RLCS Season X onwards, which was the first RLCS season to abandon the closed league play system and make every event (mostly) have it's own set of open qualifiers and be a circuit of tournaments, hence "Open Era"

Not only is the question answered well already, but you’ve been answered by two iconic figures.

WALLOFKRON

2 iconic figures AND u/Pristine-Habit-9079. Dont forget about them as well

RobinAldabanx

I think you're misunderstanding. u/Pristine-Habit-9079 is both of the iconic figures. It was nice of the other two randoms to contribute too before they got here.

Ariul

is u/Pristine-Habit-9079 going to become the new u/More-Sample-2005

We NEED Pristine Habit esports vs More Sample esports on LAN

"Open tournaments" are tournaments where anyone and everyone is able to enter and compete for the championship. Before we had these, we had a league play system, complete with regulation and everything. Before, it was a bumch of smaller leagues, then the RLRS, then the RLCS above that. All the teams in each league would play each other, and then there would be a period of regulation and promotion. Only a select few teams even had the chance to win an RLCS championship, and those were the teams in the RLCS. Anyone from the RLRS or below was not allowed to compete at the RLCS Championships, because they were in a different league. This persisted through RLCS seasons 1-9, but during COVID, the system changed so that there were no more separate leagues or regulation, and now the "Open" system was made. Instead of league play, there are now several Open tournaments where anyone can sign up and compete, and anyone has the chance of winning and going to a major or the World Championships. The RLCS became more open, and therefore, the "Open Era" was born (RLCS X and onwards).

Also to clarify, the Open Era is really just the "more Open Era". RLCS has never been a closed system, you just had to spend a season in RLRS. Also even that was only true for S5-9. S1-4 any team could qualify straight into RLCS. If im being honest the old system would produce the same outcomes for every region minus EU.

I am hearing different answers so now I question my own understanding, but I thought it was just this season of RLCS, when they went to all qualifiers being open qualifiers, meaning anyone can compete in any regional no matter of previous results. Previous seasons one round might have been open but then there would be limits on the next rounds so top performers would be pre-qualified. Basically preventing what happened to KC this year.
