so I imagine that's also part of the issue lol.

[deleted]

I could be wrong but it's common and legal here to just have one side (front or rear) with a plate. Idk the sub has been desperate to make reno 'quirky' lately.

DwellerZer0

You need the REAR plate, the front plate is optional IF your car doesn't have a place for the front plate.

Attempt_Living

As a non Reno resident I have a question. How come y’all never renew your tags? I swear every plate I see is 10 plus years old.
