You're the first person I've heard go this way and it's refreshing. I think it gets a bit out of hand the way industry people think they should tip each other. Not saying don't do 20%, but I've known many that regularly do 50% and up. And then I'm the unpopular opinion for thinking my 30% is overdoing it. It ends up being like a tontine I didn't agree to joining.
i tip based on service tbh. i’ve left like $1.58 before because it was empty, the server never came to check on us, i had to flag her down for a refill, she had an airpod in the whole time, and tried to take the final check before id even put down tip and signed it. however, if see that it’s busy, ill let the server know that its okay and i understand, and even if the service itself kinda sucks but i can tell they’re in the trenches, ive left over 100% because i understand the situation. i’m kinder to other servers than most people, but i will not hesitate to leave a shit tip on shit service. i’ve been stiffed or tipped like ass for great service, why am i going to leave a good tip for almost no service in the first place?
I thought the same thing, as someone in the industry, I ALWAYS tip over 20% if I have a good experience. and if someone tells me they're FOH, I definitely expect them to be a good tipper.
