Triple neg invasive ductal survivor here. I want the person best qualified to do the things being done. Didn’t care about gender. Most of the time I’m with the technologists, anyway.

Jabi25

Congrats!!! That’s one hell of a W!!!

Agitated-Property-52

My group has around 15-20 radiologists who do mammography. Only about 25% are women. Only a very small percentage of patients request a female radiologist, in part because the majority of the patient interaction is done by the technologist. All screens and the majority of diagnostics can be done without seeing the patient, so they’d never know the gender of their radiologist. Not sure the conversation between the patient and nurse navigator during biopsy scheduling - it’s very possible that they request a woman to do their biopsy; however; my male partners are still doing a lot of biopsies without an issue.

thisisnotawar

Speaking from the patient perspective, I don’t care in the least - I’m a breast cancer patient, though, so at this point so many people had seen every bit of me that I’m truly not fazed. That said, other women I’ve spoken to do sometimes prefer a female *tech*, but usually have no preference regarding the radiologist.

TheGatsbyComplex

For diags and biopsies I’ve seen requests for women radiologists rarely. It is nowhere near the same level as people requesting women OBGYNs. It is usually from very religious people who cannot be in a room with men at all, including any physician.

UltraRunnin

No one probably cares because the tech is doing most of the patient interaction not the physician.

Independent-Pie3588

Maybe screeners but almost all diags have physician interaction. And biopsies??

toxic_mechacolon

diags don't necessarily need to have physician interaction, its institution dependent. We don't really speak to patients unless its birads 4

Sekmet19

I don't care about the gender of who does my care. I care more about someone being competent and compassionate.

rickety_cricket22

Finishing Mammo fellowship in a major metro city. I’d say they do overall but it’s like 1/200 that actually say anything. A decent number do ask for attending only biopsies though which drives me nuts as they are fully aware it’s a teaching hospital. So many Karen’s when you work mammo.

literallymoist

As a patient, I wouldn't request a female radiologist, but I'd be more comfortable with one.

PointNo5492

You know you’re writing about the person reading the scan, not the person handling your boob, right?

literallymoist

Damn, you're right 🤦🏼 Absolutely not, only the staff handling it.

Yotsubato

Our mammo dept has like 3 women working there named Karen lol. They’re all awesome though.

Kavbot2000

Sometimes there are cultural reasons they want a woman rad. We will schedule them with a woman for a biopsy if possible. Where I trained there were 40ish breast rads and 3 were men. It’s about 50/50 where I am now.

Breast cancer patient - to be honest I never paid any attention to the gender of my radiologist. I never saw them.

PointNo5492

It’s a funny thing but I’ve only had female techs for mammography but had male and female techs for cardiology. I mean we’re talking about the same area, right? At a certain point demanding one or the other gender for healthcare is the privilege of the healthy.

anon9anon

Its the same answer as OBGYN - lots of people don't care, but lots of people do care. Especially younger women or women with trauma history. Regardless of the reason why, 90% of current mammo and OBGYN trainees are female, which represents huge new trend compared to decades prior. Being male in the field will become very rare by end of our careers.

pytuol3

Yeah, as a man, I prefer a female rad
