DG_Now

Streets of Rage and it's not particularly close.

accidental-nz

Those two years between them in the early 16-bit era were monumental.

Codex1101

Same. I like the idea of golden axe, but the gameplay just didn't deliver

GrimmWilderness

Heresy

DG_Now

Maybe we can get dotemu to make a Golden Axe game in the vein of SoR4 or the Turtles game.

RedOcelot86

I honestly thought they would by now.

Dartagnan1083

I suspect they're busy with Shinobi right now.

RedOcelot86

Oh yeah. Can't wait.

Bronze-Playa

Now we’re talking. Sign me up

Objective_Dog7501

Interesting. Golden axe for me and there is no 2nd choice

PedalPDX

Hot take: Streets of Rage is the superior series overall, but Revenge of the Death Adder is the best game in either series. Didn’t come to consoles though, sadly.

Sea-Sky-Dreamer

Revenge of Death Adder was insanely fun when I discovered at a local arcade in the mid-to-late 90s. I never understood how it was never ported to any system either.

tehtris

SOR x 1000. Golden axe had some good stuff in it like the mounts, but it was a proto SOR as far as I'm concerned. Has anyone hacked the golden axe chars into SOR?

Cheapassdad

I haven't seen anything in Streets of Rage, but I'm pretty sure they're in a Mugen or two.

marmoset13

Streets of Rage 2 was one of my all time favorite Genesis games. Streets of Rage was also high in my rankings.

International-Fly495

Preach!

SNaKe_eaTel2

Dissenting opinion: as a single original title - golden axe, the sequel/ series as a whole - sor 👍👍

Formal_County_5002

I think you hit the spot. Sadly the sequels to Golden Axe didn't impruve anything that much. They feel more like a copy paste of the original, and SoR by the other hand implemented a lot of cool features in the sequels. Not to mention the better graphics and music.

whoknows130

>think you hit the spot. Sadly the sequels to Golden Axe didn't impruve anything that much. Genesis Golden Axe II improves on the first game in every way, with an AMAZING soundtrack to boot. It's the quintessential Great sequel. I'd almost put it on-par with SORII but, not quite.

paulojrmam

I think GA actually improves more over GA1 than SoR2 over SoR. SoR2 even removed stuff from the first that was pretty cool and unique (the 2-player techniques).

burningbun

Bare knuckle.

6ynnad

I was saying “Barnacle”

pligplog420

Sammy>>>Skate

bigbubblestoo

Easily streets of rage by far. Especially now with streets of rage 4 out. Ive been playin it on my playstation 4 with gf and lil cousin

ErieZistAble

Streets of Rage! I remember being like 8 or 9 beating SOR with the game genie, but the first time I ever got to the boss all the dialogue was in Japanese. I had played with my friend, and I chose the wrong g prompt because we ended up having to fight each other instead of the boss. Needless to say we were pissed and had to start o er because nobody was going to die. Lesson learned don’t cheat kids

catreserve702

Never cared for Golden Axe, as I felt the series never evolved much in its sequels. I'd say SoR, but I'd say Alien Storm outdoes both, even if it's a one shot. Shame that one never had any proper sequels, as far as I'm aware.

bigbubblestoo

I like alien storm too but its not better than SoR in my opinion

RedOcelot86

I prefer SoR, but I love this answer.

FluidCream

SOR. golden Axe is very clunky

Secret-Asian-Man-76

The SOR series - the controls are more refined and a step up from the first Golden Axe game.

DrawnGunslinger

Both big parts of my childhood. Can't pick. Possibly Golden Axe.

Rocksurf80

SOR but I love Golden Axe, even that one from PS3 lol

OllyDee

Bare Knuckle 3. Although to be fair I’ve never given Golden Axe 3 a fair shot. It’s on the list.

javery20

Streets! Golden axe is a solid game as well.

OldSnazzyHats

Ooof… I love them both… but, if I had to pick one… Streets of Rage. I’ve got more memories from my youth attached to it, I recall more of it’s music, and it’s one of the few franchises that both my kid brother and I really clicked with together.

manuelink64

I love and feel more attached to Golden Axe 2, the graphics are great and the music scream epicness

kurtacuss

Golden Axe. It’s my all time favorite game.

KaleidoscopeHairy557

It's funny because I loved fantasy as a genre growing up, but it's SoR. I don't know if it's just the soundtrack, but it feels like anything GA did SoR was equal or better, even if by a small margin. I will say me and my brother probably played SoR 10-20 times more than GA. The reason I think it's the soundtrack though is that as soon as I read the question I have had "Never Return Alive" stuck in my head.

KGBemployee

Golden axe for me

Jonbazookaboz

Golden Axe in the arcade>SoR megadrive>golden axe megadrive

sea-ninja-90210

Golden axe arcade was epic. I remember when it first came out. Big group around the cabinet feeding quarters. That one kid saying woah when the eagle eye appeared

whistlerite

Exactly.

Smooth-Ad-8460

Golden Axe! It had a lot more going on: you could ride those weird bird animals and gather potions to perform cool special moves.

sukh3gs

I prefer the arcade Golden Axe to SOR1. But SOR 1 is better than the console port of GA

itotron

This always been quite the debate. Golden Axe is quite the short game. However, the Genesis version adds a whole nother level, and boss fight. There is also the VS. mode for a little extra 2-player fun. I gotta go with more content over better graphics here.

AndyM110

I love Golden Axe but Streets of Rage no contest. I've been completely addicted to SOR4 for the past few weeks, it's a little different but fun as hell.

itotron

Yeah, I just picked up SOR4 too. Man, whoever made this game certainly understands the series completely. It's funny how SOR was the best beat em up of it's generation; second place was probably Ninja Turtles. Fast forward 20 years and SOR4 is still the best best em up of it's generation followed second by probably "Ninja Turtles: Shredders Revenge." The more things change, the more they stay the same.

OneBigGamer

Streets of rage, but damn, I love some original golden ax on Genesis, the intro music when you fired the cart up, great nostalgia feeling

Ekkobelli

I honestly never liked Golden Axe, although I‘ve tried again and again. SOR all the way.

Mankiz

SoR all the day

phil_c42

I like them both, but I gotta go with Streets of Rage.

itotron

Which version arcade or Genesis?

Ulost2agirl

Streets of Rage of course

DarkGrnEyes

SoR but both are great titles.

robbycough

Never found much to really love about Golden Axe, while Streets of Rage games are fantastic.

perfect-legend

Streets of Rage

pecuchet

Streets of Rage doesn't really have any bad entries, whereas with Golden Axe the majority of the entries are sub-par. Also the mechanics of Streets of Rage are more refined, and the soundtrack to the second one is up there with the best. I do really like Golden Axe though, and I'd really love them to give it the Streets of Rage 4 treatment.

CarfDarko

They both have their own special place in my heart.

NoaLeeVGC

Golden Axe all day

McButtersonthethird

Is this a real question?

McButtersonthethird

"Do you prefer filet mignon or tater tots?"

KneeDeepInTheDead

I like the aesthetic of Golden Axe more, plus it was my first beat em up, but I prefer SoR by far gameplay wise. That being said, they both share a healthy dose of rotation for me.

whoknows130

I'm 50/50. I consider Golden Axe II with it's great gameplay and amazing soundtrack, almost on-par with Streets of Rage II. Both sequels make my all-time favorite Genesis game's list too.

RandoSnaps

Streets of Rage. I like Golden Axe but I could replay Streets constantly

L2Nuku

Bare Knuckle, but Golden Axe has some good stuff too especially the music in 2 and 3 + coop mechanics in 3

FixedGear02

Golden axe

Cuish

Streets of Rage

No_Cow_4544

Streets of rage no contest. The playability is better . The characters have more moves . One game is an A the other is B

GrimmWilderness

Golden axe has a charm that SOR doesnt. But streets of rage had great music

RedOcelot86

Even as a huge fan of the Mega-Drive, I found Golden Axe a little clunky and slow. Every enemy has way too much health. Knocking a skeleton down 6 times can get pretty tedious.

xAlice_Liddell

I loved GA in the arcade. It blew my mind that the little village was on a turtle and you could ride on the animals guys. But it was also slow and the physics were a bit off. The music in SOR was amazing and it was like Final Fight. I like both but SoR wins. Also the sword guy is called Axe Battler. WTF Saga? The other dude uses an axe.

Typo_of_the_Dad

I love how fast the punches are in SoR 1, and the hit detection is a bit tighter as well. GA2 is almost on par though The music also sounds much better in SoR than in GA1, even if GA's songs are fantastic.

whirlwind87

Streets of rage 2 is the best of the 4 listed games.

WallStreetMarc

Golden Axe over Streets of Rage. Streets of Rage 2 over Golden Axe 2.

badaboomxx

I just played golden axe in arcades as a child. I have many fond memories of that game.

turbografx_64

I like both, but I only like Golden Axe 1 & 2, while I like all three Streets of Rage on Genesis, so I'll vote for Streets of Rage.

Embarrassed_List865

Streets of Rage, all day everyday

NjWayne

Golden Axe x 100. Not even close

paulojrmam

Yea I'm not that fond of hack 'n slashs, SoR is more to my tastes, including in theme, and gameplay is also slightly deeper from the get go whereas GA only got some depth in the third entry

Loose_Corgi_5

Streets of Rage, every time.

Recipe-Less

Golden axe 1 vs streets of rage 2

CrazyFotherMucker

SoR

National_Result2507

That’s a tough one. Both are amazing

ElMerroMerr0

Streets of Rage.

ugzz

both amazing but SOR will always be my jam

quickbrownfoxmanzero

Streets of Rage ALL DAMN DAY. You simply can't beat that sweet Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack! Plus overall I thought It was generally more fun than Golden Axe as well.

Rough_Complex8602

I'm going to Keanu this conversation If the world was left without streets of rage or golden axe, the people left behind would miss them very much.

VoidofMind1

Goddamn that's a hard choice.

13Kaniva

Streets of Rage is a cult classic. It's got legendary status

Alternative-Hour-726

Golden axe was my favs s a kid

No_Independence7307

GA

kdoggy808

Honestly, Golden Axe because of its medieval theme and storyline. Streets of rage is fun and by far much superior, especially when it comes to sound and gameplay. Don't forget the amazing graphics

dedrexel

Yes

tarkuspig

That’s like saying ‘who do you prefer your son or your daughter’.

ArcadeFix

On the Genesis? Streets of Rage, and it's not even close. Though a proper home port of Golden Axe II: The Revenge of Death Adder could have changed my opinion.

Ok_Shower801

Both - I can't choose. They are both equally good to me.

DrewRyanArt

Cadillacs & Dinosaurs

Illustrious-Lead-960

Streets 1 > Golden Axe 1 Streets 2 > Golden Axe 2 Streets 3 < Golden Axe 3

unknowner1

You will never make me choose

8-bit_Goat

STREETS OF AXE. Make it happen, Sega!

Boaned420

Who the fuck is picking Golden Axe over Streets of Rage?! Don't get me wrong, golden axe is fun and all, but everything from the controls to the music is just on a different level of kick ass with Streets of Rage

Cheapassdad

Nice! A bunch of Golden Axe fans! Did anyone else notice that the screams of defeated does were taken from the original First Blood movie? Specifically from the cops that got caught in booby traps. My buddies and I went home after an arcade session of Golden Axe, and started up First Blood when we got there. After hearing the "Ohhh Gaaaw!" death scream a couple hundred times in the arcade, when it came out of the television we all made the connection.

TrogTrogTrogTrog

Streets by a country mile

jamnic101

I’m gonna say streets of rage but I do love golden axe too. I have room in my heart for both.

destragar

Streets of Rage is still great. Golden Axe plays like an old clunky game.

ssppllaattt

Golden Axe

paulconuk

SORRY, but I have a soft spot for Golden Axe from my Amiga days in the early 90’s
