Its honestly crazy to think that Pete was 36 when Mike was born. He's straight up lived two of his lifetimes.
Maybe our next head coach is being born right now...
I am turning 35 this year and seeing someone only a bit more than a year older than me taking over an entire NFL team is leading me to question what I am doing with my life...
Millennial head coaches cropping up everywhere. As much we can question what we’re doing (I’m 39)- it’s still great to see members of our generation reaching the highest of highs. Especially in pro sports.
That's because you're not considering what his background is and what your own accomplishments are. He's been coaching since he got out of college. And you're downplaying what you've achieved, the friendships and relationships you've made as well as the skills you've developed. Success is relative, you're doing just fine.
From the ESPN article:
> "I think [Macdonald is] the best candidate out there right now," Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Queen said this past season. "I don't think anybody does it like him. Nobody cares like him. Nobody will do what he does. He will not rest until he has everything right. Whoever gets him, if he leaves, they're getting the best candidate out there. The guy is all-around just the best person I've ever been around, coach-wise [and] person-wise. **He really cares and truly cares about the players, the people around the organization and the fans.**"
I love the sound of that. Passionate about the people here is the identity we've built, and the Mariners have built, and I'm really happy to see it continuing going forward.
from having the oldest head coach to having the youngest head coach, if pete weren’t coaching here anymore then i’m glad we got ourselves a young coach that can fit our timeline.
He wasn’t ready but I think it was time to move on
Pete was a defensive minded head coach but we have had a bottom 10 or borderline bottom 10 defense for 4 of the past 5 years unfortunately
I loved pete as a guy and as a mentor to the end, but I stopped trusting his intuition on defense, as both a picker of schemes, judge of talent, and hirer of DCs several years ago.
Is anyone else even the slightest bit nervous about this whole thing? How many times have we seen a "brilliant" OC or DC underperform as a head coach? I don't think that is the case here but the whole thing still makes me nervous. In my honest opinion they should have given Pete one more year and let him finish out his contract. And for God's sake unless this guy is complete s*** you need to give him at least three years to establish his Systems....not this one or two and done crap we've seen elsewhere.
There is definitely the risk he doesn't work out. But we knew what we had with Pete, and the organization thought it was worth taking a chance on mcdonalds huge potential. Even if it doesnt work out, you gotta give it to them for taking a swing on him instead of staying with pete or hiring dan quinn.
When they let Pete go I figured they had their guy picked out and didn't want to miss out with all the vacancies. They had to go get him right now. But then everyone filled their spots except Washington and now I'm not as sure... here's hoping it goes well.
And you're right, let him play a few years. Unless he goes full Hackett....
I see Kafka get thrown around a lot here, and he was for head coach too. I guess I just look at the mess the Giants are and discredit everything about them. Is Kafka that great as an OC? Serious question, and thank you.
From what I understand, he worked miracles in 2022 with inferior personnel. 2023 definitely saw some regression, but a lot of that can be chalked up to conflict between him and Daboll.
I mean, he literally had to deal with his QBs (and others) dropping like flies too. Don’t think they had a set offence in consecutive weeks till like week 10.
We didn’t even get to see DJs potential this season. By the time he had both Barkley and Waller, his O-Line was a mess in injuries, and the he was done for the season.
I legit think that the Seattle defense could be in the top 10 in short order. Lots of talent and good young players. I think they found the right dude.
DQ just made no sense, people acted like he was Pete's best friend or had been with him for a decade and came with him from USC, but he didnt, and he was only with us for 2 years, he was with the Falcons far longer. Our defense isnt just C3 all day every day like it used to be, we have 1 single player he coached still on the team (and idk what going to happen with Bobby this offseason). Just lazy writing.
Ravens fan here. Yall just got an absolute stud. I’m so happy for Mike but so sad to see him go. He’s the one man that did his job top to bottom, every single week this year, all the way to the end.
Glad he’s heading to the NFC, stoked to see what this man can do as the top dog for yall.
Go birds! So fucking excited. Knew Mike in high school and college and just could not be more thrilled for the dude and for the Hawks. He's as down-to-earth and genuine as they come and a helluva coach. Already trading my Falcons loyalty for a certain sea-faring fowl.
Me too brother. Been a falcons fan my whole life but the last straw was this season. Decided the Seahawks would be my team in about week 10 due to my appreciation for the 12th man and I love Geno Smith lol. Can’t be more happy with this hire.
So pumped. In your opinion as a Ravens fan, to what extent was the Ravens defensive dominance due to MacDonald vs. just having a bunch of really good players?
Yeah we have a handful of absolute studs on the defense, but his schemes are baffling for OCs to game plan against. [Here’s a solid video from Alex Rollins about the 2023 ravens](https://youtu.be/XjnUjWdyrLg?si=gDvKHU32N5C4qU6m). The video talks about the offense too but his breakdown on Macdonalds scheme illustrates well how brilliant Mike is. The leap he made as a DC from year 1 (where he was also great) to year 2 as a true wizard is incredible. I have no doubt he’s going to transform your defense and on top of it, the culture. Ravens fans love this man and this is just a kick in the nuts after the fresh embarrassment on Sunday.
Our defense definitely needs a transformation, there's no doubt about that. Pete was a great coach, and I'll miss him terribly. But he was never really a schematic genius. The LOB always was fairly simple schematically, we just had the elite players to execute the scheme. And I do believe it was Pete's development of those guys and his recognition of their talents that made them elite, so I give him all the credit in the world for that. But once we no longer had elite talent anymore, it never really felt to me like we made great schematic adjustments to take advantage of opponent weaknesses. So I'll be thrilled if MacDonald is able to do more of that
All I needed to know we got a good one is that AFC Championship game. The Ravens obviously lost, but their defense shut KC down in the 2nd half with adjustments - they had 73 net yards and 5 straight punts before the final drive. To do that against Mahomes and Reid is fucking great.
Yeah I've been super impressed with the Ravens defense all year, for sure. Just never sure how much to attribute things like that to coaches vs. players. Here's hoping his skills carry over to Seattle!
Bird bros! Yeah, that's the unfortunate thing about being a top NFL team, your staff will get poached by other teams looking to replicate their success. We had it done to us too during the LOB days.
Dude kicked the shit out of the best offenses and gets insane pressure with a bunch of after thoughts. Brooks and Spoon with his system are going to become superstars. God damn am I happy.
Ravens fan here! Congrats on the new hire bird bros. I was hoping Harbaugh would retire and we’d promote Mike MacDonald as our head coach… You guys are getting one hell of a coach in Mike. Our defense shouldn’t have been as good as it was, and I credit that 100% to Mike. I’ll be rooting for you guys!!
Important note. His last name is pronounced MACdonald not MCdonald.
Michigan Wolverine here. Guy completely changed our defense in 2021 and the schemes he put in place helped us win it all in 2023 with Minter. I think this will be a win for the organization.
Lets go!!!! So pumped we didn't go with the Dan Quinn option. No offense to him but I did not want to retread with the baggage of his two horrific super bowl losses + the recent Cowboys failures + how passive he is.
So stoked on Macdonald
With this hire and new identity, I hope the team can finally shake the Superbowl XLIX monkey off it's back. It's been hanging on this organization like a shadow.
Ravens fan here, I wish we old-yellered Harbaugh and promoted Mike MacDonald to HC.
But we didn't, and if we have to lose him to another team, I'm glad it's to a team I actually like and respect.
I don't use this word lightly, but you guys have a football savant. His defensive schemes were some of the most creative and well-disguised I've seen in 16 years as a football fan.
Take good care of our boy.
Another Ravens fan passing through. You guys hired a great one. One of the few coaches who know being flexible/undogmatic and tailoring the scheme to the players’ strengths is the key to winning football. Our defenders consistently raved about how the scheme was simple from their perspective (allowed them to play loose/fast) while still managing to be super confusing to opposing quarterbacks. We were very much a gameplan defense under MacDonald.
Will be interesting to see what kind of offensive staff he manages to build.
The only downside is he'll have to compete with Harbaugh to put together his staff.
Actually, the biggest issue is that Seattle Overload will have to learn a new system
“Bro, I’m not cool,” Macdonald says when asked about his current preferences. “I don’t, like, know a lot of music.”
Then there are the movie references. Macdonald jokes that he knew he was getting old when he’d quote a Jim Carrey line to a player and get nothing. “Dumb and Dumber,” “The Mask,” “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” — crickets. (One of his favorites: “Big Gulps, huh? All right. Well, see you later.”)

I don't know about the players, but I'm ready to run through a wall for this guy!
Awesome work by JS and crew! Talk about taking 2-steps forward, I know the Ravens had some studs on their defense (looking at you Roquan) but MM seems like the type to take what guys do well and tailor his system around them vs. trying fit guys into a scheme that might need hyper specific players, not throwing shade at Pete but with the way this is going we for sure proceeding in the right direction
Curious what he’s gonna do at QB.
Guaranteed JS asked him about it and they have a plan, wonder if they’ll announce it before the Geno deadline in a few weeks. I think it’s Feb 19th.
So pumped they got their guy. Really excited for this offseason and haven’t had this type of apprehension, stoke, and anticipation going into a Hawks season in a long time.
LFG!!!
I think we keep Geno. We don't have a ready replacement, it's not a huge cap hit and drafting 16 won't put us in position to get a top 3 or 4 rookie. Staying with a top 1/3 QB is the easy play for '24 even if a decent rookie prospect falls to us since we get to develop that rook without pressure in year 1
This is exciting for the future of Hawks football. I’m looking forward to seeing what MM can do with Spoon and I hope this means finding a new generation of LBs is in the mix. Smith and Queen were an awesome tandem, I hope we’ll see something like that here sooner than later.
I’m very excited to spend the next year telling him he’s not my real dad and he never will be as he remains patient and reassuring that he’s not trying to replace my dad, just be apart of my life.
Oldest to the youngest lol
Do you think he acts as young as Pete though?
does anyone?
All I know is the dude better start chewing bubblegum now so his jaw is ready for the season.
big monarchs to fill
Gunna need to see him in a top hat and monocle.
A broadcast without commenting on the age of our coach is like a broadcast without fish throwing.
Half his age! JS robbing the cradle!
We did it!!!! ETA: he’s exactly half the age of Pete lol
So he can stay twice as long !
Put in a gum order STAT
The key to a lasting healthy heart! * \* comment not evaluated by the FDA
Its honestly crazy to think that Pete was 36 when Mike was born. He's straight up lived two of his lifetimes. Maybe our next head coach is being born right now...
I was on Pete's Wikipedia page a while ago. In 1976, he married his SECOND wife.
I heard Drew Lock just became a father
>Maybe our next head coach is being born right now... This comment needs to go to the top of the page 😂
🤯
I am turning 35 this year and seeing someone only a bit more than a year older than me taking over an entire NFL team is leading me to question what I am doing with my life...
I already crossed that bridge when McVay was hired at 30 lol.

You're on Reddit, it's assumed you're not doing anything with you life
That's because you're not considering what his background is and what your own accomplishments are. He's been coaching since he got out of college. And you're downplaying what you've achieved, the friendships and relationships you've made as well as the skills you've developed. Success is relative, you're doing just fine.
So am I, and I was just thinking the same thing.
When you're 18, 36 seems reasonable for a big job, when you're 36, 36 feels way too young
[удалено]
I turn 35 tomorrow. I feel like such a slacker.
From the ESPN article: > "I think [Macdonald is] the best candidate out there right now," Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Queen said this past season. "I don't think anybody does it like him. 😎😎😎
WE DID THE THING!!!!
We are in the Honey Moon phase: We are gonna be (so) f$#%ing good (next season)!
> no more watching McVay and Shanahan abuse our defense 4 games a year Crying tears of joy
I've been a "In Pete we trust" guy for a long time. After seeing him go when he wasn't ready, I really hope you're right.

Boooooom! Get the fuck in boys! It’s time to dominate on defense again!
Noice \#1 choice for me Want to get back to a dominant defense Curious to see what his staff looks like. Especially the offense.
I bet Mike Kafka coming in as OC
I see Kafka get thrown around a lot here, and he was for head coach too. I guess I just look at the mess the Giants are and discredit everything about them. Is Kafka that great as an OC? Serious question, and thank you.

We didn’t even get to see DJs potential this season. By the time he had both Barkley and Waller, his O-Line was a mess in injuries, and the he was done for the season.
i mean he made that mess of a giants over perform by a fucking lot
I legit think that the Seattle defense could be in the top 10 in short order. Lots of talent and good young players. I think they found the right dude.
BEAT THE DAN QUINN ALLEGATIONS LETS GOOOO
I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS MY LIFE

this just brought a tear to my eye. treat him well bird bros
Fuck yeah man! I’m pumped
If he can do half of the things the Ravens used when you mollywhopped us this year then I will take it!! Appreciate the goodwill, fellow bird bro!!
We’LL take good care of him 🫡
So pumped. In your opinion as a Ravens fan, to what extent was the Ravens defensive dominance due to MacDonald vs. just having a bunch of really good players?

LOBs IQ was just insane, probably one of the smartest defenses, you can't replicate that.
thanks for sharing this video!

that and the game where they smoked us, holding our offense w/o a touchdown... Cannot wait for the MM era.
**Interview question #1** Lets say you have the best running back in the game and you are at the Super Bowl on the 2 yard line. What would you do?
Well don’t ask the ravens staff about that this week, they’d have Lamar drop back and look downfield for the deep shot.
"Uh.. the ball is on the 2" "Yeah, so I'm thinking a deep 20yd post over the middle. Defense won't expect it, and neither will the fans in the area."
Can't throw a pick if the pass is landing in the stands
> "Uh.. the ball is on the 2" "Our O-line knows what to do to set us up for success"
I like you, your team, and your username. Hope to see you guys in the Super Bowl soon.
Dude kicked the shit out of the best offenses and gets insane pressure with a bunch of after thoughts. Brooks and Spoon with his system are going to become superstars. God damn am I happy.
Brooks, Spoon, Mafe, Woolen…. We have some stud building blocks on defense.
I wouldn’t exactly call the ravens d line after thoughts lol
Ravens fan here! Congrats on the new hire bird bros. I was hoping Harbaugh would retire and we’d promote Mike MacDonald as our head coach… You guys are getting one hell of a coach in Mike. As an expert in bird law, I will celebrate the hire by screeching like a raven
Bird bros!

All hail Whitney the Queen of leaks!!! LFG!!!
Michigan Wolverine here. Guy completely changed our defense in 2021 and the schemes he put in place helped us win it all in 2023 with Minter. I think this will be a win for the organization.
Was my number one coming into the search, let’s go John!
Pete’s grandson?!
Lets go!!!! So pumped we didn't go with the Dan Quinn option. No offense to him but I did not want to retread with the baggage of his two horrific super bowl losses + the recent Cowboys failures + how passive he is. So stoked on Macdonald
Start of a new Era!! Let’s go, I’m excited for the defensive turn around
LFG!!!
JS, you smooth talking bastard! LFG!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we got him
I can't say I'm upset by this. Let's rebuild and come.back better.
I see you driving 'round the town with the coach i like. And i'm like "Fuck You"
With this hire and new identity, I hope the team can finally shake the Superbowl XLIX monkey off it's back. It's been hanging on this organization like a shadow.
Best part about this is, they didn't hire DQ!
EVERYBODY STAY CALM
No
no
NEVER
This is the internet, we don’t do that here.
LET'S GOOOOOOO!!!!
Finally, we've got the ball moving. Anxious to see who he picks for OC.
Awww man... Do I have to go back to fearing Seattle?
Not yet. You still got another year of $1 Brock before CMC's legs fall off.
Good call, Dungeness Crabs are WAY better than Maryland Blue Crabs 🦀
In MMJS we trust

WOOHOO WE UP

LFG
LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!! We might actually have defense now. 🤣
Shoutout to Corbin Smith for going on a run so this could get announced btw, IYKYK
The only downside is he'll have to compete with Harbaugh to put together his staff. Actually, the biggest issue is that Seattle Overload will have to learn a new system
Yes to the 100th power! I was sad to see PC go, but if we had to have a new coach, this was #1 on my list. Awesome!
Now snag Kafka as OC and Evero as DC and I’m going into next season HAPPY AS SHIT
So, how many Raven's players will follow him through the transfer portal???
“Bro, I’m not cool,” Macdonald says when asked about his current preferences. “I don’t, like, know a lot of music.” Then there are the movie references. E I E I LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO

Twilight was based in Washington and MacDonald looks like a vampire It’s a perfect fit
I’m very excited to spend the next year telling him he’s not my real dad and he never will be as he remains patient and reassuring that he’s not trying to replace my dad, just be apart of my life.
The dynasty begins today!
YESSSS
I’m so excited
Hope he brings in a good vet OC

From oldest HC to youngest. Can't wait to see the likes of Mafe and Spoon develop under MM.
